Mountain Dew sits at the top of the mainstream soda list, but even its 54 mg in a full 12-ounce can falls well short of the 96 mg in a smaller 8-ounce cup of coffee. Zero Sugar Mountain Dew pushes slightly higher at 68 mg per 12 ounces, making it one of the most caffeinated conventional sodas on the market. Still not coffee territory.

One detail that surprises people: Diet Coke has more caffeine than regular Coke. At 46 mg per can versus 34 mg, it’s roughly a third higher.

Why Soda Caffeine Is Capped

The FDA classifies caffeine as “generally recognized as safe” in cola-type beverages only up to 200 parts per million, which works out to about 71 mg per 12-ounce can. That regulatory ceiling is one reason no mainstream soda comes close to coffee. Coffee, by contrast, has no federal caffeine limit because caffeine occurs naturally in the beans rather than being added as an ingredient.

How Coffee Type Changes the Picture

The 96 mg figure for brewed coffee is an average, but real-world variation is enormous. An 8-ounce cup can range from 95 to 200 mg depending on the bean, grind size, and brew time. A 12-ounce cup, which is closer to what most people actually pour, can run anywhere from 113 to 247 mg.

Espresso is the most concentrated form. A single 2-ounce shot contains about 127 mg of caffeine, packing more than an entire 12-ounce can of Mountain Dew into two tablespoons of liquid. But because espresso servings are so small, you typically consume less total caffeine from a single shot than from a full mug of drip coffee.

Roast level makes less difference than most people assume. Light roasts and dark roasts end up very close in caffeine when measured by weight. One study found light roast brewed coffee had about 60 mg per serving compared to 51 mg for dark roast, but researchers noted the difference was small enough to vary between batches of the same beans.

Real-World Serving Sizes Matter

The ounce-for-ounce comparison tells part of the story, but what you actually drink tells the rest. Nobody orders an 8-ounce coffee at a café, and a typical soda bottle isn’t 8 ounces either.

A standard Starbucks Grande is 16 ounces, which puts its caffeine content roughly in the 190 to 250 mg range for drip coffee. A 20-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola contains about 57 mg. So in a common real-world scenario, that coffee shop order delivers four to five times the caffeine of a convenience store soda.

If you’re drinking multiple cans of soda throughout the day, though, the total adds up. Three 12-ounce cans of Mountain Dew give you about 162 mg, which starts to approach a single large coffee. People who sip soda all day sometimes don’t realize their cumulative intake is getting into meaningful caffeine range.

Does Soda Caffeine Hit You Differently?

A common belief is that the carbonation or temperature of a drink changes how fast your body absorbs caffeine. Research from Washington State University tested this directly, comparing hot versus cold beverages and fast versus slow drinking speeds. The result: caffeine absorption was nearly identical across all conditions. Whether you chug a cold soda or slowly sip a hot coffee, your body processes the caffeine at the same rate. The only thing that changes how much caffeine enters your system is the amount of caffeine in the drink itself.

So if coffee makes you feel more alert than soda, it’s simply because you’re consuming more caffeine per serving, not because your body handles it differently.
