Tachycardia is defined as a resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute (bpm) in adults. That threshold is consistent across every major medical authority, including the American Heart Association, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic. But crossing 100 bpm doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. Context matters: why your heart rate is elevated, how long it stays elevated, and whether you have symptoms all determine whether tachycardia is a normal response or a medical concern.
Why 100 BPM Is the Cutoff
A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 bpm. Anything above that upper boundary qualifies as tachycardia by definition. “Resting” is the key word here. Your heart rate naturally climbs during exercise, stress, or excitement, and that’s expected. The 100 bpm threshold only applies when your body is at rest, meaning you’re sitting or lying down and haven’t recently been physically active.
For clinical purposes, the American Heart Association notes that heart rates typically need to reach 150 bpm or higher before a rapid rhythm is treated as a true emergency requiring immediate intervention. A resting rate of 101 bpm is technically tachycardia, but it carries very different implications than a rate of 180 bpm.
Children Have Different Thresholds
The 100 bpm rule applies to adults and children over 10. Younger children have naturally faster hearts, so what counts as “too fast” depends on age. According to pediatric life support guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:
- Newborns to 3 months: Normal awake heart rate ranges from 85 to 205 bpm
- 3 months to 2 years: Normal awake range is 100 to 190 bpm
- 2 to 10 years: Normal awake range is 60 to 140 bpm
- Over 10 years: Normal awake range is 60 to 100 bpm, same as adults
A heart rate of 160 bpm in a 6-month-old is perfectly normal. The same rate in a teenager warrants attention.
Normal Fast Heart Rate vs. a Problem
The most common form of tachycardia is sinus tachycardia, where your heart’s natural pacemaker simply sends signals faster than usual. This happens in response to everyday triggers: exercise, anxiety, caffeine, dehydration, fever, or pain. Your heart speeds up because your body is asking it to. Once the trigger resolves, your heart rate returns to normal.
Sinus tachycardia is generally harmless and doesn’t require treatment on its own. The fix is addressing whatever caused it, whether that’s drinking water, resting, or treating a fever.
It becomes a concern when your resting heart rate stays above 100 bpm without an obvious reason. This is called inappropriate sinus tachycardia, a diagnosis of exclusion where a persistent resting rate over 100 bpm causes distressing symptoms like pounding heartbeat, fatigue, or dizziness, but no underlying cause can be found. The heart’s electrical system looks normal on testing, yet the rate stays elevated.
Types That Start From Abnormal Electrical Signals
Not all tachycardia comes from your heart’s natural pacemaker working overtime. Some types involve electrical signals firing from the wrong place in the heart, and these carry more risk.
Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) originates in the upper chambers of the heart. During an episode, heart rate can spike to 250 bpm or higher. SVT episodes often start and stop suddenly. Many people describe the sensation as a rapid fluttering in the chest that comes on without warning and may last minutes to hours.
Ventricular tachycardia (VT) starts in the lower chambers, which are responsible for pumping blood to the rest of your body. VT is more dangerous because it can interfere with the heart’s ability to pump effectively. In its most extreme form, ventricular fibrillation, the heart quivers chaotically instead of pumping. Blood pressure drops, breathing stops, and the person loses consciousness. Without treatment within minutes, it’s fatal.
Common Causes of a Persistently Fast Heart Rate
When tachycardia shows up at rest and sticks around, it’s often a sign that something else in the body needs attention. The heart is responding to a demand, not malfunctioning on its own. Some of the most common non-cardiac causes include:
- Anemia: When your blood carries less oxygen per unit, your heart compensates by beating faster
- Overactive thyroid: Excess thyroid hormone accelerates your metabolism, pushing heart rate up
- Dehydration: Less fluid volume in your blood vessels means your heart has to work harder to maintain blood pressure
- Fever or infection: Your heart rate typically rises about 10 bpm for every degree (Fahrenheit) of fever
- Medications and stimulants: Caffeine, certain cold medications, and some prescription drugs can elevate heart rate
In many of these cases, treating the underlying condition brings the heart rate back to normal without any heart-specific treatment.
How Tachycardia Is Diagnosed
A single heart rate reading above 100 bpm doesn’t necessarily lead to a diagnosis. If your resting heart rate is consistently elevated, the first test is usually an electrocardiogram (EKG), which records your heart’s electrical activity through sensors placed on your chest. An EKG can show whether the rhythm is regular or irregular and where the electrical signals are originating, which helps distinguish sinus tachycardia from SVT or VT.
The limitation of an EKG is that it captures only a few seconds of your heart’s activity. If your episodes come and go, a Holter monitor provides a fuller picture. This small wearable device records your heart rhythm continuously for a day or more while you go about normal activities. It can catch irregular heartbeats that a brief office EKG might miss entirely.
Symptoms That Need Immediate Attention
A fast heart rate by itself, especially one you notice after coffee or during a stressful moment, is not usually an emergency. The situation changes when a rapid heart rate comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint. These symptoms suggest your heart may not be pumping blood effectively at the elevated rate. If someone with a rapid heart rate collapses or loses consciousness, that’s a cardiac emergency requiring immediate help.
