What Helps Relieve Gas: Quick and Natural Remedies

Most gas relief comes down to helping trapped bubbles move through your digestive tract faster or preventing them from forming in the first place. The good news is that several approaches work well, from simple physical techniques you can try right now to over-the-counter options and dietary adjustments that reduce gas over time.

Quick Physical Relief

If you’re dealing with gas pain right now, start with heat. Placing a warm compress or heating pad on your abdomen stimulates movement in your intestines, increases blood flow, and relaxes the surrounding muscles. This combination helps trapped gas pass through more quickly while easing the cramping sensation. Heat also triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which creates an environment for better digestive movement overall.

Gentle movement helps too. Walking for 10 to 15 minutes encourages your intestines to contract and push gas along. Lying on your back and pulling your knees to your chest (sometimes called “wind-relieving pose”) applies gentle pressure to your abdomen that can help release trapped gas mechanically.

Abdominal massage is another effective hands-on technique. The approach follows the natural path of your large intestine using three strokes in sequence:

  • The “I” stroke: Using gentle pressure, move your hand straight down from just under your left rib cage to your left hip bone. Repeat 10 times.

Simethicone (sold as Gas-X and similar brands) is the most widely used gas relief medication. It works as a surfactant, meaning it lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles in your digestive tract. This causes small, painful bubbles to merge into larger ones that are much easier to pass as burping or flatulence. It’s not absorbed into your bloodstream, so it stays in the gut and does its work locally. The typical adult dose is 40 to 125 mg up to four times daily after meals and at bedtime, with a maximum of 500 mg per day.

If beans, lentils, broccoli, or other high-fiber vegetables are your main gas triggers, a digestive enzyme called alpha-galactosidase (sold as Beano) can help. These foods contain complex sugars your body can’t break down on its own, so bacteria in your colon ferment them and produce gas. The enzyme breaks down those sugars before they reach your colon. The key is timing: you need to take it with your first bite of the problem food, not after the gas has already started.

You may have seen activated charcoal marketed for gas and bloating. The evidence here is mixed at best. While activated charcoal has proven uses in hospital settings for poisoning, its ability to relieve everyday gas hasn’t been reliably demonstrated. The FDA doesn’t regulate activated charcoal supplements, so quality and effectiveness vary widely. Simethicone and peppermint oil are better-supported choices.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil relaxes the smooth muscle lining your intestines by blocking calcium channels in the muscle cells. When those muscles relax, trapped gas can move through more freely instead of building up and causing pain. Most of the clinical research uses enteric-coated capsules, which are designed to dissolve in your intestine rather than your stomach. This matters because peppermint oil released in the stomach can sometimes cause heartburn.

Dosages in clinical trials typically range from 180 to 225 mg taken two to three times daily. Most of this research was done in people with irritable bowel syndrome, but the muscle-relaxing mechanism applies to general gas discomfort as well. Peppermint tea is a milder option, though it delivers a lower and less consistent dose than capsules.

Ginger for Sluggish Digestion

Gas often builds up when food sits in your stomach too long. Ginger directly addresses this by speeding up gastric emptying. In a study of healthy volunteers, ginger cut the time it took for the stomach to empty by roughly half, from about 27 minutes down to 13 minutes, while also increasing the frequency of stomach contractions. Faster emptying means less time for gas to accumulate in the upper digestive tract.

Fresh ginger in hot water, ginger chews, or ginger capsules are all common ways to get the benefit. Having it shortly before or with a meal is the most practical timing.

Probiotics

Probiotics can help with gas, but the results depend heavily on which strains you take and whether you combine them. Research on Bifidobacterium infantis 35624, one of the most studied strains for digestive symptoms, found that taking it alone didn’t significantly improve gas symptoms. However, when it was part of a multi-strain probiotic blend, people experienced meaningful reductions in bloating and abdominal pain. This suggests that strain diversity matters more than any single “star” bacterium.

Probiotics aren’t a quick fix. They typically take a few weeks of consistent use before you notice a difference, and the benefits tend to fade if you stop taking them. They’re best suited for people who deal with gas regularly rather than someone looking for immediate relief from a single episode.

Dietary Changes That Reduce Gas

Certain foods are well-known gas producers: beans, lentils, onions, garlic, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, whole grains, and carbonated drinks. You don’t necessarily need to avoid all of them. Try removing the worst offenders for a week or two, then reintroduce them one at a time to identify your personal triggers.
