Shortness of breath often improves with simple techniques you can do right now, like changing your breathing pattern or shifting your body position. The right approach depends on what’s causing it, but several strategies work across a wide range of conditions, from anxiety to chronic lung disease. Here’s what actually helps.

Pursed Lip Breathing

This is the single most effective immediate technique for most people experiencing shortness of breath. It works by keeping your airways open longer, releasing trapped air from your lungs, and allowing fresh, oxygen-rich air to replace stale air. The method is straightforward: breathe in slowly through your nose for about two seconds, then purse your lips as if you’re about to whistle and exhale gently for four seconds or longer. You don’t need to take a deep breath. A normal-sized inhale is fine.

The key rule is that your exhale should always be longer than your inhale. This slows your breathing rate, reduces the effort your body needs to breathe, and helps move more carbon dioxide out of your lungs. Relax your neck and shoulders before you start, since tension in those muscles makes breathing harder. Many people feel relief within a few breath cycles.

Change Your Position

How you hold your body has a surprisingly large effect on how easily you can breathe. The tripod position, where you lean slightly forward while supporting yourself with your hands or arms, allows your chest cavity to expand more fully and recruits additional muscles to help with breathing. It also helps reduce excess fluid pooling in the heart and lungs.

You can do this several ways:

  • Sitting in a chair: lean forward and rest your hands or forearms on your knees.
  • Sitting in bed: place a table in front of you with pillows on it, lean forward, and rest your head on your arms or the pillows.

A Fan Aimed at Your Face

This one sounds too simple to work, but a handheld fan directed at your face can meaningfully reduce the sensation of breathlessness. A systematic review of ten trials found that 60% reported significant improvement in shortness of breath with fan therapy, and most studies used the fan for just five minutes. The cool airflow on your face appears to stimulate nerve receptors that signal your brain to reduce the feeling of air hunger. Calm Your Nervous System

Anxiety and shortness of breath feed each other in a vicious cycle. When you feel like you can’t get enough air, your stress response kicks in, which tightens your chest and makes breathing even harder. Breaking this loop requires activating your vagus nerve, the long nerve that runs from your brain to your abdomen and acts as your body’s built-in calming system.

Slow, deep belly breathing is one of the most reliable ways to do this. Breathe in through your nose for a count of six, then out through your mouth for a count of eight. Watch your belly expand on the inhale and contract on the exhale. During stress, most people unconsciously hold their breath or take shallow chest breaths, which deprives the vagus nerve of stimulation. Your Environment Matters

Dry air irritates airways and can worsen shortness of breath, especially in winter. Keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 40 percent helps prevent your nasal passages and airways from drying out. A simple hygrometer (available for a few dollars at most hardware stores) lets you monitor levels, and a humidifier can bring them into the right range.

Heart-related breathlessness often comes with swelling in the ankles or feet, chest pain or pressure, palpitations, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath that worsens when lying flat or wakes you from sleep. It can also show up as the sole symptom during a cardiac event, particularly in people who don’t experience typical chest pain.

Lung-related breathlessness more commonly involves wheezing, a persistent cough, increased mucus production, or a history of smoking or environmental exposures. Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention
