What Is a Banana Roll and How Do You Get Rid of It?

A banana roll is a crescent-shaped pocket of fat that sits just beneath the crease of your buttock, right where the butt meets the upper thigh. The name comes from its curved, banana-like shape that follows the natural fold under each cheek. Banana rolls can range from barely noticeable to quite prominent, and they’re one of the most common reasons people seek body contouring in the lower body.

Where Exactly Is It?

The banana roll lies on top of the upper thigh, running parallel to the crease (or fold) beneath your buttock. It’s not part of the buttock itself and not quite part of the thigh. This in-between location is what makes it so visually distinct: it can create a bulge or drooping effect that disrupts the smooth transition from butt to leg, especially visible from a side or back angle.

Why Banana Rolls Form

Genetics are the biggest factor. Where your body stores fat is largely inherited, and banana rolls tend to run in families. If your parents or siblings carry weight in the lower buttock area, you’re more likely to as well. This also means that even people at a healthy weight can have noticeable banana rolls simply because of how their body distributes fat.

Hormonal shifts also play a role. Changes during pregnancy and menopause can redirect fat storage toward the thighs and buttocks. As hormone levels fluctuate, your body’s calorie-burning patterns shift too, which can accelerate fat buildup in this area.

Age matters more than most people realize. After 30, total body fat tends to increase, sometimes by as much as one-third compared to younger years. Metabolism slows, activity levels often drop, and the combination makes fat deposits like banana rolls more likely to appear or become more pronounced over time.

A few other contributors worth knowing about:

Why Exercise Alone Often Isn’t Enough

Banana rolls are a stubborn fat deposit. You can strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, and thighs through targeted exercises like lunges, squats, and hip thrusts, and this can improve the overall contour of the area by tightening the surrounding muscles. But spot-reducing fat in one specific location isn’t how the body works. When you lose fat through diet and exercise, your body decides where it comes off first, and for many people, the banana roll is one of the last places to shrink. That genetic programming that put the fat there in the first place also makes it resistant to general weight loss.

This doesn’t mean exercise is pointless. Building muscle in the glutes and hamstrings can make the banana roll less visually prominent by improving the shape and firmness of the surrounding area. Cosmetic Treatment Options

Non-surgical options also exist. Fat-freezing treatments (cryolipolysis) can reduce small banana rolls by destroying fat cells through controlled cooling. Injectable treatments that dissolve fat are another option for smaller deposits. These approaches involve less downtime but produce more modest results and typically require multiple sessions.

Some patients combine banana roll liposuction with fat transfer to the buttocks. Fat removed from beneath the crease is processed and re-injected into the buttock itself, simultaneously reducing the roll and adding volume above it. This creates a more dramatic lift effect.

Recovery and What to Expect

After liposuction of the banana roll area, you’ll wear a compression garment to support the tissues and control swelling. The first week or two involves the most discomfort, and sitting can be awkward since the treated area is exactly where your body meets a chair. Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks, though exercise is typically restricted for several weeks longer.

Swelling distorts the results initially, so what you see right after the procedure isn’t the final outcome. The true contour emerges gradually.
