A body sock is a stretchy, full-body sack made of lycra or similar fabric that a person climbs inside, creating gentle resistance and compression against the skin and joints with every movement. Originally developed as a sensory tool in occupational therapy, body socks are now widely used by children and adults who benefit from deep pressure input, particularly those with autism, sensory processing disorder, or ADHD.

How a Body Sock Works

The fabric stretches in all directions but pushes back slightly against the body, so every reach, twist, or step meets resistance. This resistance sends feedback through the joints, a type of sensory input called proprioception, which is the body’s internal sense of where its limbs are in space. At the same time, the compression against the skin mimics the feeling of a firm hug or a weighted blanket, activating the same calming response in the nervous system.

Moving inside a body sock also challenges balance and spatial awareness. Because the fabric limits visual input and changes how movement feels, the brain works harder to coordinate the body, which provides vestibular input. For children who are under-responsive to movement or have trouble sensing where their body is relative to objects around them, this combination of resistance and balance work can be intensely organizing for the nervous system.

Who Uses Body Socks

Body socks were designed primarily for children with sensory processing challenges, but they’re useful across a range of needs. Children with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorder often seek out or avoid certain types of sensory input in ways that interfere with daily life. A body sock gives them a controlled, predictable way to get deep pressure and movement input without overstimulation. Many neurotypical children also enjoy them simply because the compression feels good.

Adults use them too, particularly those on the autism spectrum or anyone who finds deep pressure calming. Some occupational therapists recommend them for anxious children before transitions (like moving from playtime to homework) or during moments of sensory overload.

Benefits for Focus and Emotional Regulation

The deep pressure from a body sock calms the nervous system in a way similar to a weighted blanket. This compression can reduce anxiety by making the wearer feel secure and less reactive to noise, light, or other environmental triggers. Children who are prone to meltdowns or shutdowns from sensory overload often become noticeably calmer after spending time in one.

There’s a downstream effect on attention and focus. Once the body feels regulated, the brain is freer to engage with tasks. Many children are better able to sit through homework, follow instructions, or participate in group activities after a session in a body sock. For kids with attention challenges, the increased body awareness and reduced background anxiety can make a real difference in their ability to concentrate.

Pulling the fabric tightly around the body, to whatever level feels comfortable, amplifies the hugging sensation. Some children use them as a retreat space when emotions run high, wrapping themselves up until they feel ready to re-engage.

What They Look Like

A typical body sock is a pillowcase-shaped sack with an opening at the top (or sometimes at the side with a closure). The person steps or climbs inside, and the fabric covers the entire body from feet to shoulders, sometimes up over the head depending on the design. Most versions leave the face exposed or have an opening the wearer can see through. The fabric is breathable and lightweight, so overheating is rarely an issue during short sessions.

Children use them in a variety of ways: standing and stretching into yoga-like poses, rolling on the floor, crawling, or simply sitting still and enjoying the compression. Some therapists incorporate them into obstacle courses or movement activities to layer proprioceptive input with physical play.

Choosing the Right Size

Sizing matters because the sock needs to be snug enough to provide meaningful resistance but not so tight that it restricts movement or feels uncomfortable. Most manufacturers size by the user’s height rather than weight. A common sizing scale looks like this:

  • Small: for individuals up to about 110 cm (roughly 3’7″)
  • Medium: up to 130 cm (about 4’3″)

Safety and Supervision

Body socks should always be used with adult supervision, especially for younger children or those who cannot easily remove the sock on their own. The fabric can restrict vision and alter balance, so clear floor space free of sharp corners or hard objects is important. Most occupational therapists recommend sessions of 10 to 20 minutes rather than extended wear, since the sensory input is intense and the calming effects typically carry over well beyond the time spent inside the sock.

Look for socks made from durable, machine-washable fabric with reinforced seams. The stretch will loosen slightly over time, which is normal, but a well-made body sock should hold its resistance through months of regular use.
