A callus is a thick, hardened patch of skin that forms on your foot in response to repeated pressure or friction. It’s your skin’s way of protecting itself: when the same spot gets rubbed or pressed over and over, the outermost layer of skin ramps up production of tough protein cells, building up a dense shield. Calluses most commonly appear on the bottom of your feet, especially on the heels, the balls of your feet, your big toes, and along the sides.

How a Callus Forms

Your skin’s outer layer is designed to shed and replace itself constantly. But when one area takes repeated mechanical stress, the skin cells in that zone go into overdrive, stacking up faster than they can shed. This process, called hyperkeratosis, creates multiple compressed layers of dead skin that feel thick, dry, and often yellowish. Unlike a blister, which is your skin’s emergency response to sudden friction, a callus builds slowly over weeks or months of steady pressure.

The result is a broad, irregularly shaped patch that’s firm to the touch but generally flat. Most calluses aren’t painful on their own, though large or very thick ones can create a dull ache or tenderness when you stand or walk, especially on hard surfaces.

Calluses vs. Corns

People often use “corn” and “callus” interchangeably, but they’re different. Calluses are larger, flatter, and spread out across weight-bearing areas on the bottom of your foot. Corns are small and round, and they typically show up on the tops or sides of your toes where shoes press against the skin. Corns also have a hard, cone-shaped core at their center that can dig into deeper tissue and cause sharp pain. Calluses lack that central core, which is why they tend to feel more like general pressure than a focused point of pain.

What Causes Foot Calluses

The underlying cause is always the same: chronic friction or pressure against the skin. But several everyday factors determine where and how quickly calluses develop.

  • Poorly fitting shoes are the most common culprit. Shoes that are too tight squeeze the foot against rigid surfaces. Shoes that are too loose let the foot slide around, creating friction with every step. High heels shift your body weight forward onto the ball of the foot, concentrating pressure in one area.
  • Going without socks removes the buffer layer between your skin and the shoe interior, increasing direct friction.
  • Foot structure and gait play a role too. Flat feet, high arches, bunions, or hammertoes all change how weight distributes across the sole, making certain spots absorb more force than others.
  • High-impact activities like running or standing for long hours at work accelerate callus buildup simply by increasing the total pressure your feet absorb each day.

Treating Calluses at Home

Most calluses don’t need professional treatment. The simplest approach is a pumice stone. Soak your foot in warm, soapy water for about five minutes until the skin softens, then rub the wet pumice stone over the callus with light to medium pressure for two to three minutes. This removes the top layers of dead skin gradually. Rinse the stone after each use, and repeat daily until the callus thins down. The key is patience: pressing too hard or scraping too deep can cause bleeding and open the door to infection.

Over-the-counter callus removers use salicylic acid to chemically dissolve thickened skin. These come as adhesive pads (containing 12 to 40 percent salicylic acid) or liquid solutions (12 to 17.6 percent). You apply them directly to the callus, and the acid softens the dead skin so it peels away over several days. These products work, but they don’t distinguish between callused skin and healthy skin, so precise application matters. If the acid touches surrounding tissue, it can cause irritation or chemical burns.

Moisturizing creams with urea or ammonium lactate also help by softening the thickened skin between pumice sessions, making it easier to file down over time.

When Professional Treatment Helps

If a callus is thick enough to cause significant pain, or if you notice signs of infection like redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge, a podiatrist can remove it safely. The procedure is straightforward: they clean and disinfect the area, then use a surgical blade to carefully shave away the thickened skin layer by layer. It’s typically painless because the tissue being removed is dead. For calluses that keep returning, a podiatrist may also recommend custom orthotics or padding to redistribute pressure and address the root mechanical cause.

Preventing Calluses From Coming Back

Since calluses are a response to pressure, prevention is really about reducing the forces on your skin. Footwear choices make the biggest difference. Look for shoes with a wide toe box so your toes aren’t crammed together, cushioned insoles that absorb impact on the heel and ball of the foot, smooth interior linings without raised seams, and materials with some flexibility rather than stiff, rigid construction. Breathability matters too, because sweat softens the skin and makes it more vulnerable to friction damage.

Wearing well-fitted cushioned socks adds a protective layer, particularly socks with reinforcement at the heel, which is a common callus spot. Make sure they fit snugly enough that they don’t bunch or slide, since wrinkled fabric creates its own friction points.

If you have flat feet, high arches, or other structural issues, over-the-counter arch supports or custom orthotics can correct weight distribution enough to stop calluses from recurring in the same spots.

Calluses and Diabetes

If you have diabetes, calluses deserve extra attention. Diabetes can reduce blood flow to the feet and damage the nerves that let you feel pain, which means a callus can crack, deepen, or become infected without you noticing. A callus that develops a deep fissure or hole can become an entry point for bacteria, potentially leading to a foot ulcer. The CDC recommends that people with diabetes check their feet daily for calluses, sores, blisters, and any skin changes.

Self-treatment with pumice stones, razors, or salicylic acid products carries real risk if you have diabetes, peripheral artery disease, or any condition that causes numbness or poor circulation in your feet. The safest approach is to have a podiatrist handle callus removal and to focus on prevention through properly fitted footwear and regular foot exams.
