A CDT cartridge is a cannabis vape cartridge that uses cannabis-derived terpenes (CDTs) for its flavor and aroma, rather than terpenes sourced from other plants like lavender or citrus fruits. The distinction matters because cannabis-derived terpenes carry the full aromatic fingerprint of a specific cannabis strain, including minor compounds that can’t be replicated from non-cannabis sources. CDT cartridges are generally considered the premium option in the vape market, and they come with a higher price tag to match.
What Cannabis-Derived Terpenes Actually Are
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in all plants, not just cannabis. They’re what makes a lemon smell like a lemon or pine needles smell sharp and fresh. Cannabis plants produce their own rich blend of terpenes, and these are responsible for the wide range of aromas across different strains, from skunky and diesel to fruity and sweet.
When a cartridge label says “CDT,” it means the terpenes inside were extracted directly from cannabis flower. The most common extraction methods are steam distillation (a traditional technique that uses heat and water vapor to pull out essential oils) and supercritical CO2 extraction, which uses pressurized carbon dioxide as a solvent. Both methods aim to capture the plant’s original terpene profile, though the freshness and handling of the plant material significantly affect the final result. Drying and storing cannabis before extraction leads to a measurable drop in terpene content, which is why some producers work with fresh or flash-frozen flower.
CDT vs. BDT: Why the Source Matters
The alternative to CDTs is BDTs, or botanically derived terpenes. These are terpenes isolated from non-cannabis plants and blended together to approximate the flavor of a particular cannabis strain. A manufacturer might combine limonene from oranges, myrcene from hops, and pinene from pine trees to mimic, say, an OG Kush profile.
The problem is that cannabis produces more than just terpenes. Its essential oil contains a mix of aldehydes, esters, ketones, and other organic compounds that contribute to each strain’s signature smell and taste. These secondary compounds don’t exist in the same combination in any other plant. BDT blends can get the broad strokes right, hitting the citrus or earthy notes, but they can’t replicate the full chemical complexity of the original strain. It’s the difference between artificial grape flavoring and an actual grape.
CDT cartridges preserve that complexity. Because the terpenes are pulled from the cannabis plant itself, the minor compounds come along for the ride. This is why CDT carts tend to taste more “authentic” or strain-specific to most users, while BDT carts can taste slightly synthetic or one-dimensional by comparison.
Common Types of CDT Cartridges
Not all CDT cartridges are made the same way. The two most common formats differ in how the terpenes end up in the cart.
Live resin cartridges are made from fresh cannabis that’s flash-frozen immediately after harvest. This preserves the terpene and cannabinoid profile in its most natural state, since terpenes start degrading the moment a plant is cut, dried, and cured. Live resin is a full-spectrum extract, meaning it retains a broad range of cannabinoids and terpenes together from the start. These cartridges taste closest to the actual plant and are widely considered the gold standard for flavor.
Distillate with CDTs takes a different approach. Cannabis distillate is a highly refined extract, sometimes over 90% pure THC or CBD. The refining process strips out nearly everything else, including terpenes. To restore flavor, manufacturers reintroduce cannabis-derived terpenes into the distillate. The result is a potent cartridge with strain-specific flavor, but the experience can differ from live resin because the original ratio of cannabinoids and terpenes has been deconstructed and reassembled rather than preserved intact. Without those reintroduced terpenes, distillate is essentially flavorless.
The Entourage Effect: What’s Proven and What’s Not
You’ll often see CDT cartridges marketed around the “entourage effect,” the idea that cannabinoids, terpenes, and other cannabis compounds work together synergistically, producing effects greater than any single compound alone. This concept is real in principle but far less settled in science than marketing would suggest.
Some research has found that specific terpenes do interact with the body’s cannabinoid system. A 2023 study showed that the terpenes terpinolene and beta-caryophyllene produced anxiety-reducing effects in animal models through the CB2 receptor, the same receptor system that cannabinoids act on. This provides direct evidence that at least some terpenes cooperate with the cannabinoid system to influence behavior.
On the other hand, lab studies have found that the five most common cannabis terpenes, including myrcene, limonene, and pinene, did not directly interact with THC at the receptor level and didn’t enhance THC’s activity when combined with it. One study found that combining myrcene with CBD showed no significant difference in effect compared to myrcene alone. Another found that a whole-plant cannabis extract had stronger antitumor activity than pure THC, but the difference couldn’t be attributed to any of the five major terpenes.
The honest takeaway: terpenes almost certainly contribute to the overall cannabis experience, potentially through indirect pathways like improving how cannabinoids are absorbed or metabolized. But the specific claim that CDT terpenes dramatically change your high compared to BDT terpenes remains unproven. What is clearly different is the taste.
Flavor Profiles in CDT Cartridges
Cannabis terpenes fall into two main chemical families that shape what you taste and smell. Monoterpenes are lighter, more volatile compounds responsible for bright, sharp aromas. Myrcene, the most abundant terpene in most cannabis strains, delivers a musky, hop-like scent. Limonene brings citrus and lemon notes. Pinene adds a pine-forest sharpness.
Sesquiterpenes are heavier molecules that contribute deeper, more complex aromas. Beta-caryophyllene, the most common sesquiterpene in cannabis, produces a peppery, spicy character. Its oxidized form, caryophyllene oxide, adds a lemon-balm quality. Research on how people perceive cannabis aromas has identified two broad clusters: one group described as uniformly earthy, woody, and herbal, and another characterized as citrus, sweet, and pungent. A given CDT cartridge’s flavor depends on which strain the terpenes were extracted from and how well the extraction preserved its profile.
What to Look For When Buying
Terpene concentration in cartridges matters. Too little and you lose flavor. Too much and the vapor becomes harsh and irritating to your lungs. Most quality cartridges keep terpene content somewhere between 5% and 15% of the total oil, though this isn’t formally regulated in most markets. Lab studies on lung cells have shown that higher concentrations of terpenes like limonene are more toxic to airway tissue, and that terpenes can interact with other cartridge ingredients like diluents in ways that increase irritation beyond what either substance would cause alone.
When shopping for a CDT cartridge, check whether the product specifies “cannabis-derived terpenes” on the label or lab results. Some brands use vague language like “natural terpenes,” which could mean BDTs. A reputable product will also list the source strain. Live resin carts will typically say so prominently, since that’s a selling point. If a cartridge says “distillate” without mentioning how terpenes were reintroduced, it may contain BDTs or synthetic flavoring. Price is also a reliable signal: CDT cartridges cost more because extracting terpenes from cannabis is more expensive and lower-yield than sourcing them from abundant crops like oranges or lavender.
