How Well They Absorb
Cellulose sponges are remarkably absorbent. Research on cellulose sponge materials shows absorption capacities ranging from about 200% to 700% of the sponge’s own dry weight, depending on the liquid and the specific sponge structure. In practical terms, a standard kitchen cellulose sponge can soak up a small puddle of spilled juice or water in a single pass and wring out cleanly. They also dry faster than synthetic sponges, which matters for hygiene (more on that below).
Biodegradability and Environmental Impact
One of the biggest selling points of cellulose sponges is that they’re fully biodegradable. In composting or soil conditions, cellulose breaks down between 78% and 100% within one to two months. Over time, it always reaches complete decomposition. That’s a sharp contrast to plastic-based sponges, which can persist in landfills for decades and shed microplastics into waterways during use.
Because cellulose is a natural plant fiber, it doesn’t release microplastic particles when you scrub with it or rinse it under the tap. For people trying to reduce plastic waste in their kitchen, switching from a synthetic sponge to a cellulose one is a straightforward change with real impact, especially considering how often sponges get replaced.
How Long They Last
A cellulose sponge typically lasts two to four weeks with regular kitchen use. They break down faster than synthetic sponges because the natural fibers gradually wear and tear with daily scrubbing. You’ll notice the sponge starting to crumble, thin out, or develop a persistent smell as it reaches the end of its life. Bacteria and Kitchen Sponges

Two household methods are highly effective at sanitizing cellulose sponges between replacements. Microwaving a wet sponge for two minutes kills more than 99% of bacteria. A shorter one-minute cycle still eliminates 99.9999% of common kitchen sponge bacteria, according to USDA-funded research. The sponge must be thoroughly wet before microwaving, and it should contain no metallic fibers or attachments.
Running the sponge through a full dishwasher cycle that includes a heated drying phase is nearly as effective, killing 99.9998% of bacteria. Either method works well if you do it every day or two. Between sanitizing sessions, wringing the sponge out completely and letting it air-dry in a spot with good airflow will slow bacterial growth significantly, since bacteria need moisture to multiply.

Cellulose sponges show up far beyond household cleaning. Because cellulose is biocompatible, meaning the body tolerates it well without harmful reactions, it has a growing role in medicine.
