A centerfire rifle is any rifle that fires a cartridge with its primer located in the center of the cartridge base. When you pull the trigger, the firing pin strikes that center primer, igniting the powder inside the case and sending the bullet down the barrel. This is the most common ignition system used in modern rifles, from lightweight deer guns to long-range target rifles and military weapons.
How a Centerfire Cartridge Works
Every centerfire cartridge has four components: the bullet (the projectile), the case (typically brass, which holds everything together), the powder (a chemical mixture that rapidly converts to expanding gas when ignited), and the primer. The primer is a small, cup-shaped metal piece pressed into a pocket at the center of the cartridge base. It contains an impact-sensitive explosive compound.
When the firing pin hits that primer, it crushes the compound against a tiny internal anvil, creating a small flame. That flame passes through a flash hole into the main powder charge, which ignites and produces a rapid expansion of gas. That gas pressure pushes the bullet out of the case and through the barrel. The whole sequence, from trigger pull to bullet leaving the muzzle, happens in milliseconds.
Centerfire vs. Rimfire
The other major cartridge type is rimfire, and the difference comes down to where the priming compound sits. In a rimfire cartridge like the common .22 LR, the priming compound is spun into the hollow rim around the base of the case. The firing pin strikes the outer edge of that rim to ignite it. In a centerfire cartridge, a separate primer is inserted into a pocket in the center of the base, and the firing pin strikes dead center.
This distinction has real consequences. Because a rimfire case needs to be thin enough for the firing pin to crush the rim and ignite the compound, the brass must be quite thin. That limits how much pressure the cartridge can safely contain. A .22 LR tops out around 24,000 PSI. Centerfire rifle cartridges, by contrast, can have thick, heavily supported case walls and bases. A .308 Winchester operates at around 62,000 PSI, and some modern cartridges push even higher. That higher pressure translates directly into more velocity, more energy, and longer effective range.
Centerfire ignition is also considered more reliable. The primer is a precision-manufactured, self-contained component seated into a consistent pocket, so ignition is highly uniform from round to round. Rimfire priming compound can occasionally distribute unevenly inside the rim during manufacturing, which is why rimfire ammunition has a slightly higher rate of misfires. For hunting, self-defense, and military use, the reliability of centerfire ignition matters.
Reloadability
One of the biggest practical advantages of centerfire cartridges is that the brass cases can be reloaded. After firing, you can push out the spent primer, resize the case, seat a new primer, add a fresh powder charge, and press in a new bullet. A single brass case can be reloaded multiple times before it wears out. Rimfire cases cannot be reloaded because the priming compound is built into the case itself, and the rim is permanently deformed when fired.
Most centerfire ammunition sold in the United States uses the Boxer primer system, which has a single flash hole in the center of the primer pocket and an anvil built into the primer itself. This design makes reloading straightforward because you can easily punch out the spent primer from inside the case. European and Russian ammunition often uses the Berdan system, which has two offset flash holes and an anvil built into the case. Berdan-primed brass is significantly harder to reload, so if you plan to save your brass, Boxer-primed ammunition is the better choice.
Common Centerfire Rifle Calibers
Centerfire rifles span an enormous range of calibers, from small varmint rounds to cartridges designed for the largest and most dangerous animals on earth. A few have stood the test of time and remain widely used.
- .30-06 Springfield: Originally developed for the U.S. military, the .30-06 became one of the most versatile hunting cartridges ever produced. It carries enough energy for ethical kills on deer-sized game out to roughly 860 yards and on elk-sized game to about 580 yards, though most hunters take shots well inside those distances.
- .308 Winchester: A shorter, slightly less powerful cousin of the .30-06 that is extremely popular for both hunting and target shooting. Its effective range on deer-sized game extends to around 780 yards.
- .270 Winchester: A flat-shooting cartridge that excels on deer and similar game, with bullets available from light 90-grain varmint loads up to heavier options for larger animals. It maintains hunting velocity out past 600 yards.
- .30-30 Winchester: The classic lever-action cartridge, launching a 170-grain bullet at over 2,200 feet per second. It has accounted for a staggering amount of game since its introduction in 1895 and remains ideal for woods hunting where shots are under 100 yards.
- 6.5 Creedmoor: A newer cartridge that has become enormously popular for long-range target shooting and hunting, known for mild recoil and excellent accuracy at distance.
Effective Range and Energy
Centerfire rifles dramatically outperform rimfire rifles in range and terminal energy. A .22 LR rimfire is effective on small game at modest distances, typically inside 100 yards. Centerfire rifle cartridges operate in a different category entirely.
Two numbers help define a centerfire rifle’s effective range. The first is the distance at which a bullet slows below about 1,900 feet per second, the threshold where most hunting bullets stop expanding reliably on impact. The second is the distance at which the bullet carries less than 1,000 foot-pounds of energy, widely considered the minimum for a clean kill on a deer-sized animal. For a .30-06, that 1,000 foot-pound threshold sits at roughly 866 yards. For a .308 Winchester, it’s around 784 yards. For elk-sized game, the standard jumps to 1,500 foot-pounds, and effective distances shrink accordingly.
In practice, most hunters take shots at a fraction of these maximum distances. But the energy reserves of centerfire cartridges mean the bullet arrives with enough force to perform as designed, expanding properly and transferring energy efficiently, even at several hundred yards.
What Centerfire Rifles Are Used For
Nearly every rifle application beyond casual plinking and small-game hunting uses centerfire ammunition. Deer, elk, moose, and bear hunters all rely on centerfire rifles. Long-range target shooters and competitive precision rifle competitors use them. Law enforcement and military forces worldwide use centerfire rifles as their standard platforms. Home defense rifles like the AR-15 platform fire centerfire cartridges, most commonly the .223 Remington.
The sheer variety of available calibers means you can match a centerfire rifle to almost any task. A .223 produces relatively mild recoil and works for varmints and predators. A .30-06 or .300 Winchester Magnum handles large North American game. A .375 H&H Magnum meets the legal minimum for dangerous African game like Cape buffalo and elephant while still being manageable enough for most shooters to fire accurately.
