What Is a Certified Medical Assistant and What Do They Do?

A certified medical assistant (CMA) is a healthcare professional who has passed a national certification exam proving competency in both clinical and administrative medical office tasks. The credential most commonly associated with the title is the CMA (AAMA), awarded by the American Association of Medical Assistants, and it is widely considered the gold standard in the field. With a median salary of $44,200 and projected job growth of 12 percent over the next decade, it’s one of the faster-growing entry points into healthcare.

What a CMA Actually Does

Medical assistants work in physician offices, outpatient clinics, urgent care centers, and hospitals. Their role spans two broad categories: clinical tasks and administrative tasks. On the clinical side, a CMA takes vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen levels, height and weight), collects blood and urine samples, administers injections, performs EKGs, assists with minor surgical procedures, and processes lab specimens. They also prepare patients for exams, manage wound care, and provide instructions on things like diabetic care or home monitoring equipment.

On the administrative side, they schedule appointments, manage patient records, handle insurance paperwork, and ensure documentation meets privacy requirements. Most CMAs do some combination of both every day, though the exact balance depends on the size and type of practice. A small family medicine office might expect you to check patients in at the front desk and draw blood in the same shift. A large specialty clinic might assign you exclusively to clinical duties.

How Certification Works

To earn the CMA (AAMA) credential, you need to graduate from a medical assisting program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). These programs are offered at community colleges, vocational schools, and some universities, and they typically take one to two years to complete. Students who have finished all classroom coursework can register for the exam even before completing their practicum.

The certification exam itself is 200 questions covering three domains: clinical competency, general knowledge, and administrative skills. Clinical questions test your understanding of anatomy, pharmacology, infection control, specimen collection, and patient procedures. The general section covers healthcare law, ethics, HIPAA, patient consent, and mandatory reporting. The administrative section addresses scheduling, records management, and insurance processing. You get three lifetime attempts to pass.

Exam fees range from about $125 for AAMA members to $250 for non-members. Once you pass, the credential is valid for five years, at which point you’ll need to recertify.

Keeping Your Certification Active

CMAs must recertify every 60 months. You can do this by retaking the exam or by earning 60 continuing education units (CEUs). If you go the CEU route, at least 30 of those units must come from AAMA-approved courses, split evenly: 10 in administrative topics, 10 in clinical topics, and 10 in general knowledge. The remaining 30 can come from non-AAMA sources, giving you flexibility to pursue training that fits your specialty or career goals.

CMA vs. Other Medical Assistant Credentials

The CMA (AAMA) isn’t the only medical assistant certification available. Two other widely recognized options are the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists and the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association. All three credentials qualify you for similar work, but they differ in how you get there and how you maintain them.

The RMA is the most flexible in terms of eligibility. You can qualify by completing an accredited program, through military medical training, or with three years of documented work experience. It costs around $120, requires 30 CEUs every three years, and allows four lifetime exam attempts. It carries the same scope of practice as the CMA.

The CCMA is built more for people focused on hands-on patient care rather than front-office work. It emphasizes clinical skills like phlebotomy, EKGs, and injections. You can qualify with either a training program or one year of work experience plus a high school diploma. The exam is 180 questions, costs about $160, and requires renewal every two years with just 10 CEUs. The trade-off is that the renewal fee runs around $179 each cycle, which adds up faster than the other credentials.

If you’re not sure which to pursue, consider what employers in your area prefer. Many job postings specify CMA (AAMA), making it the safest default choice. But if you lack a formal education in medical assisting and have been working in healthcare, the RMA’s experience-based pathway could be a faster route to a credential.

Education and Time Investment

Most accredited medical assisting programs take 9 to 12 months for a certificate or diploma, and about two years for an associate degree. Both paths make you eligible for the CMA exam. The core curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, clinical procedures, and medical office management. Programs also include a supervised practicum or externship, where you work in a real clinical setting before graduating.

The program must be accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES at some point during your enrollment. If the program earns accreditation within 36 months after you graduate, you’re still eligible to sit for the exam. This matters because newer programs sometimes achieve accreditation after their first classes have already completed the coursework.

Salary and Job Growth

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $44,200 for medical assistants as of May 2024. Pay varies significantly by setting and location. CMAs working in hospitals or specialty practices generally earn more than those in small primary care offices. Geographic cost of living plays a major role too.

Employment in the field is expected to grow 12 percent from 2024 to 2034, which is substantially faster than the average for all occupations. The growth is driven by an aging population needing more preventive care, expanding outpatient clinics, and physician practices relying more heavily on support staff to handle routine clinical tasks. Holding a certification, rather than working as an uncertified medical assistant, consistently gives you an edge in both hiring and pay negotiations.
