What Is a Cichlid Fish? Facts About This Diverse Family

Cichlids are a massive family of freshwater fish (Cichlidae) with roughly 1,750 described species and hundreds more awaiting formal names. That makes them one of the most species-rich vertebrate families on the planet. They’re found across the tropics, from the Great Lakes of Africa to the rivers of Central and South America, and they’ve become one of the most popular groups of fish in the aquarium hobby. What sets cichlids apart is a combination of unusual anatomy, sophisticated parental care, and an almost unmatched ability to evolve into new forms.

What Makes Cichlids Different From Other Fish

Cichlids share a set of physical traits that distinguish them from other freshwater fish, but the most important one is a second set of jaws in the throat, called pharyngeal jaws. Most fish have some version of these structures, but in cichlids they’re uniquely powerful and flexible. The lower pharyngeal jaw bones are fused into a single triangular plate (in African species) or partially fused (in South American species), and a specialized muscle connects them to the skull, letting the fish crush, shear, and process food with surprising force.

This throat-jaw system essentially freed up the outer mouth to specialize entirely in collecting food. One species can have thin, scraping teeth on its lips for pulling algae off rocks, while a closely related species has a wide gape for swallowing smaller fish whole. Both process what they eat with the pharyngeal jaws in the back. This division of labor between two jaw systems is a major reason cichlids have been able to diversify into so many ecological roles.

Where Cichlids Live in the Wild

The greatest concentration of cichlid species is in Africa, particularly in the three Great Rift Lakes: Victoria, Malawi, and Tanganyika. These lakes alone are home to well over a thousand species. Cichlids have also radiated into species flocks in more than 30 other African lakes. Outside Africa, Central and South America host a rich diversity of cichlids in river systems, from large predatory species in the Amazon basin to smaller territorial fish in Mexican and Nicaraguan drainages. A handful of species also occur naturally in southern India, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar, reflecting an ancient distribution that predates the breakup of the continents.

Some cichlids are surprisingly tolerant of different water conditions. The Mayan cichlid, for example, moves freely between freshwater, brackish estuaries, and even full saltwater in its native range along the Atlantic coast of Mexico and Central America. Most species, though, are tied to specific freshwater habitats.

The Fastest Species Explosion in Vertebrates

Cichlids are one of the most studied examples of adaptive radiation in all of biology. Between 1,000 and 2,000 speciation events occurred in African cichlids over the past five million years alone. The ages of these radiations range from over 10 million years in Lake Tanganyika to as young as roughly 10,000 years in Lake Victoria, where hundreds of visually distinct species evolved in a geological eyeblink.

The pattern across these lakes is consistent: speciation happens rapidly in the early stages of a radiation as fish fill open ecological niches, then slows considerably once those niches are occupied, typically after about half a million years. The fact that cichlids have undergone this process independently in dozens of separate lakes, yet failed to radiate in many others, makes them a uniquely powerful system for understanding how new species form.

How Cichlids Feed

The range of feeding strategies across cichlid species is staggering. In Lake Tanganyika alone, researchers have documented cichlids that graze algae off rocks, filter invertebrates from sand, crack open snail shells, eat the scales of other fish, and prey on other cichlids. Some species even raid the mouths of brooding females to steal eggs and larvae.

These diets are closely tied to habitat. The algae grazer Tropheus moorii lives exclusively in shallow rocky zones down to about 20 meters, fiercely defending a feeding territory against other herbivores. Its pharyngeal jaw has fine, papilla-like teeth suited for grinding plant material. Meanwhile, Xenotilapia boulengeri roams sandy bottoms in large groups, sifting invertebrates from sediment using a molar-shaped pharyngeal jaw built for crushing small prey. The tight match between jaw shape, habitat, and diet across hundreds of species is what makes cichlids such a textbook example of evolution in action.

Parental Care and Reproduction

Cichlids are unusually devoted parents by fish standards, and their reproductive strategies fall into two broad categories: substrate brooding and mouthbrooding.

  • Substrate brooders lay eggs on a surface (rocks, leaves, or inside shells) and guard them as a pair. After hatching, the parents continue protecting the fry and actively help them feed. Some Central American substrate brooders beat their pectoral fins against the lake bottom to stir up food from the sediment. Others, like discus fish, produce a nutrient-rich mucus on their skin that newly hatched fry feed on directly.
  • Mouthbrooders pick up fertilized eggs and hold them inside the mouth, typically the female’s. The fry develop entirely within the buccal cavity, and in some species, the mother continues to shelter them in her mouth for weeks after hatching. During this time she eats little or nothing. In certain African mouthbrooders, females actually provision food to young still held in their mouths.

This level of parental investment is rare in fish and gives cichlid fry a much higher survival rate than species that scatter eggs and leave. It’s considered one of the key reasons cichlids have been so successful at colonizing new environments.

Size and Physical Variety

Cichlids range enormously in size. At the small end, shell-dwelling species from Lake Tanganyika like Neolamprologus multifasciatus top out at just 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) and spend their lives in and around empty snail shells on the lake floor. At the large end, species like the giant cichlid of Lake Tanganyika can exceed 30 inches. Body shape varies just as widely: deep-bodied and laterally compressed in some species, elongated and torpedo-shaped in others, depending on whether the fish lives among rocks, in open water, or buried in sand.

Social Behavior and Intelligence

Cichlids are notably intelligent for fish. Many species form complex social hierarchies with dominant and subordinate individuals, and they can recognize individual tankmates by sight. Research on closely related Lake Tanganyika cichlids found that social species and solitary species actually learn differently depending on context. In one study, solitary cichlids outperformed highly social, cooperatively breeding species on a food-reward learning task when tested alone. But when tested in a more natural social setting using shelter as a reward, the social species learned faster. This suggests cichlid cognition is tuned to the social environment each species evolved in, not simply a matter of one species being “smarter” than another.

Cooperatively breeding cichlids are especially remarkable. In these species, a dominant breeding pair is assisted by subordinate “helper” fish that defend territory and care for young that aren’t their own, a social structure more commonly associated with birds and mammals.

Keeping Cichlids in Aquariums

Cichlids are among the most widely kept aquarium fish, but their care depends heavily on which group you’re keeping. African Rift Lake cichlids from Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika thrive in hard, alkaline water with a high pH, conditions that many municipal tap water supplies naturally provide. South American cichlids generally prefer soft, neutral to slightly acidic water. Matching your tap water chemistry to the right group of cichlids is one of the simplest ways to set yourself up for success.

Temperament varies widely. Some species, like shell dwellers, are territorial but tiny enough to keep in modest tanks. Others, like larger Central American cichlids, are aggressive and need substantial space with carefully chosen tankmates. Nearly all cichlids are more interactive than typical community fish. They respond to their owners, rearrange tank decor, and display complex behaviors during breeding, which is a big part of why hobbyists find them so rewarding to keep.
