A crack wire is a small piece of metal mesh or scouring pad material used as a filter inside a glass pipe for smoking crack cocaine. It serves as a screen that holds the solid crack rock in place while allowing the user to inhale the heated vapor. These improvised screens are typically made from copper or steel wool, most commonly sold in convenience stores as household scouring pads (often under brand names like Chore Boy). The term “crack wire” can also refer to the glass stem itself or the full assembled pipe, but it most often describes the metal mesh insert.
How a Crack Wire Works
A straight glass tube, often a small novelty “glass rose” stem sold at convenience stores, forms the pipe body. A small wad of copper or steel mesh is pushed into one end of the tube. The crack rock sits on top of this mesh screen. When a flame is applied, the drug vaporizes and the user inhales through the opposite end. The metal mesh prevents the melted substance from being drawn directly into the mouth while conducting enough heat to assist vaporization.
Because these components wear out quickly, users frequently replace the mesh. Repeated heating causes the metal to degrade, releasing small fragments and fumes that get inhaled along with the drug vapor.
Health Risks of Inhaling Heated Metal
The copper mesh poses its own set of health dangers beyond the drug itself. Copper is toxic when inhaled. Breathing in copper dust and fumes can trigger a condition called metal fume fever, which causes chest pain, chills, cough, fever, headache, weakness, and a metallic taste in the mouth. These symptoms can appear within hours of exposure.
Long-term repeated exposure is more damaging. Chronic inhalation of copper fumes can cause permanent scarring of the lungs and decreased lung function over time. Steel wool screens carry similar risks, as heating any metal mesh to high temperatures repeatedly generates fine particulate matter and metallic fumes. The small fragments that break off degraded screens can also be inhaled directly, causing further irritation and injury to the airways and lung tissue.
Burns, Cuts, and Oral Injuries
Crack pipes get extremely hot during use, and the glass stems are thin and fragile. Burns to the lips, fingers, and face are common. The glass frequently chips or cracks from repeated heating cycles, creating sharp edges that cut the lips and mouth. These open wounds become entry points for infections, including bloodborne viruses like hepatitis C and HIV when pipes are shared between users. Blistered, cracked, or scarred lips are so common among crack smokers that healthcare workers sometimes refer to them as “crack lip.”
The metal mesh itself can also cause cuts inside the mouth if small fragments break loose and are accidentally inhaled or swallowed.
Why Harm Reduction Programs Distribute Safer Supplies
Many public health organizations distribute safer smoking kits that include heat-resistant glass stems, brass screens (which are more stable than copper scouring pads at high temperatures), rubber mouthpieces, and alcohol swabs. The goal is not to encourage drug use but to reduce the secondary harms that come from improvised equipment. Brass screens degrade more slowly than copper mesh, producing fewer toxic fumes per use. Rubber or silicone mouthpieces protect lips from burns and cuts, reducing the risk of wound-based infections.
These programs also provide a point of contact between people who use drugs and healthcare workers, connecting them with addiction treatment, testing for infectious diseases, and other medical services they might not otherwise access.
Signs of Crack Wire Use
If you’re concerned about someone in your life, the physical items associated with crack wire use are distinctive. Small glass tubes (sometimes with a fake flower inside as a retail disguise), copper scouring pads with pieces torn off, black residue buildup on glass, and the presence of small lighters or torch lighters are common indicators. Physical signs on the person include burns or blisters on the fingertips and lips, a persistent cough, and rapid weight loss.
