The 2025 American Heart Association guidelines shifted the clinical definition of dangerously slow heart rate (bradycardia) down to below 50 bpm, updated from the older threshold of 60 bpm. This reflects the reality that many healthy people sit comfortably in the 50s without any problems. On the high end, some clinicians now flag resting rates above 90 bpm as worth investigating, not just the traditional 100 bpm cutoff. CDC data shows that about 5 to 8 percent of adults have resting rates above 90, while only 1 to 2 percent exceed 100.
