A resting pulse below 35 to 40 beats per minute or above 100 beats per minute is generally considered dangerous, especially when accompanied by symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath. The normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 bpm, but what counts as “dangerous” depends on your age, fitness level, and whether you’re experiencing other warning signs.
When a High Pulse Rate Becomes Dangerous
A resting heart rate above 100 bpm is called tachycardia, and it signals that your heart is working harder than it should while your body is at rest. This doesn’t always mean you’re in immediate danger. Stress, anxiety, caffeine, dehydration, and certain medications can all push your resting rate above 100 temporarily. But if your pulse stays elevated without an obvious cause, something deeper may be going on.
The concern with a persistently fast heart rate is that your heart doesn’t get enough time between beats to fill with blood properly. Over time, this strains the heart muscle and can lead to complications like heart failure or blood clots. Atrial fibrillation, one of the most common heart rhythm disorders, typically drives the heart rate to between 100 and 175 bpm and produces a fast, fluttering, or irregular pulse that feels distinctly different from a normal heartbeat.
A high pulse becomes an emergency when it’s paired with chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or near-fainting. Chest pain alongside a rapid heart rate could indicate a heart attack and requires immediate emergency care. In severe cases, an extremely fast heart rate can cause you to lose consciousness.
When a Low Pulse Rate Is a Problem
A resting heart rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia, but it isn’t automatically dangerous. The threshold where a slow pulse becomes medically concerning is around 35 to 40 bpm, particularly if you’re feeling lightheaded, weak, confused, or short of breath.
The important exception is athletes. Regular aerobic exercise makes the heart stronger and more efficient, pumping more blood with each beat so it doesn’t need to beat as often. Exercise also increases activity in the vagus nerve (which helps regulate heart rhythm) and slows down the heart’s natural pacemaker cells. As a result, well-trained athletes commonly have resting heart rates of 40 to 50 bpm, and some go even lower. Cyclist Miguel Indurain, a five-time Tour de France winner, had a resting heart rate of 28 bpm. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps rested below 40 bpm. For these individuals, a slow pulse is a sign of cardiovascular fitness, not disease. A lower resting heart rate is actually linked to longer life expectancy and reduced risk of cardiovascular death.
If you’re not an athlete and your pulse drops below 40, or if a slow heart rate is new for you and comes with symptoms, that’s worth medical evaluation. A heart that beats too slowly may not deliver enough oxygen to your brain and organs, causing fatigue, dizziness, or fainting spells.
Normal Pulse Rates by Age
What looks alarming in an adult can be perfectly normal in a child. Children’s hearts beat significantly faster because their hearts are smaller and need more beats to circulate blood effectively. Here are the typical resting ranges:
- Newborns (birth to 4 weeks): 100 to 205 bpm
- Infants (4 weeks to 1 year): 100 to 180 bpm
- Toddlers (1 to 3 years): 98 to 140 bpm
- Preschool age (3 to 5 years): 80 to 120 bpm
- School age (5 to 12 years): 75 to 118 bpm
- Adolescents (13 to 17 years): 60 to 100 bpm
- Adults (18 and older): 60 to 100 bpm
These numbers apply when a person is awake and at rest. Heart rates naturally drop during sleep and rise during activity. A resting rate that consistently falls outside these ranges for the person’s age group is worth investigating.
Pulse Rate During Exercise
Your heart rate is supposed to climb during physical activity, so the thresholds for “dangerous” shift considerably when you’re exercising. The key number here is your estimated maximum heart rate, which you can calculate by multiplying your age by 0.7 and subtracting that from 208. For a 40-year-old, that’s 208 minus 28, or roughly 180 bpm.
Moderate exercise typically puts you at 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate, while vigorous exercise pushes you to 70% to 85%. There’s no single bpm number that’s universally “dangerous” during a workout, but consistently exceeding 85% of your max, especially if you’re not conditioned for it, increases the risk of overexertion. Warning signs include being unable to catch your breath, pain, or not being able to sustain the activity as long as planned. If any of those happen, ease off and let your heart rate come down gradually.
Factors That Affect Your Pulse
A higher resting heart rate is linked with lower physical fitness, higher blood pressure, and higher body weight. But your pulse on any given day is also shaped by things that have nothing to do with your baseline health. Stress and anxiety activate your body’s fight-or-flight response and push your heart rate up. Hormonal shifts, including those during menstruation, pregnancy, or thyroid disorders, can do the same. Medications like decongestants, asthma inhalers, and some antidepressants commonly raise resting heart rate, while beta-blockers and certain blood pressure medications lower it.
Fever, dehydration, and anemia are other frequent culprits behind a temporarily elevated pulse. When your blood volume drops or your blood carries less oxygen, your heart compensates by beating faster. This is why a rapid pulse during an illness doesn’t always point to a heart problem. It may simply reflect your body’s effort to keep up under difficult conditions.
What to Do if Your Pulse Feels Too Fast
If you notice your heart racing and you’re not exercising, a few simple techniques can help slow it down. These are called vagal maneuvers because they stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in controlling your heart rhythm. Coughing forcefully, bearing down as if you’re having a bowel movement, or placing an ice pack on your face can all trigger a reflexive drop in heart rate. These techniques work best for certain types of rapid heartbeat and won’t fix every situation, but they’re safe to try while you assess whether you need further help.
What matters most is the combination of your pulse rate and how you feel. A heart rate of 110 after two cups of coffee when you feel fine is a very different situation from a heart rate of 110 with chest tightness and dizziness. The rate itself is one piece of information. The symptoms that come with it tell you how urgently you need to act.
