Standard organic certification often permits the unlimited importation of organic fertilizers and pesticides, but Demeter’s closed-loop requirement drastically limits imported materials, forcing the farm to generate its own fertility from within. This on-farm nutrient cycling is achieved through the mandatory integration of livestock, whose manure must be properly composted before application, a step not uniformly mandated by organic standards.
