What Is a Distemper Shot for Cats?

A distemper shot for cats is a combination vaccine that protects against three serious viral infections: feline panleukopenia (often called “feline distemper”), feline herpesvirus, and feline calicivirus. You’ll see it labeled as the FVRCP vaccine at your vet’s office. It’s considered a core vaccine, meaning every cat should get it regardless of whether they live indoors or outdoors.

Despite the name, feline distemper is not the same disease as canine distemper. The term stuck historically, but the virus behind it, feline panleukopenia virus, is actually closely related to canine parvovirus.

What the Vaccine Protects Against

The FVRCP vaccine covers three distinct viruses, each capable of causing significant illness or death in cats without immunity.

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is the most dangerous of the three. It targets rapidly dividing cells in the body, particularly white blood cells, the intestinal lining, and bone marrow. This means it simultaneously cripples the immune system and destroys the gut’s ability to function. Infected cats develop severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, fever, and a dramatic drop in white blood cell count (that’s what “panleukopenia” means). In kittens, the mortality rate is extremely high. If a pregnant cat or newborn kitten is infected, the virus can attack developing brain tissue, causing permanent coordination problems called cerebellar hypoplasia.

Feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) causes upper respiratory infections with sneezing, nasal congestion, fever, and eye inflammation. Most cats recover, but the virus stays dormant in the body for life and can reactivate during periods of stress. The vaccine doesn’t prevent infection entirely but significantly reduces the severity of symptoms.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) also causes respiratory illness, along with oral ulcers and sometimes limping. Like herpesvirus, it circulates widely in cat populations worldwide.

Why Indoor Cats Still Need It

The American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends that all household cats, including those kept exclusively indoors, receive this vaccine. Panleukopenia virus is extraordinarily hardy in the environment and can survive on surfaces for a year or longer. You can carry it into your home on shoes, clothing, or hands after contact with an infected animal. A cat that escapes even briefly, or one that visits a vet clinic or groomer, faces potential exposure. The virus is also common in shelters, so newly adopted cats are at particular risk.

The Kitten Vaccination Schedule

Kittens receive a series of shots rather than a single dose because of the way maternal antibodies work. Antibodies from the mother’s milk protect kittens in the first weeks of life, but they also interfere with vaccination. The problem is that these maternal antibodies fade at unpredictable rates. Some kittens lose protection at 6 weeks, others not until 16 weeks or later. To close that gap, vets give the vaccine every 3 to 4 weeks starting at 6 weeks of age and continuing until 16 to 20 weeks.

Current guidelines also recommend an additional booster at 6 months of age. This was added to catch kittens whose maternal antibodies lasted long enough to block the effectiveness of the earlier shots, leaving them potentially vulnerable during that window.

Booster Schedule for Adult Cats

After the kitten series, adult cats receiving the standard injectable vaccine need a booster every three years. Cats that get the intranasal version (a spray delivered into the nose) need annual boosters instead.

If your cat is going into boarding, a shelter stay, or any high-exposure situation, revaccination 7 to 10 days beforehand is recommended, especially if the last dose was more than a year ago. The stress of boarding can reactivate latent herpesvirus, and close quarters with other cats increases exposure to calicivirus.

Vaccine Types and How They Differ

The FVRCP vaccine comes in two main forms: modified-live (MLV) and inactivated (killed). Modified-live vaccines contain weakened versions of the virus that replicate briefly in the body to trigger a strong immune response. Inactivated vaccines use virus particles that can’t replicate and typically include an adjuvant, a substance that boosts the immune reaction.

Both types provide comparable overall protection. In challenge studies where vaccinated kittens were deliberately exposed to herpesvirus, both groups had similarly low rates of clinical illness compared to unvaccinated controls. Interestingly, the inactivated vaccine performed slightly better at reducing respiratory symptoms in the first few weeks, while the modified-live version offered a small edge in reducing eye-related symptoms later on. In practice, both are considered effective.

Modern inactivated vaccines have moved away from aluminum-based adjuvants, which were once linked to injection-site tumors. Recent studies have found no difference in sarcoma risk between inactivated and modified-live vaccines.

Side Effects and Safety

The FVRCP vaccine has a strong safety profile. In large-scale monitoring, adverse events within 30 days of vaccination occurred at a rate of about 0.52% of vaccinated cats. The vast majority of reactions are mild: brief lethargy, slight fever, reduced appetite, or tenderness at the injection site, typically lasting less than 24 hours. In one study, roughly 10% of cats showed a mildly reduced general condition for a few days after vaccination, but no severe reactions were recorded.

The most serious potential complication is feline injection-site sarcoma (FISS), a type of tumor that develops at the location where a vaccine was given. This is rare, estimated at 1 to 4 cases per 10,000 vaccinated cats. Post-vaccination inflammatory reactions at the injection site occur more frequently, at about 12 per 10,000 vaccinations, but only a small fraction of those (roughly 1 in 35 to 40) ever progress to a sarcoma. Vets now rotate injection sites and use specific body locations to make early detection and treatment easier.

What It Costs

A single FVRCP dose typically runs $25 to $70 at a veterinary clinic. Low-cost vaccination clinics, animal shelters, and community events often offer it for less, sometimes bundled with other vaccines at a discount. Since kittens need multiple doses in their first year, the initial series adds up, but ongoing boosters every three years keep long-term costs modest.
