A dynamometer is a device designed to measure force, torque, or power. Often called a “dyno,” it shows up in settings ranging from auto shops to hospitals to aerospace labs, but the core job is always the same: quantify how much mechanical effort something produces. In an engine, that means measuring how hard a spinning shaft can push. In a clinical setting, it means measuring how much force a patient’s muscle can generate.
How a Dynamometer Works
Every dynamometer operates on one basic principle: apply resistance to a force and measure what happens. The simplest version is a spring dynamometer, where force stretches or compresses a spring between two mounting points, and the displacement is read on a calibrated scale in units like newtons.
For rotating machinery like engines and motors, the dynamometer provides resistance to a spinning shaft. That resistance creates torque, which is turning force. The resistance can come from mechanical friction, fluid friction, or electromagnetic induction. Once you know the torque and the rotational speed, calculating power is straightforward. The standard formula is horsepower equals torque multiplied by RPM, divided by 5,252. So a dynamometer that measures torque is, in practice, also measuring power.
Another approach connects a motor’s driving axle to a generator. As the motor spins the generator, it creates an electric current, and the power of the motor can be calculated by measuring that current.
Engine Dynos vs. Chassis Dynos
In the automotive world, dynamometers come in two main flavors: engine dynos and chassis dynos. They measure the same thing (power output), but at different points in the drivetrain, which makes them useful for different purposes.
An engine dyno bolts directly to a standalone engine. This is the tool of choice for shops building race engines or developing individual components. It allows precise, isolated testing. A builder can change one variable at a time, like trying a new exhaust lobe design on a camshaft or adjusting valve lash, and immediately see the effect on power. Engine builders who ship motors to customers also use dynos to verify there are no leaks or defects before the engine leaves the shop. As one builder put it, there may be three months of solid dyno work when developing camshafts for a new engine platform.
A chassis dyno measures power at the wheels, with the entire vehicle sitting on rollers. Because the power has to travel through the transmission, driveshaft, differential, and axles before reaching the rollers, some energy is lost to friction along the way. These drivetrain losses typically range from 10% to 15%, though they can be higher depending on the vehicle. So a car producing 100 horsepower at the engine might show around 80 to 85 horsepower on a chassis dyno. That gap is normal and expected.
Chassis dynos are especially useful for tuning a complete vehicle and diagnosing drivetrain problems. Putting a car under load on the rollers can reveal issues like leaks, vibrations, or weak points in the drivetrain that wouldn’t show up in a parking lot. They’re also the standard tool for verifying that a freshly built or modified vehicle is safe to drive.
Measuring Muscle Strength in Medicine
Dynamometers aren’t limited to machines. Handheld dynamometers are a standard clinical tool for measuring how much force a person’s muscles can produce. A clinician holds the device against a patient’s limb and asks the patient to push as hard as possible. The device records the peak force in a precise, repeatable way.
This matters most in settings where tracking small changes in strength has real consequences. In intensive care units, for example, patients can lose muscle mass and strength rapidly. Handheld dynamometry can detect minimum strength changes that older methods like manual muscle testing would miss. Clinicians measure muscle groups including the biceps, triceps, deltoid, quadriceps, and ankle muscles, typically taking three readings per muscle and recording the best one. Repeating these measurements over days (such as on day 3, 5, and 7 of an ICU stay) creates a trend line that guides rehabilitation decisions.
Early detection of strength loss lets physical therapists intervene sooner, which improves outcomes for critically ill patients who need to regain mobility. Dynamometry has been accepted as a reliable method for skeletal muscle strength assessment in ICU populations and is increasingly used as a routine part of physiotherapy evaluation.
Aerospace and Marine Applications
Propeller-driven aircraft and marine vessels also rely on dynamometers, though the key measurement shifts from torque alone to both torque and thrust. A propeller dynamometer measures the turning force on the propeller shaft alongside the forward push (thrust) the propeller generates.
Thrust is typically measured using a load cell positioned inline with the propeller shaft or in an offset moment-arm arrangement. Torque is measured similarly. Inline configurations tend to be more accurate because they minimize the effect of vibrations that offset setups can amplify. These dynamometers are used extensively in wind tunnel testing for unmanned aircraft, where engineers validate propeller performance data before flight. NASA, university research labs, and defense contractors all use variations of these systems to characterize propulsion performance under controlled conditions.
What All Dynamometers Share
Whether it’s a spring scale measuring a few newtons of pull, a 2,000-horsepower engine dyno in a racing shop, or a handheld device in a hospital room, every dynamometer is built around the same idea: turn an invisible force into a number you can read, record, and compare. The design specifics change dramatically across applications, but the purpose stays constant. You apply or resist a force, measure the result, and use that data to make better decisions about the engine, the vehicle, the patient, or the propeller sitting in front of you.
