A flashbulb memory is a vivid, detailed recollection of the exact moment you first learned about a surprising, emotionally powerful event. You remember not just the event itself but the personal circumstances surrounding it: where you were, what you were doing, who told you, and how you felt. Most people over a certain age can describe exactly where they were when they heard about the September 11 attacks, for example, or the death of a public figure. These intensely clear snapshots of personal context are flashbulb memories.

What Makes a Memory a Flashbulb Memory

Psychologists Roger Brown and James Kulik introduced the concept in 1977 after studying how people remembered learning about shocking public events, including the assassination of President Kennedy. They found that these memories felt almost photographic in their vividness and that they consistently contained the same types of detail: the place where you were, what you were doing at the time, who told you the news, how you felt, how others around you reacted, and what happened immediately afterward.

Three ingredients typically combine to create a flashbulb memory. First, the event has to be surprising or unexpected. Second, it needs to feel personally important or consequential. Third, it triggers strong emotion, whether shock, grief, fear, or even joy. When all three factors align, the brain seems to encode not just the event but the entire scene around it in unusual detail. A routine news story, no matter how tragic, won’t produce a flashbulb memory if it doesn’t feel personally relevant or catch you off guard.

The “Print Now” Theory

Brown and Kulik proposed that flashbulb memories might rely on a special brain mechanism they called “Print Now.” The idea was that extreme emotional arousal triggers a kind of mental snapshot, instantly preserving everything happening in that moment with unusual permanence and clarity. Under this theory, flashbulb memories aren’t just strong versions of regular memories. They’re a fundamentally different product, created by a distinct set of processes that only activate under specific emotional conditions.

This was an appealing explanation for why these memories feel so different from ordinary ones. But it also raised a testable question: if a special mechanism stamps these memories into the brain like a photograph, they should be exceptionally accurate over time. That prediction has not held up well.

They Feel Accurate, but Often Aren’t

The most striking finding in flashbulb memory research is the gap between how confident people feel about these memories and how accurate the memories actually are. In a landmark study, psychologist Ulric Neisser collected questionnaires from 44 psychology students the morning after the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, asking them to describe how they heard the news. Nearly three years later, he asked the same students the same questions. Over 40% of them gave clearly inconsistent answers, sometimes describing completely different locations or companions. Yet many of these students were highly confident their later (inaccurate) versions were correct.

A similar pattern emerged after September 11, 2001. Researchers at Duke University had 54 students record both their memory of hearing about the attacks and a memory of a recent everyday event, starting the day after the attacks. When tested again at intervals up to 32 weeks later, the consistency of flashbulb memories and everyday memories declined at the same rate. The flashbulb memories weren’t more stable or reliable than ordinary ones. The only real difference was confidence: students remained far more certain that their 9/11 memories were accurate, even as those memories shifted just as much as any other recollection.

Why They Feel So Real

If flashbulb memories aren’t more accurate than everyday memories, why do they feel so vivid and trustworthy? A large part of the answer is rehearsal. After a major event, you think about it constantly. You talk about it with friends, watch news coverage, read articles, and mentally replay the moment over and over. Each retelling strengthens the memory’s emotional intensity and the feeling that you remember it perfectly. But rehearsal also introduces subtle distortions. Details get smoothed out, rearranged, or replaced with information you picked up later, and you have no way of noticing the changes because the memory still feels sharp and complete.

This is why researchers now generally view flashbulb memories as strong ordinary memories rather than products of a special mechanism. The emotional weight of the event drives more initial attention and more frequent rehearsal, which keeps the memory vivid. But the same processes that maintain vividness also allow the same kinds of errors and distortions that affect any other memory. The “Print Now” idea of a permanent, photograph-like imprint has largely given way to this more nuanced understanding.

Common Examples

Flashbulb memories tend to cluster around events that are both publicly significant and personally felt. For older generations, the assassination of JFK or the moon landing are classic examples. For people who lived through the 1980s, the Challenger disaster. For most adults alive today, September 11 is the most universally shared flashbulb memory. More recently, the announcement of COVID-19 lockdowns has become a common one.

But flashbulb memories don’t have to involve global events. Any moment that combines surprise, personal importance, and strong emotion can produce one. Receiving an unexpected diagnosis, learning about the sudden death of someone close to you, or even hearing life-changing good news can all create that same vivid, scene-like quality. What matters is the emotional impact on you, not the scale of the event itself.

What Flashbulb Memories Reveal About How Memory Works

Flashbulb memories are a useful window into a broader truth about human memory: vividness and accuracy are not the same thing. Your brain doesn’t record experiences like a video camera. It reconstructs them each time you remember, filling in gaps and updating details without your awareness. The more emotionally important a memory is, the more vivid it feels, but that vividness reflects emotional significance, not fidelity to what actually happened.

This has practical implications beyond psychology research. Eyewitness testimony, for instance, can be powerfully convincing precisely because the witness genuinely believes their vivid memory is accurate. Understanding flashbulb memories helps explain why confident, detailed recall and factual accuracy can come apart so dramatically, and why strong feelings about a memory are not reliable proof that the memory is correct.
