What Is a Good Average Heart Rate for Adults?

A good resting heart rate for most adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). Within that range, lower is generally better. People who are physically active tend to sit closer to 60 bpm or even below it, while sedentary adults typically land higher. Your resting heart rate is measured while you’re awake, calm, and not moving, and it’s one of the simplest indicators of cardiovascular fitness.

What the Numbers Mean

The 60 to 100 bpm window is the standard reference range used by major medical institutions, but not every number in that range carries the same meaning. A resting heart rate in the 60s or 70s typically reflects a heart that pumps blood efficiently without needing to work too hard. A rate consistently in the 90s, while technically “normal,” may signal that your heart is under more strain to deliver the same amount of blood.

A large study tracking nearly 6,000 adults over 25 years found that people whose resting heart rate gradually increased over time were 65% more likely to develop heart failure and 69% more likely to die from any cause compared to those whose heart rate stayed stable or dipped slightly. The good news: more than 88% of participants fell into the stable or slightly declining pattern. Only about half a percent experienced a sharp upward trend.

Below 60 bpm is clinically called bradycardia, but it isn’t automatically a problem. Well-trained athletes routinely have resting rates in the 40s and 50s because their hearts are strong enough to pump more blood per beat. If you’re not particularly active and your heart rate regularly drops below 60, or if you feel dizzy or fatigued, that’s worth paying attention to. On the high end, a resting rate that stays above 100 bpm is called tachycardia and usually warrants a medical evaluation.

How Fitness Level Changes Your Baseline

Your level of physical activity is the single biggest factor you can control. In a study comparing 90 trained athletes to 90 sedentary men of the same age, the athletes averaged a resting heart rate of about 62 bpm while the untrained group averaged around 78 bpm. That 16-beat difference reflects real cardiovascular efficiency: a stronger heart moves more blood with each contraction, so it doesn’t need to beat as often.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete to see improvements. Regular aerobic exercise, even brisk walking, can lower your resting heart rate by several beats over a period of weeks to months. If your resting rate is in the 80s or 90s and you’re otherwise healthy, consistent cardio is the most effective way to bring it down.

Your Heart Rate During Exercise

Resting heart rate tells you about your baseline fitness. Your heart rate during exercise tells you how hard you’re working. The standard formula for estimating your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. So a 40-year-old has an estimated max of 180 bpm.

From there, exercise intensity breaks into two useful zones:

  • Moderate intensity: 50% to 70% of your max. For that 40-year-old, this is roughly 90 to 126 bpm. Think brisk walking, casual cycling, or light swimming. The general recommendation is about 2.5 hours per week at this level.
  • Vigorous intensity: 70% to 85% of your max, or about 126 to 153 bpm for a 40-year-old. Running, fast cycling, or high-intensity interval training fall here. About 1 hour and 15 minutes per week at this intensity meets the same guidelines.

These are estimates. Some medications, particularly beta-blockers, artificially lower heart rate and make the formula unreliable. If your heart rate during a workout feels mismatched with how hard you’re actually working, perceived effort is a better guide.

What Your Sleeping Heart Rate Reveals

If you wear a fitness tracker or smartwatch overnight, you’ll notice your heart rate drops while you sleep. This is normal and expected. Your sleeping heart rate typically runs 20% to 30% lower than your daytime resting rate, putting most healthy adults somewhere between 50 and 75 bpm during the night.

This overnight dip is actually a useful health signal. A consistent sleeping heart rate gives you a cleaner measurement than daytime readings because it removes the effects of movement, stress, and stimulants. If your sleeping heart rate trends upward over weeks without an obvious cause like illness, poor sleep, or increased alcohol intake, it can be an early sign that something is off before you notice other symptoms.

Factors That Temporarily Shift Your Heart Rate

Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It fluctuates day to day and even hour to hour based on what’s happening in your body and environment. Stress is one of the most common causes. Mental or work-related stress activates your fight-or-flight response, which pushes your heart rate up and can keep it elevated for hours. Heat does something similar: hot weather or a hot room increases sympathetic nervous system activity, making your heart beat faster even when you’re sitting still.

Caffeine, dehydration, poor sleep, and illness all raise your resting rate temporarily. So does shift work, particularly night shifts, which disrupts your body’s normal rhythms and keeps your nervous system in a more activated state. Noise exposure has the same effect. If you’re trying to get a true baseline measurement, take your pulse first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, on a day when you slept reasonably well and aren’t sick.

How to Measure Accurately

Place two fingers on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb, or on the side of your neck just below the jawline. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two. Do this while sitting quietly for at least five minutes beforehand.

Wearable devices like smartwatches use optical sensors to track heart rate continuously. These are generally reliable for resting measurements, though they can be less accurate during high-intensity exercise when your wrist moves a lot. The real value of wearables is in tracking trends over weeks and months rather than focusing on any single reading. A gradual downward trend in your resting rate usually means your cardiovascular fitness is improving. A persistent upward trend, especially one you can’t explain, is worth discussing with a doctor.
