A good HRV status on Garmin is “Balanced,” meaning your 7-day average heart rate variability falls within your personal baseline range. This is the status you want to see most of the time. It signals that your body is recovering well and handling the demands of training, work, and daily life. Garmin uses four status labels: Balanced, Unbalanced, Low, and Poor, each telling you something different about how your nervous system is coping.

How Garmin Calculates Your HRV Status

Your Garmin watch measures HRV overnight using the optical heart rate sensor on your wrist. It records the variation in time between heartbeats while you sleep, then calculates a nightly average. From there, it builds a 7-day rolling average and compares that number against your personal baseline, a range the watch establishes over roughly three weeks of consistent wear.

This personal baseline is key. Garmin doesn’t compare you to population averages or other users. It compares your recent readings to your own typical range. That means a “good” HRV number for you might look very different from someone else’s, and that’s fine. What matters is whether your current trend is consistent with your own normal.

What Each Status Label Means

Balanced is the target. Your 7-day average sits within your personal baseline range. Your body is adapting well to whatever you’re throwing at it.

Unbalanced means your 7-day average has drifted outside your baseline. This can go in either direction. A reading slightly below baseline could reflect a hard training week, a few poor nights of sleep, or a couple of drinks. A reading above baseline sometimes shows up during a recovery or taper phase. Unbalanced isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s a signal to pay attention.

Low is more serious. Your 7-day average has dropped significantly below your baseline. This often points to accumulated fatigue, illness coming on, high stress, or insufficient recovery over multiple days.

Poor is the most concerning label. It means your entire baseline has fallen below age-based thresholds that Garmin associates with good health. When this happens, the watch stops displaying your baseline range altogether. A persistent Poor status could reflect chronic stress, detraining, illness, or other underlying health issues.

Typical HRV Numbers by Age

While Garmin focuses on your personal trend rather than a single number, it helps to know where your raw values fall relative to the general population. HRV is measured in milliseconds (ms) using a metric called RMSSD. Here are median (50th percentile) values by age group:

  • Ages 18–24: 46–48 ms
  • Ages 25–34: 41–43 ms
  • Ages 35–44: 34–36 ms
  • Ages 45–54: 28–30 ms

Endurance athletes and people with naturally strong parasympathetic (rest-and-recover) nervous system activity often land above the 90th percentile for their age, which can mean values in the 60s, 70s, or higher for younger adults. On the other end, consistently falling below the 10th percentile for your age and sex, especially alongside fatigue or elevated resting heart rate, is a pattern worth investigating. For a 35-year-old male, that 10th percentile threshold is around 21 ms.

HRV declines naturally with age, so a 55-year-old with a baseline of 25 ms isn’t in worse shape than a 22-year-old at 48 ms. They’re just at different biological starting points. This is exactly why Garmin’s personal baseline approach is more useful than chasing a single “good” number.

What Pushes HRV Status Down

Sleep quality is the single strongest predictor of your overnight HRV reading. Poor sleep almost guarantees a lower number. Beyond that, several common factors reliably drop HRV:

Alcohol has a measurable effect even at one drink, reducing HRV by roughly 2 to 13 ms depending on how much you consume. Three or more drinks in an evening will noticeably tank your next-morning reading. Being young and fit doesn’t protect against this effect.

Training load matters too. If your HRV trends downward over several days despite consistent training, your body is telling you the workload is too high. This is one of the most practical uses of HRV tracking: catching overreaching before it becomes full-blown overtraining.

Chronic psychological stress keeps your fight-or-flight system activated, suppressing the rest-and-recover activity that produces higher HRV. Dehydration raises your resting heart rate by 5 to 6 beats per minute and shifts your nervous system in the same direction. Illness, even before symptoms appear, often shows up as a sudden HRV drop. For women, HRV typically dips in the week before a period due to hormonal shifts, which is normal and expected. Caffeine doesn’t necessarily lower your baseline HRV, but it slows how quickly HRV recovers after exercise. Even altitude above about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) triggers a temporary HRV decrease as your body works harder to maintain oxygen levels.

How HRV Status Feeds Into Training Readiness

Garmin doesn’t treat HRV status as an isolated metric. It’s one of several inputs that determine your Training Readiness score, the number you see each morning that tells you how prepared your body is for exercise. The biggest factors in that score are last night’s sleep quality and how much recovery time you still need from recent workouts. HRV status, recent stress levels, and your sleep history over the past several nights round out the picture.

The Training Readiness score updates when you wake up, pulling in your latest overnight HRV data along with everything else. A Balanced HRV status generally supports a higher readiness score, while Low or Poor status pulls it down. If your readiness score is consistently low and your HRV status is Unbalanced or worse, the practical move is to prioritize recovery: easier workouts, better sleep habits, less alcohol, and managing stress.

Getting Reliable Readings

Your watch needs several weeks of nightly data before HRV status becomes meaningful. During this initial period, you may not see a status label at all, or the readings may fluctuate more than expected. This is normal. The baseline stabilizes once the watch has enough data points to define your personal range.

For the most accurate readings, wear the watch snugly every night. Consistency matters more than any single night’s number, which is why Garmin uses a 7-day rolling average rather than showing you daily swings. A single bad night doesn’t mean much. A week-long downward trend does.

It’s also worth knowing that wrist-based optical sensors aren’t as precise as medical-grade chest straps or ECG monitors. Research shows moderate correlations between Garmin’s metrics and clinical HRV measurements. The watch is reliable enough to track trends over time, which is what matters for day-to-day training and recovery decisions. It’s less suited for diagnosing health conditions or making clinical judgments based on a single reading.

What to Do With Each Status

If you’re Balanced most of the time, your current lifestyle and training are working. No changes needed.

If you’re Unbalanced, look at the obvious candidates first. Did you drink more than usual? Sleep poorly for a few nights? Ramp up training volume? Most of the time, an Unbalanced reading resolves within a few days once you address the trigger.

If you’re Low, consider scaling back training intensity for several days and focusing on sleep, hydration, and stress management. A Low status that persists for more than a week or two despite these adjustments is worth taking seriously, especially if you also feel unusually fatigued.

If you’re seeing Poor status, something more fundamental is going on. Your overall baseline has dropped below healthy norms for your age. This could reflect prolonged overtraining, chronic illness, sustained high stress, or significant lifestyle factors like heavy drinking or smoking. It’s the one status label that points beyond day-to-day recovery and toward broader health patterns.
