A good resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). Within that range, lower is generally better. A heart that beats fewer times per minute is pumping blood efficiently, which is why fit individuals often have resting rates in the 50s or even 40s. Your heart rate shifts throughout the day depending on what you’re doing, how stressed you are, and how well you slept, so understanding the full picture matters more than any single number.
Resting Heart Rate by Age
The 60 to 100 bpm range applies to adults and children over 10. Younger children have naturally faster hearts because their bodies are smaller and their hearts need to beat more often to circulate blood. Newborns through 3 months old have awake heart rates of 85 to 205 bpm. Between 3 months and 2 years, that range is 100 to 190 bpm. From ages 2 to 10, a normal awake heart rate is 60 to 140 bpm. After age 10, the adult range of 60 to 100 applies for the rest of life.
To get an accurate resting reading, you need to be awake, calm, and sitting still. First thing in the morning before getting out of bed is ideal. If you’ve just climbed stairs, had coffee, or been anxious, your reading won’t reflect your true baseline.
How to Check Your Pulse
The two easiest spots are your wrist and your neck. For the wrist, place two fingers (index and middle) on the inside of your opposite wrist, just below the base of your thumb. For the neck, press gently on either side of your windpipe. Once you feel a steady beat, count for a full 60 seconds. A shortcut is to count for 15 seconds and multiply by four, though the full minute gives a more reliable number.
Wearable devices and smartwatches can track your heart rate continuously, which is useful for spotting trends over weeks and months. They’re less precise on any single reading, but the patterns they capture, especially overnight, give you data you’d never get from a manual pulse check.
What Your Sleeping Heart Rate Should Look Like
Your heart rate naturally drops while you sleep, typically running 20% to 30% lower than your daytime resting rate. For most healthy adults, that means a sleeping heart rate of roughly 50 to 75 bpm. Anything between 40 and 100 bpm during sleep is considered within the normal window. A sleeping heart rate consistently below 40 or above 100 is worth bringing up with a doctor.
Sleep heart rate can be one of the earliest signals that something is off. Illness, poor recovery from exercise, alcohol, and stress all tend to push your overnight rate higher than usual. If you use a wearable, watching for upward trends in your sleep heart rate is a simple way to monitor your overall health.
Heart Rate During Exercise
When you’re working out, a “good” heart rate depends on how hard you’re trying to push. The standard formula for estimating your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. So a 40-year-old has an estimated max of 180 bpm.
The American Heart Association breaks exercise intensity into two zones based on that maximum:
- Moderate intensity: 50% to 70% of your max. For a 40-year-old, that’s roughly 90 to 126 bpm. This is a brisk walk or easy bike ride where you can still hold a conversation.
- Vigorous intensity: 70% to 85% of your max. For the same 40-year-old, that’s 126 to 153 bpm. Think running, swimming laps, or a hard cycling session where talking becomes difficult.
You don’t need to hit the vigorous zone to get health benefits. Most of the cardiovascular gains come from consistent moderate-intensity exercise. The vigorous zone improves fitness faster but isn’t necessary for general health.
Recovery Heart Rate as a Fitness Marker
How quickly your heart rate drops after you stop exercising is one of the best indicators of cardiovascular fitness. A good recovery is a drop of 18 beats or more within the first minute after stopping intense activity. The faster your heart rate falls back toward its resting level, the more efficiently your cardiovascular system is working. If your heart rate barely budges in that first minute, your fitness level has room for improvement, or it could signal that your heart is working harder than it should be.
What Affects Your Heart Rate Day to Day
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It fluctuates based on dozens of factors, and understanding the common ones helps you interpret your readings without unnecessary worry.
Caffeine triggers the release of stress hormones that can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. That said, regular coffee drinkers often develop a tolerance, and many people see no measurable increase from their usual cup. If you’re sensitive to caffeine or drink more than usual, you may notice a temporary bump of several beats per minute.
Dehydration forces your heart to work harder because there’s less blood volume to circulate. Even mild dehydration on a hot day can push your resting rate up noticeably. Stress and anxiety activate the same fight-or-flight response, sending your rate higher. Poor sleep, fever, and illness all do the same. On the flip side, consistent aerobic exercise, good hydration, and stress management tend to lower your resting rate over time.
Certain medications also shift your baseline. Blood pressure medications like beta-blockers are specifically designed to slow heart rate, and it’s common for people on them to have resting rates in the 50s or lower. Asthma inhalers and stimulant medications for ADHD can push heart rate higher. If you take any of these, your “normal” will look different from the standard range, and your prescribing doctor will have discussed what to expect.
Why Athletes Have Unusually Low Heart Rates
Endurance athletes routinely have resting heart rates well below 60 bpm, and this is a sign of a highly efficient heart rather than a problem. In a study of 465 endurance athletes, 38% had heart rates at or below 40 bpm on a 24-hour monitor. A small number, about 2%, dipped to 30 bpm or lower. Two things drive this: the nerve that slows the heart (the vagus nerve) becomes more active with sustained training, and the heart’s natural pacemaker physically remodels itself to beat more slowly. Genetics also play a role, meaning some people are predisposed to lower rates even before they start training.
When a Heart Rate Signals a Problem
A resting heart rate below 60 bpm is technically called bradycardia, but it’s only a concern if it causes symptoms. Many healthy, active people sit in the 50s with no issues. The warning signs that a slow heart rate needs attention include dizziness, fainting or near-fainting, unusual fatigue (especially during physical activity), confusion, chest pain, and shortness of breath. These symptoms suggest your heart isn’t pumping enough blood to meet your body’s needs.
On the other end, a resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm (called tachycardia) can indicate an overactive thyroid, anemia, dehydration, anxiety disorders, or heart rhythm problems. A temporarily elevated rate from exercise, caffeine, or stress is normal. A persistently high rate at rest, especially with palpitations, dizziness, or chest discomfort, deserves medical evaluation.
The trend matters more than any single reading. If your resting heart rate has been steady in the 60s for years and suddenly jumps to the 80s or 90s without an obvious explanation, that change is more significant than the absolute number.
