A good resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (BPM). Within that range, lower is generally better. It signals that your heart muscle is strong enough to pump the blood your body needs without working overtime. Highly trained athletes often rest as low as 40 BPM, which is perfectly healthy for them.

Normal Resting Heart Rate by Fitness Level

The 60 to 100 BPM window is the standard reference range used by both the American Heart Association and Mayo Clinic. Most healthy adults land somewhere in the middle of that range when they’re sitting quietly and haven’t recently exercised, eaten a large meal, or had caffeine.

If you exercise regularly, your resting heart rate will trend toward the lower end. That’s because aerobic training strengthens the heart so each beat pushes out more blood, meaning fewer beats are needed per minute. Someone who runs, swims, or cycles consistently might sit at 50 to 60 BPM. Competitive endurance athletes can dip to 40 BPM or even slightly below without any cause for concern.

A resting heart rate that stays above 80 or 90 BPM when you’re otherwise calm and healthy isn’t dangerous on its own, but it may suggest your cardiovascular fitness has room to improve. Over time, a consistently elevated resting rate has been linked to higher strain on the heart and blood vessels.

How to Check Your Pulse Accurately

Turn one hand palm-up. Place the middle three fingers of your other hand on the inside of that wrist, just below the base of the thumb. Press firmly until you feel a steady throb. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two to get your BPM. For the most accurate resting reading, check first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, or after sitting quietly for at least five minutes.

Wearable devices and smartwatches give continuous readings, which can be useful for spotting trends. But they occasionally misread during movement, so a manual check is a good backup when the number seems off.

Your Heart Rate During Sleep

Your heart rate naturally drops while you sleep, typically running about 20% to 30% lower than your daytime resting rate. For most healthy adults, that means somewhere between 50 and 75 BPM overnight. If you track your heart rate with a wearable, don’t be alarmed by numbers in the low 50s or even high 40s during deep sleep stages.

A sleeping heart rate outside the 40 to 100 BPM range is generally considered abnormal and worth bringing up with a doctor, especially if it’s accompanied by poor sleep quality or daytime fatigue.

Target Heart Rate During Exercise

When you’re working out, you want your heart rate to climb well above resting levels. The key number to know is your estimated maximum heart rate, which you can calculate by multiplying your age by 0.7 and subtracting that from 208. A 40-year-old, for example, would have an estimated max of about 180 BPM.

From there, exercise intensity breaks down into two zones:

  • Moderate intensity: 50% to 70% of your maximum. For that 40-year-old, roughly 90 to 126 BPM. This is brisk walking, casual cycling, or an easy swim.
  • Vigorous intensity: 70% to 85% of your maximum. For the same person, about 126 to 153 BPM. Think running, fast cycling, or high-intensity interval training.

These formulas are estimates. The older “220 minus your age” calculation is still widely quoted, but a more accurate version (208 minus 0.7 times your age) tends to perform better, particularly for men. Both formulas can be off by several BPM depending on your individual physiology, so treat them as guidelines rather than hard limits. If you can hold a conversation but feel challenged, you’re likely in the moderate zone. If talking becomes difficult, you’ve crossed into vigorous territory.

What Affects Your Resting Heart Rate

Your heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day and across weeks depending on several factors. Age plays a role: children naturally have faster heart rates, and resting rates can change as you move through adulthood. Stress, dehydration, heat, and illness all push the number up temporarily. Even standing after sitting for a while causes a brief spike.

Caffeine and other stimulants raise heart rate by increasing the activity of your nervous system. On the other side, certain medications lower it. Blood pressure drugs in the beta-blocker family work partly by slowing the heart, so if you take one and your resting rate sits in the 50s, that’s expected rather than alarming. Some asthma medications (bronchodilators) can push heart rate up as a side effect.

Hormonal changes matter too. Thyroid disorders are a common medical cause of an unexpectedly fast or slow pulse. Pregnancy increases resting heart rate as blood volume rises. Even your menstrual cycle can shift your rate by a few BPM across the month.

When a Heart Rate Is Too Fast or Too Slow

A resting heart rate consistently above 100 BPM is called tachycardia. It doesn’t always signal a serious problem (anxiety, fever, or too much coffee can all push you past 100), but it shouldn’t be ignored if it keeps happening at rest without an obvious trigger.

A resting rate below 60 BPM is technically called bradycardia. For fit, active people this is normal and healthy. It becomes a concern only when a slow heart rate causes symptoms like dizziness, unusual fatigue, or feeling faint, suggesting the heart isn’t pumping enough blood to meet your body’s demands.

The BPM number alone doesn’t tell the full story. What matters more is how you feel alongside that number. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, a pounding or fluttering sensation in your chest, dizziness, or fainting. These symptoms paired with an unusually fast or slow heart rate can indicate a rhythm problem that needs urgent evaluation.

How to Improve Your Resting Heart Rate

The single most effective way to lower your resting heart rate is regular aerobic exercise. Even moderate activity like brisk walking for 30 minutes most days of the week strengthens the heart muscle over time. Most people see a noticeable drop in resting rate within a few weeks to a couple of months of consistent training.

Beyond exercise, managing stress helps. Chronic stress keeps your nervous system in a heightened state, which holds your heart rate above where it would naturally sit. Adequate sleep, staying hydrated, and limiting excessive caffeine or alcohol all contribute to a steadier, lower resting rate. If your resting heart rate trends upward over weeks without a clear reason, it can be an early signal that something is off, whether that’s overtraining, poor sleep, mounting stress, or an underlying health issue worth investigating.
