These ranges can shift depending on age, pregnancy, altitude, and smoking status, so a number that looks low on paper might be perfectly normal for your situation.

Normal Ranges for Men and Women

Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. Labs measure it in grams per deciliter (g/dL), and the “normal” window differs between men and women because of hormonal differences in red blood cell production.

The Mayo Clinic defines healthy hemoglobin as 13.2 to 16.6 g/dL for men and 11.6 to 15 g/dL for women. Cleveland Clinic uses a slightly different range: 14.0 to 17.5 g/dL for men and 12.3 to 15.3 g/dL for women. This variation is normal. Each lab sets its own reference range based on the equipment it uses, which is why your results always come printed alongside that specific lab’s “normal” bracket. What Counts as Too Low

When hemoglobin drops below normal, your body doesn’t get enough oxygen. The result is fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath, especially during physical activity. Mild drops below the normal range often produce no symptoms at all, particularly if the decline happens gradually. Your body adapts by pumping blood faster and extracting oxygen more efficiently. But once levels fall far enough, those compensations aren’t enough, and you’ll notice the difference in your energy, exercise tolerance, and even your ability to concentrate.

What Counts as Too High

A hemoglobin level above the normal range can also cause problems. Thick, oxygen-rich blood sounds like a good thing, but it increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Labs generally don’t publish separate reference ranges for seniors, which means a 75-year-old man with a hemoglobin of 13.0 g/dL might see his result flagged as low even though it could be his normal baseline. The trend over time matters more than any single reading. A stable number that sits just below the cutoff is very different from one that has been dropping steadily over several months.

Altitude and Smoking Adjustments

Your environment affects what a “normal” hemoglobin looks like. At higher altitudes, the air contains less oxygen, so your body produces more red blood cells to compensate. A person living in Denver or Mexico City will naturally run higher than someone at sea level, and that elevated number is healthy for them.

Smoking has a similar effect. Carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke binds to hemoglobin and takes it out of commission, so the body ramps up production to make up the difference. If you’re an endurance athlete, you may have heard that higher hemoglobin equals better performance. That’s partially true. More hemoglobin means more oxygen delivery to working muscles. Research on elite cross-country skiers and triathletes shows that national-team-level athletes tend to carry about 14 to 15 grams of hemoglobin per kilogram of body weight, a measurement called hemoglobin mass that captures total oxygen-carrying capacity rather than concentration in a blood sample.

Interestingly, long-term endurance training alone doesn’t increase hemoglobin mass. Elite athletes who have high levels likely started with a genetic advantage rather than building it through years of training. Altitude training camps can temporarily boost red blood cell production, which is why they’re a staple of professional endurance programs, but the effect fades within weeks of returning to lower elevations.

What Your Result Actually Tells You

A hemoglobin test is a snapshot of your oxygen-carrying capacity at one moment in time. Hydration, recent exercise, time of day, and even the position of your arm during the blood draw can nudge the number slightly. A single result that falls just outside the reference range rarely means something is wrong.

What matters more is context: how you feel, whether the number has changed from previous tests, and whether other blood markers (like iron, vitamin B12, or red blood cell size) tell a consistent story. If your hemoglobin sits comfortably within your lab’s reference range and you have no symptoms of fatigue or shortness of breath, your number is good.
