A good protein drink delivers 20 to 30 grams of protein per serving from a high-quality source, with minimal added sugar and a short, recognizable ingredient list. Beyond that baseline, the best choice depends on your goals, your stomach, and how much you care about what else might be lurking in the container. Here’s how to evaluate what you’re buying.
How Much Protein Per Serving Actually Matters
The sweet spot for a single serving is 30 grams of protein. Research on muscle protein synthesis, the process your body uses to repair and build muscle tissue, shows that 30 grams in one sitting is enough to maximally stimulate that process. Going higher than 30 grams in a single dose doesn’t produce a meaningfully bigger response. - Sugar alcohols: Ingredients like sorbitol, maltitol, and erythritol are low-calorie sweeteners that can cause gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort, especially when you’re combining multiple sources. If your protein powder already contains erythritol and you blend it with a sugar-free syrup containing sorbitol, you’re stacking sugar alcohols and increasing the odds of stomach trouble.
- Thickeners and gums: Xanthan gum, guar gum, and carrageenan are common texture agents. Small amounts are generally fine for most people, but if you notice bloating after your shakes, these are worth eliminating to see if symptoms improve.
- Artificial sweeteners vs. natural options: Stevia and monk fruit are the most common natural alternatives. Stevia has some interesting research behind it: studies show it can reduce appetite before meals and lower total food intake compared to plain water. The main downside is a slightly bitter or metallic aftertaste that some people notice. Monk fruit tends to taste cleaner but costs more. Neither adds calories.
The Heavy Metal Problem
Protein powders can contain trace amounts of lead, cadmium, and arsenic. This isn’t about shady brands cutting corners. Heavy metals occur naturally in soil, and plants (including the grains and legumes used in plant-based proteins) absorb them as they grow. The concentration ends up in the final product.
A 2025 investigation by Consumer Reports found that two-thirds of the 23 popular protein products they tested contained more than 0.5 micrograms of lead per serving, the threshold California’s Proposition 65 law considers the maximum allowable daily dose. For context, federal interim reference levels are higher: 8.8 micrograms per day for women of childbearing age and 2.2 micrograms per day for children. Most products fall well below those federal levels, but if you’re drinking a shake every single day, even small amounts accumulate.
Plant-based proteins, especially those containing cocoa or chocolate flavoring, tend to test higher for heavy metals than whey-based options. If this concerns you, look for brands that publish third-party lab results showing their heavy metal levels.
Why Third-Party Testing Matters
Protein drinks are classified as dietary supplements, which means they don’t need FDA approval before hitting shelves. The label might not tell the full story. Some products have been found to contain hidden ingredients, including pharmaceuticals and substances banned in competitive sports.
The most reliable safeguard is third-party certification. NSF Certified for Sport is the gold standard, recommended by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Products with this label have been independently tested for banned substances and contaminants. Informed Sport is another reputable certification. Even if you’re not a competitive athlete, these certifications tell you that someone other than the manufacturer has verified what’s actually in the container.
Ready-to-Drink vs. Powder
Ready-to-drink (RTD) shakes are convenient but come with tradeoffs. They typically cost two to three times more per serving than powder. They also tend to contain more stabilizers, emulsifiers, and preservatives to maintain shelf life and texture. If you’re focused on muscle building or recovery, aim for 30 grams of whey protein (isolate if dairy bothers you) with at least 2.5 grams of leucine. Drink it within a couple hours of your workout, though the timing window is wider than most people think.
If you’re using protein drinks for weight management, prioritize low sugar, moderate calories (under 200 per serving), and high protein to keep you full. A drink sweetened with stevia may offer a slight edge here, since research suggests stevia can reduce hunger before meals. Casein or a casein-whey blend digests slowly and may help you stay satisfied longer between meals.
If you’re replacing a meal on the go, a protein drink alone probably isn’t enough. Look for options that also include some fat and fiber, or blend your powder with ingredients that provide those. A shake with 30 grams of protein but zero fat and zero fiber won’t keep you full the way a balanced meal would.
If you have digestive sensitivities, start with a whey isolate or a plant-based blend.
