A good resting pulse for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). Within that range, lower generally signals a more efficient heart. Your pulse can shift based on fitness level, age, medications, and even how much caffeine you’ve had that day, so a single reading is just a snapshot.
Normal Resting Pulse by Age
Heart rate slows steadily from infancy through adulthood. Babies under one year old average about 129 bpm, which can sound alarmingly fast if you’re not expecting it. A resting pulse that consistently hovers near 90 or 100, on the other hand, may not trigger a diagnosis but could be worth paying attention to. Chronic stress, poor sleep, dehydration, and low fitness levels all push resting heart rate upward. Tracking your pulse over weeks gives you a personal baseline that’s far more useful than any single measurement.
When a Pulse Is Too Slow or Too Fast
Clinically, a heart rate below 50 bpm is considered bradycardia. (Some older references use 60 as the cutoff, but most cardiologists now consider rates between 50 and 60 normal in many people.) Bradycardia only becomes a problem when it causes symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or fainting. Athletes and people who are very physically active often sit below 60 bpm with no issues at all.
On the fast side, a resting pulse consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. Temporary spikes from exercise, anxiety, or caffeine don’t count. What Affects Your Reading
Caffeine is one of the most common culprits behind a higher-than-expected pulse. Chronic consumption above 400 mg per day (roughly four standard cups of coffee) can raise both heart rate and blood pressure in a way that persists even after you’ve been sitting quietly. People who drink more than 600 mg daily show even more pronounced effects. If your pulse seems high and you drink a lot of coffee, tea, or energy drinks, that’s the first variable to examine.
Beyond caffeine, several other factors can shift your reading in either direction. Dehydration forces the heart to beat faster to maintain blood pressure. Stress and anxiety activate the same fight-or-flight response that exercise does. Certain medications, particularly decongestants, asthma inhalers, and thyroid drugs, can raise heart rate, while beta-blockers and some blood pressure medications lower it. Even body position matters: your pulse is typically a few beats faster when standing than when sitting or lying down. Temperature plays a role too, with hot weather or fever pushing the rate up.
How to Measure Your Pulse Accurately
Sit down and rest quietly for a few minutes before checking. The two easiest spots to feel a pulse are your wrist (the radial artery) and the side of your neck (the carotid artery). For the wrist, turn your palm face up and place the tips of your index and middle fingers between the wrist bone and the tendon on the thumb side. Press lightly. Pushing too hard can actually block blood flow and make the pulse harder to detect.

A common shortcut is counting for 15 seconds and multiplying by four, but the full minute gives a more accurate result, especially if your rhythm is slightly irregular. For the most consistent readings, check at the same time each day. First thing in the morning, before coffee or getting out of bed, tends to give the truest baseline. Target Pulse During Exercise
Your resting rate tells you about your heart’s efficiency at baseline, but your pulse during exercise tells you about workout intensity. To figure out your personal zones, start by estimating your maximum heart rate: subtract your age multiplied by 0.7 from 208. For a 40-year-old, that works out to 208 minus 28, giving a maximum of about 180 bpm.
From there, moderate exercise (a brisk walk, easy cycling) should put you at 50% to 70% of your max. Vigorous exercise (running, intense swimming) lands between 70% and 85%. For that same 40-year-old, moderate intensity means roughly 90 to 126 bpm, and vigorous means 126 to 153 bpm. Staying in these zones helps you get cardiovascular benefits without overexerting yourself, and checking your pulse mid-workout is a simple way to gauge whether you’re pushing hard enough or need to ease up.
