A good resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), with lower numbers generally indicating better cardiovascular fitness. Athletes and highly active people often have resting rates as low as 40 bpm because their hearts pump more efficiently with each beat.
Normal Ranges by Age
Heart rate norms shift dramatically from birth through adulthood. Newborns have the fastest resting rates, ranging from 100 to 205 bpm in the first four weeks of life. As children grow, their hearts become more efficient and the rate gradually drops: toddlers typically fall between 98 and 140 bpm, school-age children between 75 and 118 bpm, and adolescents settle into the adult range of 60 to 100 bpm.
For adults 18 and older, that 60 to 100 bpm window holds regardless of age. But within that range, lower is generally better. It signals that your heart muscle is strong enough to move adequate blood with fewer contractions. People who exercise regularly tend to cluster in the 50s and 60s. Elite endurance athletes sometimes sit in the low 40s, which is perfectly healthy for them.
Why Lower Is Generally Better
A consistently elevated resting heart rate is linked to higher cardiovascular risk over time. In one large study of men under 65, those with resting rates above 92 bpm had roughly four times the rate of premature death (24 per 1,000) compared to those with rates between 30 and 67 bpm (6 per 1,000). Separate research on nearly 10,000 patients with high blood pressure confirmed the pattern: higher resting heart rates correlated with more heart attacks, strokes, and other major cardiovascular events.
This doesn’t mean a rate of 85 bpm is dangerous on its own. But if your resting heart rate has been creeping upward over months or years, it’s worth paying attention to the factors driving it.
What Affects Your Resting Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It responds to what’s happening in your body on any given day, and several factors can push it higher or lower.
Fitness level is the biggest modifiable factor. Regular aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle so it pumps more blood per beat, allowing it to slow down at rest. Even moderate activity like brisk walking can lower your rate over weeks to months.
Caffeine has a measurable impact, especially at higher doses. Consuming around 400 mg daily (roughly four cups of coffee) over a prolonged period can raise both heart rate and blood pressure by affecting the nervous system that controls heart rhythm. People who consume more than 600 mg daily show even more pronounced elevations that persist even after resting.
Stress and sleep play major roles. Chronic stress keeps your body in a heightened state that drives heart rate up. Poor sleep does the same. Dehydration, illness, and fever all temporarily increase your rate as well.
Medications can shift your rate in either direction. Blood pressure medications like beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers are specifically designed to slow the heart. Certain antidepressants can also lower heart rate. On the other hand, stimulant medications, decongestants, and some asthma drugs tend to raise it. If you’re on any medication and notice a change in your resting rate, that’s worth discussing with your prescriber rather than assuming something is wrong.
Your Heart Rate Changes Throughout the Day
There’s a natural day-night rhythm to heart rate. It’s fastest during waking hours when you’re upright and active, and slowest during deep sleep, sometimes dipping well below your normal resting number. This is completely normal. It’s driven by the same internal clock that regulates your sleep cycle, body temperature, and hormone release.
Because of these fluctuations, when you measure matters. The most reliable reading comes first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed, have coffee, or check your phone.
How to Measure It Accurately
You don’t need a device to check your resting heart rate, though wearables can make tracking easier over time. To measure manually, place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist just below the thumb, or on the side of your neck next to the windpipe. Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by four. For a slightly more accurate count, go for 30 seconds and multiply by two.
The key is being truly at rest: awake, calm, and sitting or lying still. If you’ve just climbed stairs, had an espresso, or gotten into an argument, wait at least five minutes before checking. For the most consistent baseline, measure at the same time each day for a week and average the results.
Signs Your Heart Rate Needs Attention
A resting heart rate that consistently stays above 100 bpm is called tachycardia, and one that stays below 60 bpm without an obvious explanation (like athletic fitness) is called bradycardia. Neither is automatically dangerous, but both warrant a conversation with a doctor if they’re new or persistent.
The number itself matters less than what accompanies it. A heart rate change paired with chest pain, fainting, a prolonged feeling that you’re about to pass out, or a rhythm that feels irregular rather than steady are all signals that something beyond normal variation is happening. The same goes for a sudden, unexplained shift in your baseline, say, a jump from the low 60s to the mid-80s over a few weeks with no change in habits or medications.
