A good resting heart rate for most adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), but lower within that range is generally better. Large epidemiological studies have found a continuous increase in cardiovascular risk at heart rates above 60 bpm, which means a resting rate in the 60s or low 70s is a solid target for most people. Well-trained athletes often sit in the 40s or 50s and are perfectly healthy there.
What the Numbers Mean
The 60-to-100 range is the traditional “normal” window, but normal and optimal aren’t the same thing. A resting heart rate of 95 is technically within range, yet research shows that a rate consistently near the upper end carries higher long-term risk for heart disease and overall mortality. A relatively high heart rate has direct effects on the progression of artery plaque buildup, the likelihood of reduced blood flow to the heart, and how well the heart’s main pumping chamber functions over time.
On the low end, rates below 60 bpm aren’t automatically a concern. If you exercise regularly, a rate in the 50s (or even the 40s) simply means your heart has become efficient enough to pump the same volume of blood with fewer beats. A lower resting heart rate usually means the heart doesn’t have to work as hard. The only time a low rate warrants attention is if it comes with dizziness, fainting, or unusual fatigue.
Why Athletes Have Lower Rates
Regular aerobic exercise makes the heart muscle stronger. A stronger heart pushes more blood with each contraction, so it needs fewer contractions per minute to deliver the same amount of oxygen to your body. This is why highly fit athletes can have resting heart rates closer to 40 bpm without any symptoms. It’s one of the clearest physical markers of cardiovascular fitness, and it’s something that improves relatively quickly once you start a consistent exercise routine. Most people who begin regular cardio see their resting rate drop noticeably within a few weeks to a couple of months.
Factors That Raise or Lower Your Rate
Your resting heart rate isn’t fixed. It shifts throughout the day and can change significantly depending on what’s happening in your body and your environment.
Things that push it up include caffeine, nicotine, sugar, stress, depression, and even a common cold or the flu. Smoking is a particularly consistent offender. Certain medications raise heart rate too, including some stimulant medications and certain antidepressants. On the flip side, some blood pressure medications are specifically designed to slow the heart rate down.
Sleep quality, hydration, and body temperature all play a role as well. A night of poor sleep or a period of high stress can bump your resting rate by 5 to 10 bpm or more. This is why a single reading doesn’t tell you much. Tracking your rate over several mornings gives you a much more reliable picture.
How to Measure It Accurately
The best time to check your resting heart rate is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed or have coffee. If that’s not possible, sit quietly for at least five minutes before taking a reading. Avoid measuring within one to two hours after exercise or a stressful event, and wait at least an hour after consuming caffeine.
To take a manual reading, lightly press your index and middle fingers on the inside of your opposite wrist, just below the base of your thumb. You can also press gently on the side of your neck, just below your jawbone. Count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by four. For a more accurate result, repeat this a few times and average the values. Don’t sit or stand in one position for a long period beforehand, as that can skew the reading.
Fitness trackers and smartwatches measure heart rate continuously and can be useful for spotting trends, though they’re not always perfectly accurate on a beat-to-beat basis. The manual method remains reliable and costs nothing.
When Your Rate Is Worth Watching
A resting heart rate consistently above 80 bpm, especially if you’re not under obvious stress or illness, is worth paying attention to. It doesn’t mean something is wrong, but it does suggest your cardiovascular system is working harder than it ideally should be. Improving your fitness level, managing stress, cutting back on caffeine or nicotine, and getting better sleep are all practical ways to bring it down.
A rate that suddenly jumps or drops by 15 to 20 bpm from your baseline without an obvious cause (like starting a new medication or beginning an exercise program) is more noteworthy than any single number. Your personal trend matters more than where you fall on a generic chart. Tracking your resting rate a few times a week gives you an early signal if something in your body is shifting, whether that’s improved fitness, rising stress, or the beginning of an illness.
