But “good” and “normal” aren’t quite the same thing, and where you land in that 40-beat window tells you something meaningful about your heart’s efficiency.

What the Numbers Mean

Your resting heart rate reflects how hard your heart has to work to keep blood circulating when you’re not doing anything physically demanding. A heart that pumps more blood per beat can afford to beat fewer times per minute, which is why a lower resting pulse (within the normal range) is typically a sign of a stronger, more efficient heart.

The average resting heart rate for adult men is about 74 bpm. For adult women, it’s closer to 79 bpm. That difference comes down to heart size: a male heart weighs roughly 25% more than a female heart on average, so it pushes out more blood with each contraction. A smaller heart compensates by beating a little faster to deliver the same volume of blood throughout the body.

Well-trained athletes often sit well below the standard range, sometimes in the 40s or 50s, because regular endurance exercise physically remodels the heart. The left ventricle grows larger and stronger, ejecting more blood per beat. A pulse below 60 bpm in a fit, active person is normal and expected. In someone who doesn’t exercise regularly, a pulse consistently below 60 is worth bringing up with a doctor.

Why a Lower Resting Rate Matters

Resting heart rate isn’t just a fitness metric. It’s a reliable predictor of long-term health outcomes. A large study of nearly 110,000 adults in China found that people with higher resting heart rates had a 58% greater risk of dying from any cause and a 71% greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those with lower resting rates. When a high resting pulse was combined with other cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol, the numbers got dramatically worse: the risk of cardiovascular death jumped more than sevenfold.

This doesn’t mean a resting rate of 85 is a crisis. But it does mean that a consistently elevated pulse, especially one regularly above 90 or 100 bpm, deserves attention. A resting rate that climbs over time can be an early signal that something is shifting in your cardiovascular health, even before other symptoms appear.

How to Measure Accurately

The best time to check your resting pulse is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed or have coffee. Sit or lie still for at least five minutes before measuring. Place two fingers (index and middle) on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb, or on the side of your neck. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two.

Most people see a noticeable drop in resting rate within a few weeks to a few months of regular cardio training. The fitter you become, the lower your resting rate tends to settle.

Other changes help at the margins. Reducing caffeine intake, improving sleep quality, managing chronic stress through practices like deep breathing or meditation, staying well hydrated, and quitting smoking all contribute to a lower, more stable resting pulse. Weight loss, when needed, reduces the baseline workload on the heart and often brings resting rate down as a direct result.

If your resting heart rate is consistently above 100 bpm without an obvious explanation like recent exercise, caffeine, or anxiety, that’s considered tachycardia and warrants a medical evaluation.
