The job outlook is strong. Employment of home health and personal care aides is projected to grow 17 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. An aging population and a growing preference for home-based care over institutional settings are driving that demand.

The term “health assistant” increasingly applies to technology, not just people. But virtual assistants also raise ethical questions about replacing human jobs and losing the personal touch that’s central to caregiving. For now, they’re best understood as a supplement to human health assistants rather than a replacement.
