A healthy fasting blood sugar level is below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L). That single number is the most common benchmark, but “healthy” actually spans several measurements taken at different times of day, each with its own target range. Understanding these ranges helps you interpret lab results, spot early warning signs of prediabetes, and make sense of what your body does with sugar throughout a normal day.
Fasting Blood Sugar
Fasting blood sugar is measured after at least eight hours without eating, typically first thing in the morning. The thresholds break down into three categories:
- Normal: below 100 mg/dL
- Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL
- Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher
A single high reading doesn’t automatically mean diabetes. Doctors typically repeat the test on a separate day to confirm. Stress, illness, poor sleep, and certain medications can all temporarily push fasting glucose above 100 mg/dL without reflecting a lasting problem.
Blood Sugar After Eating
Your blood sugar naturally rises after a meal, peaks somewhere around 30 to 60 minutes later, and then gradually falls. In a healthy person, it typically stays below 140 mg/dL by the two-hour mark. Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data from a large study of people without diabetes shows just how common these spikes are: participants spent about 11% of their day (roughly three hours) with glucose between 140 and 180 mg/dL, and even briefly topped 180 mg/dL for about 15 minutes per day on average. Their mean glucose across the full day was around 115 mg/dL.
These numbers are reassuring if you’ve ever worn a CGM and worried about post-meal spikes. Spending 87% of the day between 70 and 140 mg/dL was typical for healthy people in this study. The occasional bump above 140 after a carb-heavy meal is normal physiology, not a red flag.
The A1C Test
While fasting and post-meal readings capture a snapshot, the A1C test reflects your average blood sugar over the previous two to three months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that has sugar attached to it. The more sugar in your blood over time, the higher the percentage.
- Normal: below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
- Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
A1C is useful because it doesn’t require fasting and isn’t affected by what you ate that morning. Within the prediabetes range, risk isn’t flat. Someone at 6.3% is at considerably higher risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes than someone at 5.8%, so the higher your number within that band, the more urgently lifestyle changes matter.
When Blood Sugar Drops Too Low
Healthy sugar levels have a floor, too. Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL is considered low, a condition called hypoglycemia. Below 54 mg/dL is classified as severely low and can cause confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Low blood sugar is most common in people taking insulin or certain diabetes medications, but it can also happen after prolonged fasting, intense exercise, or heavy alcohol consumption in people without diabetes.
Early symptoms include shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, and irritability. Eating or drinking something with fast-acting carbohydrates, like juice, a few crackers, or glucose tablets, typically brings levels back up within 15 minutes.
Blood Sugar Targets During Pregnancy
Pregnancy tightens the window for what counts as healthy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends these targets for pregnant women with diabetes:
- Fasting: below 95 mg/dL
- One hour after eating: below 140 mg/dL
- Two hours after eating: below 120 mg/dL
- A1C: below 6%
These lower targets exist because high blood sugar during pregnancy increases the risk of complications for both the mother and baby, including high birth weight, preterm delivery, and preeclampsia. Women without a prior diabetes diagnosis are typically screened for gestational diabetes between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy.
What Affects Your Numbers
Blood sugar doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Several everyday factors can shift your readings by 10 to 30 mg/dL or more, even if your metabolic health is fine. Sleep is one of the biggest: a single night of poor sleep can increase insulin resistance the next day, pushing fasting glucose higher than usual. Stress hormones have a similar effect, which is why blood sugar can run high during illness or emotionally intense periods.
Physical activity pulls sugar out of your bloodstream and into your muscles for fuel, so readings tend to drop after exercise. The timing and composition of meals also matter. Meals high in refined carbohydrates cause sharper, taller spikes than meals that include protein, fat, and fiber alongside the carbs. Even the order you eat foods in a meal can blunt the spike: starting with vegetables or protein before eating starches tends to produce a flatter glucose curve.
Caffeine, dehydration, and certain medications (particularly steroids and some blood pressure drugs) can also nudge numbers upward. If you’re tracking your blood sugar at home and see an occasional reading outside the normal range, context matters more than any single number. A pattern of elevated readings across multiple days is far more meaningful than one morning where you slept poorly and tested high.
