A healthy body fat percentage falls in the range of 11–20% for men and 16–30% for women, though the exact number depends on your age, sex, and activity level. There is no single universally agreed-upon standard, but research has established clear ranges where health risks stay low and the body functions well.
General Ranges for Men and Women
Women naturally carry more body fat than men. This is largely because of essential fat, the minimum amount your body needs to support hormone production, protect organs, and maintain basic physiological function. For men, essential fat sits around 3% of total body weight. For women, it’s about 12%, with much of that supporting reproductive function.
Beyond those minimums, body composition research classifies ranges like this:
- Athletic: 5–10% for men, 8–15% for women
- Good: 11–14% for men, 16–23% for women
- Acceptable: 15–20% for men, 24–30% for women
- Overweight: 21–24% for men, 31–36% for women
- Obese: above 24% for men, above 37% for women
A 2025 study using data from a large US national survey of adults ages 18 to 85 defined the thresholds slightly differently: overweight began at 25% for men and 36% for women, while obesity started at 30% for men and 42% for women. These numbers are higher than the athletic and fitness-oriented classifications above, reflecting what’s realistic for the broader population rather than people who train regularly.
How Age Shifts the Numbers
Body fat naturally increases as you get older, even if your weight stays the same. Muscle mass gradually declines, and fat tends to redistribute toward the midsection. This means the “healthy” window shifts upward with each decade. Average healthy ranges for the general population look like this:
- Under 30: 9–15% for men, 14–21% for women
- 30 to 50: 11–17% for men, 15–23% for women
- Over 50: 12–19% for men, 16–25% for women
A 40-year-old man at 16% body fat and a 25-year-old man at 12% can both be in excellent health. Comparing yourself to a single number without accounting for age gives you an incomplete picture.
What Athletes Typically Carry
Athletes tend to be leaner than the general population, but the ideal body fat percentage varies dramatically by sport. Endurance athletes and gymnasts sit at the low end, while athletes in power sports carry more fat without any performance penalty.
Male marathon runners typically fall between 5–11%, while male football linemen range from 15–19%. Female basketball players average 20–27%, whereas female triathletes and bodybuilders stay closer to 10–15%. These numbers reflect the specific demands of each sport. A distance runner benefits from being as light as possible, while a lineman needs mass to absorb and deliver force. There is no single “athlete” body fat percentage.
When Body Fat Gets Too Low
Dropping below essential fat levels is genuinely dangerous. For women, low body fat causes circulating estrogen levels to fall, which can stop menstrual cycles and lead to bone density loss that increases fracture risk later in life. The immune system also takes a hit when fat stores are too low, leaving you more vulnerable to infections and illness.
Men aren’t immune to these risks either. Extremely low body fat can disrupt hormone production, impair immune function, and leave the body without adequate insulation or cushioning for internal organs. Competitive bodybuilders who drop to 5% or below for competitions typically do so only briefly because maintaining those levels is unsustainable and unhealthy.
Where Fat Sits Matters Too
Two people with identical body fat percentages can have very different health profiles depending on where their fat is stored. Visceral fat, the deep fat surrounding your organs in the abdominal cavity, is far more metabolically active and harmful than the fat stored just beneath your skin. Visceral fat should make up only about 10% of your total body fat.
You can get a rough sense of your visceral fat level without any special equipment. A waist measurement above 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men signals increased risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Your waist-to-hip ratio offers another useful check: divide your waist size by your hip measurement. A ratio above 0.85 for women or 0.90 for men indicates abdominal obesity. A simpler rule of thumb is that your waist circumference should be no more than half your height.
How Body Fat Is Measured
The method you use to measure body fat affects how much you should trust the number you get. DEXA scans, which use low-dose X-rays to distinguish between bone, lean tissue, and fat, are considered the clinical gold standard. Their precision error is about 1.5% for fat mass.
Bioelectrical impedance scales, the kind you can buy for home use, send a mild electrical current through your body and estimate fat based on resistance. These are convenient but less accurate, with a standard error of roughly 1.8–2.2% compared to DEXA results. That means if a home scale reads 20%, your true body fat could be anywhere from about 18% to 22%. Hydration, recent meals, and exercise can all skew the reading further.
Tape-measure circumference methods, like those used by the military, carry an even wider margin of error: about 3.5% in either direction. These methods are useful for tracking trends over time but shouldn’t be treated as precise measurements.
Whatever method you choose, consistency matters more than absolute accuracy. Using the same scale at the same time of day under similar conditions gives you a reliable picture of whether your body fat is trending up, down, or holding steady.
Body Fat vs. BMI
BMI divides your weight by your height squared. It’s simple to calculate, which is why it became the default screening tool for obesity in clinical settings and public health research starting in the 1990s. But BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. A muscular person and an overfat person at the same height and weight will have identical BMIs despite very different health profiles.
The medical community is increasingly recognizing this limitation. The Lancet Commission recently redefined obesity as excess adiposity, or body fat, assessed either by direct measurement like a DEXA scan or by combining at least two anthropometric measurements such as BMI plus waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio. This shift reflects a growing understanding that body fat percentage and fat distribution tell you far more about health risk than weight alone. If you’ve been told your BMI is “overweight” but you carry significant muscle mass, a body fat measurement gives you a much clearer picture of where you actually stand.
