For a 5’9″ male, a healthy weight falls between 125 and 168 pounds. This range corresponds to a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5 to 24.9, the standard “normal weight” category used by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. But that 43-pound spread is wide, and the number on the scale only tells part of the story. Where you carry your weight and how much of it is muscle versus fat matter just as much.
BMI Weight Ranges at 5’9″
BMI divides weight into four broad categories. For someone who stands 5’9″, the cutoffs break down like this:
- Underweight (BMI below 18.5): 124 pounds or less
- Normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9): 125 to 168 pounds

Why BMI Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
BMI treats every pound the same, whether it comes from fat or muscle. A 5’9″ man who weighs 185 pounds and lifts weights regularly could land in the “overweight” category while carrying relatively little body fat. Research using detailed body scans (DEXA) shows that fat mass and muscle mass have opposite effects on health. Higher fat mass increases the odds of metabolic and cardiovascular problems, while higher muscle mass lowers them. In one study, the ratio of fat to muscle was a far stronger predictor of disease risk than BMI category alone.
This means two men at the same height and weight can have very different health profiles depending on body composition. If you exercise regularly and carry noticeable muscle, a BMI of 26 or 27 may not signal the same risk it would for someone who is sedentary.
Waist Size as a Better Risk Indicator
Your waist circumference captures something BMI misses: where your body stores fat. Fat that accumulates around the organs in your midsection, often called visceral fat, is more metabolically active and more strongly linked to disease than fat stored under the skin on your arms or legs.
For men, a waist measurement of 40 inches or more signals elevated health risk regardless of overall weight. You can measure this yourself by wrapping a tape measure around your bare abdomen just above your hip bones, at the level of your navel, after exhaling normally.
An even more precise metric is the waist-to-height ratio. You divide your waist measurement in inches by your height in inches. For a 5’9″ man (69 inches), a ratio below 0.5 is generally considered optimal, meaning a waist under about 34.5 inches. Research in younger and middle-aged adults has validated 0.5 to 0.55 as the threshold where cardiovascular risk starts climbing. In older adults, that cutoff may shift slightly higher, closer to 0.6, but for most men a ratio under 0.5 remains a solid target.
Body Fat Percentage Ranges for Men
If you have access to a body composition measurement, whether through a gym’s bioelectrical impedance scale, calipers, or a more accurate DEXA scan, body fat percentage gives you a clearer picture than weight alone. For adult men, a body fat percentage of 25% or higher is generally classified as overweight, and 30% or higher as obese. Most healthy, moderately active men fall somewhere between 15% and 20%. Men who train seriously or compete in athletics often sit in the 10% to 15% range, though single-digit percentages are difficult to sustain and not necessary for good health.
Health Risks Above the Healthy Range
Carrying excess weight, particularly excess body fat, raises the risk of several serious conditions. These include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and many types of cancer. The risk doesn’t flip on like a switch at 203 pounds. It increases gradually as weight climbs, and it increases more steeply when that weight concentrates around the midsection.
A 5’9″ man at 175 pounds with a 36-inch waist and good fitness habits is in a different position than a 5’9″ man at 175 pounds with a 42-inch waist and no exercise routine. The numbers overlap, but the underlying risk does not.
Health Risks Below the Healthy Range
Being significantly underweight carries its own set of problems. For a 5’9″ male, that means weighing 124 pounds or less. At low body weight, complications can include loss of bone mass and muscle mass, a weakened immune system, anemia, and hormonal imbalances that may affect fertility. Day to day, underweight men often experience fatigue, dizziness, thinning hair, and frequent illness with slower recovery times. Left untreated, being chronically underweight is associated with a shortened lifespan.
If your weight sits below 125 pounds and you’re not actively trying to lose weight, nutritional deficiencies or an underlying medical condition could be at play.
Finding Your Personal Target
The 125 to 168 pound BMI range is a useful starting point, but your personal healthy weight depends on several factors: how much muscle you carry, where your body tends to store fat, your activity level, and your metabolic health markers like blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. A practical approach is to combine three simple checks. First, see where your weight falls on the BMI chart. Second, measure your waist and calculate your waist-to-height ratio, aiming for a number under 0.5. Third, if possible, get a body fat percentage reading to distinguish between fat and lean mass.
No single number captures health perfectly. A 5’9″ man who weighs 170 pounds, lifts weights three times a week, has a 33-inch waist, and sees normal results on routine bloodwork is in a very different spot than his BMI category alone would suggest. Use the ranges as guideposts, then look at the fuller picture.
