What Is a High Resting Heart Rate and When to Worry

A resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute is considered high and is clinically called tachycardia. The normal range for adults is 60 to 100 bpm when you’re sitting or lying down, calm, and feeling well. But “high” is relative: a rate in the 80s or 90s, while technically normal, still carries more health risk than a rate in the 60s.

Normal Ranges by Age

The 60-to-100 bpm standard applies to adults and adolescents age 13 and older. Children have naturally faster hearts. Newborns range from 100 to 205 bpm, infants stay between 100 and 180, and toddlers fall between 98 and 140. By school age (5 to 12), the range narrows to 75 to 118 bpm. These numbers apply when a child is awake and at rest; heart rates drop during sleep and rise during activity at every age.

On the other end of the spectrum, very fit adults often have resting rates of 40 to 50 bpm. Their hearts pump more blood per beat because endurance training enlarges the heart’s main pumping chamber, so the heart simply doesn’t need to beat as often to circulate the same volume. A rate of 45 in a trained runner is healthy. The same rate in someone who doesn’t exercise could signal a problem with the heart’s electrical system.

Why Women and Men Differ

Women tend to have a resting heart rate about 6% higher than men, averaging around 79 bpm compared to roughly 74 bpm in men. The reason is structural: women’s hearts are smaller and pump a slightly lower volume of blood per beat. To compensate, the heart beats more frequently to deliver the same amount of oxygen. Women also have stronger baseline activity in the branch of the nervous system that slows the heart, which means their hearts respond differently to stress and recovery than men’s hearts do.

Common Causes of a High Resting Rate

A resting heart rate that’s temporarily elevated often has a straightforward explanation. Caffeine, nicotine, dehydration, poor sleep, and emotional stress all push the rate up. So do certain medications, including some asthma inhalers, decongestants, and stimulant-based drugs prescribed for attention disorders. Illegal stimulants like cocaine and methamphetamine can spike the heart rate dramatically. If your rate returns to normal once the trigger is removed, the elevation is usually not dangerous on its own.

Persistent elevation points to something the body is working harder to compensate for. The most common medical causes include:

  • Anemia: When you don’t have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen efficiently, the heart speeds up to make more deliveries per minute.
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism): Excess thyroid hormone acts like a constant accelerator on the heart.
  • Electrolyte imbalances: Low levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, or magnesium interfere with the electrical signals that keep your heartbeat steady.
  • Heart conditions: Damage from a prior heart attack, heart valve problems, or issues with the heart’s electrical pathways can all produce a chronically fast rate.
  • Fever and infection: The heart rate rises roughly 10 bpm for every degree Fahrenheit of fever as the body fights off illness.

How to Measure Accurately

Your resting heart rate should be measured after you’ve been sitting or lying quietly for at least five minutes. The best time is first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, and before caffeine. Place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of the thumb, and count the beats for a full 60 seconds. Counting for only 15 seconds and multiplying by four works in a pinch, but a full minute gives a more reliable number.

Wearable devices and smartwatches measure resting heart rate continuously and can show trends over days and weeks. A single high reading matters less than a pattern. If your resting rate has been climbing steadily over several weeks without an obvious explanation like reduced activity or increased stress, that trend is worth paying attention to.

Long-Term Health Risks

A chronically elevated resting heart rate is not just a number on a screen. It’s an independent predictor of shorter lifespan, even after accounting for fitness level, physical activity, and other cardiovascular risk factors. A large study following men for 16 years found that the risk of dying from any cause increased by about 16% for every additional 10 bpm in resting heart rate. Men with rates above 90 bpm had roughly three times the mortality risk compared to those with rates at or below 50 bpm.

The mechanism behind this is partly mechanical. A faster heart rate means the heart works harder around the clock, increasing the demand for oxygen and stiffening artery walls over time. This promotes the buildup of fatty plaques in blood vessels and may make existing plaques more likely to rupture, which is how heart attacks begin. Smokers face an even steeper penalty: their mortality risk climbed 20% per 10 bpm increase, compared to 14% in nonsmokers.

Symptoms That Need Immediate Attention

A fast heart rate by itself can feel like fluttering, pounding, or a racing sensation in the chest. Many people also notice it in their neck or throat. These palpitations can be uncomfortable but are not always dangerous. What changes the picture is when a racing heart comes with dizziness, chest pain, or severe shortness of breath. That combination can indicate the heart isn’t pumping blood effectively, and it warrants emergency care.

Fainting or near-fainting during a fast heart rate episode is another red flag. So is a heart rate that jumps well above 100 bpm with no physical trigger and doesn’t come down within a few minutes of resting.

What You Can Do to Lower It

If your resting heart rate sits in the 80s or 90s and you’re otherwise healthy, the most effective tool is regular aerobic exercise. Even moderate activity like brisk walking for 30 minutes most days of the week can lower resting heart rate by several beats per minute within a few weeks. The heart adapts by becoming a stronger pump, so it needs fewer contractions to move the same amount of blood.

Cutting back on caffeine, quitting nicotine, staying well hydrated, and managing chronic stress all contribute. Sleep quality matters too: people who consistently get less than six hours tend to have higher resting rates. These changes won’t fix an underlying medical cause like thyroid disease or anemia, but they remove the lifestyle factors that stack on top of it. If your rate stays above 100 despite these adjustments, the next step is blood work to check thyroid function, red blood cell counts, and electrolyte levels.
