A lash egg is not actually an egg. It’s a mass of pus, tissue, and sometimes egg material that a hen’s body produces in response to an infected oviduct, the tube where eggs are normally formed. Finding one in your nesting box is a sign that the hen who laid it has a condition called salpingitis, and it usually means the infection has been building for some time.
What’s Actually Inside a Lash Egg
A lash egg can look like a misshapen, rubbery egg from the outside, which is why many chicken keepers don’t immediately realize something is wrong. The color ranges from yellowish to grayish-brown, and the texture is often waxy or cheese-like. If you cut one open, you’ll typically find distinct layers, almost like an onion.
Those layers are made up of caseous exudate, which is essentially thick, cheese-textured pus that has escaped from inflamed blood vessels and built up on the tissue surfaces inside the oviduct. Mixed into that pus you may find yolk, egg white, bits of shell or shell membrane, blood, and even pieces of tissue from the oviduct wall itself. The smell is distinctly foul. Each layer represents a separate wave of the hen’s immune response trying to wall off the infection, which is why the mass grows in concentric rings over days or weeks before eventually being pushed out through the vent.
The Infection Behind It
Salpingitis, the inflammation of the oviduct, is one of the most common reproductive problems in both backyard and commercial laying hens. The infection is almost always bacterial. E. coli is the most frequent culprit, but Salmonella, Mycoplasma, and several other bacteria can be responsible. These pathogens typically enter through the vent (the opening where eggs exit) and travel up into the reproductive tract, though they can also spread from a respiratory infection through the bloodstream.
Once bacteria colonize the oviduct, the lining becomes inflamed and starts producing the protein-rich fluid that hardens into those characteristic cheesy layers. Normal egg formation gets disrupted or stops entirely. The oviduct may continue trying to coat the growing mass in the same secretions it would normally use to build an egg, which is why lash eggs sometimes have a thin, partial shell on the outside.
Signs Your Hen May Be Affected
A lash egg is often the first visible clue, but the infection typically starts well before one appears. Hens with salpingitis commonly show a drop or complete stop in egg production. You might notice lethargy, reduced appetite, and less activity than usual. As the infection progresses and fluid or material accumulates internally, the hen’s abdomen can become visibly swollen and feel hard to the touch.
In more advanced cases, hens develop what’s sometimes called a “penguin stance,” standing very upright with their swollen belly pushing their legs apart. A hen in this posture is carrying significant internal buildup. As the belly grows larger, she may struggle to breathe properly and have difficulty reaching food and water. One subtle early sign: a hen with a bright red comb (indicating she’s hormonally in lay) who suddenly stops producing eggs is worth watching closely.
What Happens After a Hen Passes One
The prognosis varies enormously from hen to hen, and no reliable survival statistics exist. Some hens pass a single lash egg and recover without intervention. Others produce them repeatedly over months or even years. Backyard chicken keepers report the full range of outcomes: hens that lived normally for years after their first lash egg, and hens that died within days of passing one.
The key factor is how deeply the infection has taken hold. A mild, localized infection in the oviduct may clear on its own or with treatment. But if bacteria have spread beyond the oviduct into the abdominal cavity, the hen can develop egg yolk peritonitis, a much more serious and often fatal condition where yolk material and infection accumulate in the abdomen with no way out. This is typically what kills hens with advanced salpingitis.
Veterinary treatment usually involves antibiotics, with amoxicillin being one of the more commonly used options. However, long-term success rates are modest. Treatment may buy time and improve comfort, but a chronically damaged oviduct rarely returns to full normal function. Many hens that survive salpingitis never lay normal eggs again, or lay only sporadically.
Should You Eat Eggs From the Same Hen?
A lash egg itself is absolutely not edible. It’s a mass of infection byproduct. As for normal-looking eggs laid by the same hen before or after the episode, the concern is that bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella are actively present in her reproductive tract. Most chicken keepers err on the side of discarding any eggs from a hen known to have salpingitis, particularly if she’s being treated with antibiotics (which have withdrawal periods during which eggs shouldn’t be consumed). Eggs from your other, healthy hens in the same flock remain fine to eat.
Reducing the Risk in Your Flock
Because the bacteria responsible for salpingitis are common environmental organisms, prevention centers on keeping bacterial loads low and your hens’ immune systems strong. Clean, dry bedding in nesting boxes matters more than almost anything else. Hens sit in those boxes for extended periods with their vents in direct contact with whatever is beneath them, so soiled or damp nesting material is a direct route for bacteria to enter the reproductive tract.
Good general biosecurity practices make a real difference. The USDA recommends washing your hands with soap and water before and after handling your birds, providing clean footwear or disposable boot covers for anyone entering the coop area, and cleaning tools and equipment before moving them between different areas. Limit contact between your flock and outside visitors, including other chicken keepers whose birds could carry different pathogens. Keep wild bird access to your coop and feed areas to a minimum.
Overcrowding and stress suppress immune function and increase the bacterial load in shared spaces, so giving your hens adequate room is both a welfare and a health measure. Fresh, clean water is critical. Waterers that collect droppings or algae are a bacterial reservoir. Nipple-style waterers or frequently refreshed open containers help keep exposure low.
Respiratory infections can seed bacteria into the oviduct through the bloodstream, so addressing any signs of sneezing, nasal discharge, or labored breathing promptly helps protect the reproductive tract as well. Hens that have been bred for extremely high egg production tend to be more susceptible to reproductive disorders, so if salpingitis becomes a recurring problem in your flock, the genetics of your birds may be a contributing factor.
