What Is a Normal Blood Alcohol Level and Is It Safe?

Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) measures the percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream, and any amount above zero means alcohol is present and actively affecting your body. There is no “healthy” or “safe” elevated BAC. The number that most people associate with a threshold, 0.08%, is simply the legal limit for driving in most U.S. states, not a medical safety benchmark.

What BAC Numbers Actually Mean

BAC is expressed as a percentage of alcohol by weight in your blood. A BAC of 0.08% means there are 0.08 grams of alcohol for every 100 milliliters of blood. That sounds tiny, but even small concentrations have measurable effects on your brain and body.

Here’s what happens at each level:

  • 0.02%: Slight mood changes, mild relaxation, and a small dip in judgment. Most people feel “a little buzzed” but wouldn’t consider themselves impaired.
  • 0.05%: Lowered alertness, reduced inhibitions, and noticeably impaired judgment. This is the legal driving limit in Utah.
  • 0.08%: Reduced muscle coordination, difficulty detecting danger, and impaired reasoning. This is the legal limit for driving in 49 U.S. states.
  • 0.10%: Slurred speech, slowed thinking, and delayed reaction time.
  • 0.15%: Nausea, vomiting, loss of balance, and significant loss of muscle control. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism considers reaching 0.08% in a single session to be binge drinking, so 0.15% is well past that threshold.
  • 0.15% to 0.30%: Confusion, drowsiness, and repeated vomiting. Risk of choking on vomit becomes a serious concern.
  • 0.30% to 0.40%: Loss of consciousness and alcohol poisoning, which is a life-threatening emergency.

BAC levels above 0.30% can suppress breathing and heart function enough to cause death. The risk climbs steeply from there, and people with no tolerance to alcohol can face fatal outcomes at the lower end of that range.

The Legal Limit Is Not a Safety Line

Every U.S. state except Utah sets the legal driving limit at 0.08%. Utah lowered its threshold to 0.05% in 2018. Commercial drivers typically face a stricter limit of 0.04%, and drivers under 21 are held to zero-tolerance laws in most states, meaning any detectable BAC is illegal.

These numbers exist for traffic safety, not health. Measurable impairment in coordination and judgment begins well below 0.08%. At 0.05%, your alertness is already reduced enough to increase crash risk. The legal limit represents a policy compromise, not the point at which alcohol starts affecting your ability to drive.

Why the Same Drinks Hit People Differently

Two people can drink the same amount of alcohol and end up with very different BAC levels. The biggest factors are body weight, body composition, and biological sex.

Your body’s water content is the key variable. Alcohol distributes through water in your body, so a person with more body water dilutes the same amount of alcohol into a larger volume, producing a lower BAC. Men generally have a higher percentage of body water than women, which is one reason women typically reach higher blood alcohol levels after consuming the same number of drinks. Women also absorb more alcohol and take longer to process it, according to the CDC.

Other factors that shift your BAC include how quickly you drank, whether you ate beforehand (food slows absorption), medications that affect liver enzymes, and your individual genetics. Age also plays a role: older adults tend to reach higher BAC levels from the same amount of alcohol because body water decreases with age.

How Fast Your Body Clears Alcohol

Your liver eliminates alcohol at a roughly fixed rate regardless of how much you’ve had. The average person clears between 0.010% and 0.020% BAC per hour. That means if your BAC hits 0.10%, it will take anywhere from 5 to 10 hours to return to 0.00%.

Nothing speeds this up. Coffee, cold showers, food, and water can help you feel more alert, but they don’t change how fast your liver processes alcohol. The only variable that matters is time. This is worth keeping in mind if you drink in the evening: a BAC of 0.08% at midnight may still leave you above zero when you wake up at 6 a.m.

Breath Tests vs. Blood Tests

Breathalyzers estimate BAC by measuring alcohol in exhaled air and converting it to an equivalent blood level. They’re convenient, but they’re estimates. A study comparing breathalyzer readings to actual blood draws found a correlation of 0.983, which is high, with a sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 93%. In practical terms, a breathalyzer is very good at detecting whether you’ve been drinking and approximately how much, but a blood test remains the most accurate measurement. In legal or medical settings, blood draws are the standard when precision matters.

No Amount Is Risk-Free

The World Health Organization published a clear position in 2023: there is no level of alcohol consumption that can be considered safe for health. The risk of harm, particularly cancer, begins with the first drink and increases with every additional one. Current evidence shows no threshold below which alcohol’s cancer-promoting effects simply switch off.

This doesn’t mean a single glass of wine is equivalent to heavy drinking. The dose still matters enormously for immediate and long-term risk. But if you’re looking for a BAC that carries zero health consequences, the answer is the same number you started with: 0.00%.
