That single number is the one most people encounter at a routine checkup, but blood sugar doesn’t stay fixed. It rises after meals, dips overnight, and shifts depending on your age, whether you’re pregnant, and how your body processes insulin. Understanding what’s normal in each of those situations gives you a much clearer picture of your metabolic health.

Normal Fasting Blood Glucose

Fasting blood glucose is measured after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours, usually first thing in the morning. For adults without diabetes, a normal result falls between 70 and 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L).

Once fasting glucose reaches 100 to 125 mg/dL, it falls into the prediabetes range.
