A normal fasting blood sugar reading is below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L), measured after at least eight hours without eating. That single number is the most widely used benchmark, but “normal” shifts depending on when you last ate, whether you’re pregnant, and what type of test you’re looking at. Here’s how to interpret each one.
Normal Fasting Blood Sugar
Fasting blood sugar is the standard screening test. You fast overnight, then have blood drawn in the morning. The result falls into one of three categories:
- Normal: below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)
- Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L)
- Diabetes: 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests
A single reading of 126 or above isn’t enough for a diabetes diagnosis on its own. The test needs to be repeated on a different day to confirm the result. Prediabetes, sometimes called impaired fasting glucose, means your body is starting to have trouble processing sugar but hasn’t crossed into diabetes territory yet.
Blood Sugar After Eating
Your blood sugar naturally rises after a meal and then gradually comes back down as insulin moves glucose into your cells. The standard check happens two hours after eating. For someone without diabetes, a normal two-hour postprandial reading is below 140 mg/dL. A result between 140 and 199 mg/dL suggests prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or higher points toward diabetes.
In practice, blood sugar in a healthy person typically peaks around 30 to 60 minutes after the first bite and returns close to baseline within two to three hours. The size and composition of the meal matters: a plate of white rice will spike your glucose faster and higher than a meal with protein, fat, and fiber slowing digestion.
A1c: Your Three-Month Average
While fasting and post-meal tests capture a single moment, the A1c test reflects your average blood sugar over the previous two to three months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that has glucose attached to it. The more sugar circulating in your blood over time, the higher the percentage.
- Normal: below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
- Diabetes: 6.5% or above
An A1c of 5.7% corresponds roughly to an average blood sugar of about 117 mg/dL. Because it smooths out daily swings, the A1c is often considered a more reliable picture of long-term blood sugar control than any single fasting test. Some conditions that affect red blood cells, like anemia or recent blood loss, can skew the result, so your provider may rely on other tests if those apply to you.
Blood Sugar During Pregnancy
Pregnancy changes how your body handles insulin, so the screening process and thresholds are different. Between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, most women receive a glucose challenge test: you drink a sugary solution without fasting beforehand, and your blood is drawn one hour later. If your result hits 130 to 140 mg/dL or higher (the exact cutoff varies by practice), you move on to a longer oral glucose tolerance test to confirm or rule out gestational diabetes.
Screening before 24 weeks isn’t routinely recommended for most women because there isn’t strong evidence that earlier testing improves outcomes. If you have risk factors like obesity, a family history of diabetes, or a previous pregnancy with gestational diabetes, your provider may test sooner.
Home Meters vs. Lab Tests
If you’re checking your blood sugar at home with a finger-prick meter, your readings may not match a lab result drawn the same morning. Most home meters are calibrated to report plasma-equivalent values, but the measurement process itself introduces a margin of error. Home glucose meters are allowed to be within about 15% of the true value, which means a lab result of 100 mg/dL could show up as anywhere from 85 to 115 on your meter.
There’s also a technical difference between how labs and meters handle your blood sample. Labs measure glucose in plasma (the liquid part of blood), while the actual finger-prick captures whole blood, which includes red blood cells. Plasma readings run about 10 to 15% higher than whole blood readings from the same sample. Modern meters automatically convert to plasma-equivalent numbers using a standard factor of 1.11, but variations in your red blood cell concentration can nudge that conversion slightly off. If your home readings consistently look different from lab results, the meter’s accuracy is the most likely explanation, not a change in your health.
Targets for People Managing Diabetes
If you’ve already been diagnosed with diabetes, the definition of “normal” shifts to target ranges that balance good control against the risk of blood sugar dropping too low. The CDC lists these typical targets for most adults with diabetes:
- Before a meal: 80 to 130 mg/dL
- Two hours after the start of a meal: below 180 mg/dL
These targets are looser than the numbers for someone without diabetes, and intentionally so. Pushing blood sugar too aggressively toward non-diabetic levels can increase the risk of hypoglycemia, where blood sugar drops low enough to cause shakiness, confusion, or fainting. Your specific targets may be tighter or more relaxed depending on your age, how long you’ve had diabetes, what medications you take, and whether you have other health conditions. Older adults or those prone to low blood sugar episodes often have more lenient goals.
What Affects Your Reading
Blood sugar isn’t static. It fluctuates throughout the day in response to food, activity, stress, illness, and sleep quality. Even in a perfectly healthy person, glucose dips into the 70s during sleep and can briefly touch 140 or higher after a carb-heavy meal. A single reading outside the “normal” range doesn’t necessarily signal a problem.
Stress hormones raise blood sugar independently of food. A bad night of sleep, a stressful workday, or coming down with a cold can all push your fasting number higher than usual. Caffeine has a mild effect in some people. Intense exercise can temporarily raise blood sugar (your liver releases stored glucose to fuel your muscles) before lowering it over the following hours. Dehydration concentrates your blood and can make a reading appear slightly elevated.
If you’re testing at home, technique matters too. Residue on your fingers from food or lotion can contaminate the sample. Squeezing the fingertip too hard dilutes the blood drop with tissue fluid, which can lower the reading. Washing your hands with soap and water before testing gives the most reliable result.
