Normal estradiol levels for women range widely depending on age, menstrual cycle phase, and whether you’re pregnant or postmenopausal. During reproductive years, levels can swing from as low as 30 pg/mL early in your cycle to over 400 pg/mL around ovulation, then drop again. After menopause, levels typically fall below 30 pg/mL. Understanding where you fall within these ranges helps make sense of fertility tests, hormone panels, and symptoms you might be experiencing.
Estradiol Levels During the Menstrual Cycle
Estradiol is the most potent form of estrogen your body produces, and its levels shift dramatically throughout your monthly cycle. These fluctuations are not random. They reflect what your ovaries are doing at each stage.
During the follicular phase (the first half of your cycle, starting from your period), estradiol starts low, generally between 30 and 100 pg/mL. As your ovaries prepare to release an egg, estradiol climbs steadily because the developing follicle produces more and more of it.
At ovulation, estradiol peaks. Levels typically reach 100 to 400 pg/mL, sometimes higher. This surge is what triggers your brain to release the hormones that cause the egg to be released.
During the luteal phase (the second half of your cycle, after ovulation), estradiol drops and then rises moderately again, usually settling between 50 and 200 pg/mL. If pregnancy doesn’t occur, levels fall as your period approaches.
Because of these natural swings, a single estradiol reading only makes sense when your doctor knows where you are in your cycle. A value of 60 pg/mL could be perfectly normal on day 3 or concerning at mid-cycle.
The Day 3 Test and Fertility
If you’re being evaluated for fertility, you’ll likely have your estradiol drawn on day 3 of your cycle (or between days 2 and 4). At this point, a healthy result is generally below about 80 pg/mL. The goal is to see both estradiol and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) at low levels early in the cycle.
Here’s why this matters: if your day 3 estradiol is elevated, it can artificially push your FSH reading down into the normal range, masking a potential problem with ovarian reserve (your remaining egg supply). In other words, a “normal” FSH result paired with a high estradiol can be misleading. Fertility specialists look at both numbers together to get an accurate picture of how your ovaries are responding.
Estradiol Levels During Pregnancy
Pregnancy sends estradiol levels far beyond anything you’d see during a normal cycle. The placenta becomes a major source of estrogen production, and levels climb steadily across all three trimesters.
- First trimester: roughly 150 to 3,200 pg/mL
- Second trimester: roughly 1,300 to 21,000 pg/mL
- Third trimester: roughly 6,000 to over 30,000 pg/mL
These ranges vary significantly between labs and testing methods, so the specific numbers on your lab report may look different. The overall pattern, a steep and continuous rise, is what matters most. Your provider will compare your results to the reference range printed on your particular lab report rather than to a universal chart.
Estradiol After Menopause
Once your ovaries stop releasing eggs and menstrual cycles end, estradiol production drops sharply. Postmenopausal estradiol levels typically fall below 30 pg/mL, and many women have levels under 10 pg/mL. This decline is permanent and reflects the natural winding down of ovarian function.
During perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause), estradiol levels become erratic. You might have a cycle with unusually high levels followed by one with very low levels. This hormonal instability is what drives many perimenopausal symptoms like hot flashes, irregular periods, and sleep disruption. There’s no single “normal” number during this transition because the hallmark of perimenopause is unpredictability.
What Low Estradiol Means for Your Health
Chronically low estradiol, whether from menopause, certain medical conditions, or very low body weight, carries real health consequences over time. Estradiol plays a protective role in several body systems, and when it’s consistently low, those protections weaken.
The most significant risks include weakened bones (osteoporosis), which raises the chance of fractures, and an increased risk of heart disease. Low estradiol also contributes to vaginal dryness and painful sex, mood changes including depression, and difficulty with sleep. These aren’t just discomforts. Bone loss in particular progresses silently and can become severe before you notice symptoms.
Hormone replacement therapy is the primary treatment when low estradiol is causing problems, especially during and after menopause. It helps preserve bone density, relieve vaginal symptoms, and manage hot flashes.
What High Estradiol Means for Your Health
Elevated estradiol can occur when your body overproduces it, when medications (like hormone therapy or birth control) push levels too high, or when your body has trouble breaking estrogen down and clearing it out. Environmental chemicals called xenoestrogens, found in certain plastics, pesticides, and personal care products, can also mimic estrogen in your body.
Symptoms of high estradiol include breast swelling and tenderness, weight gain concentrated around the waist and hips, heavy or irregular periods, fatigue, mood swings, and worsening PMS. You might also notice decreased sex drive or feel more anxious or depressed than usual.

Estradiol is measured in picograms per milliliter (pg/mL) in the United States and in picomoles per liter (pmol/L) in many other countries. To convert between the two, multiply pg/mL by 3.676 to get pmol/L. So a reading of 50 pg/mL equals about 184 pmol/L.
Every lab prints its own reference range on your results, and these can differ based on the testing method used. Always compare your number to the range listed on your specific report rather than to numbers you find online. A value flagged as “high” at one lab might fall within the normal range at another.
Certain medications can also skew your results. Hormonal birth control, hormone replacement therapy, and some cancer treatments can raise or lower estradiol readings. If you’re on any of these, your provider will factor that in when interpreting the results. Timing matters too: because estradiol fluctuates so much during the menstrual cycle, a result that looks abnormal may simply reflect the phase you were in when blood was drawn.
