A normal fasting blood sugar is 99 mg/dL or below. This reading is taken after at least 8 hours without eating, typically first thing in the morning. Once fasting blood sugar reaches 100 mg/dL, it enters prediabetes territory, and 126 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.
The Three Fasting Blood Sugar Ranges

Why Your Body Has Blood Sugar While Fasting
You might wonder why blood sugar registers at all when you haven’t eaten in hours. The answer is your liver. While you sleep, your liver steadily releases stored glucose into your bloodstream to keep your brain, muscles, and organs fueled. It does this first by breaking down glycogen, a starchy storage molecule packed into liver cells after meals.
As the overnight fast stretches on and glycogen stores thin out, the liver shifts to building fresh glucose from scratch using amino acids, lactate, and other raw materials. This process keeps blood sugar remarkably stable in a healthy person, hovering between roughly 70 and 99 mg/dL through the night. Insulin acts as the brake pedal, signaling the liver to slow glucose output when levels are adequate. When the body stops responding well to insulin, the liver keeps producing glucose even when it shouldn’t, and fasting numbers creep up.
How the Test Works
A fasting blood sugar test requires 8 to 12 hours without food or caloric drinks. For most people, this means skipping breakfast and heading to the lab first thing in the morning. You can drink plain water during the fast, and staying hydrated is actually encouraged since dehydration concentrates your blood sugar and can nudge results higher.
Coffee, juice, soda, and flavored water are all off limits, even if they contain no calories. Some people’s blood sugar is sensitive to caffeine alone, and artificial sweeteners may also affect results. Even flavored sparkling water can contain sugars or sweeteners that interfere with the reading.
Factors That Can Raise Your Numbers
A fasting blood sugar reading is a snapshot, and several things besides diet can push it higher on any given morning.
Poor sleep is one of the most underappreciated factors. Even a single night of inadequate rest makes your body use insulin less efficiently, which can raise the next morning’s reading. Stress works through a similar pathway: stress hormones signal the liver to release more glucose. Physical pain, including something as seemingly unrelated as a sunburn, triggers the same stress response.
There’s also a phenomenon called the “dawn effect.” In the early morning hours, your body releases a surge of hormones (cortisol, growth hormone, and others) that naturally raise blood sugar to prepare you for waking. Everyone experiences this to some degree, but in people with insulin resistance or diabetes, the spike can be more pronounced and harder for the body to rein in.
Dehydration matters more than most people realize. Less water in your bloodstream means the same amount of glucose is dissolved in less fluid, producing a higher concentration on the test. Certain medications can also affect results. Some nasal decongestant sprays contain chemicals that prompt the liver to release extra glucose. If you take steroids, certain blood pressure medications, or antipsychotics, these can influence fasting numbers as well.
Pregnancy Targets Are Lower
During pregnancy, the threshold for concern drops significantly. The American Diabetes Association recommends a fasting glucose target of 70 to 95 mg/dL for pregnant women. A reading of 96 mg/dL, perfectly normal outside of pregnancy, could flag a concern during it. This tighter range exists because even mildly elevated blood sugar poses real risks to fetal development, including excessive birth weight and complications during delivery.
Screening for gestational diabetes typically happens between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy, though women with risk factors may be tested earlier.
What a Borderline Result Means
If your fasting blood sugar comes back between 100 and 125 mg/dL, you’re in the prediabetes range. This doesn’t mean diabetes is inevitable. It means your body’s ability to manage glucose is strained but not yet broken. At this stage, lifestyle changes are genuinely effective. Losing 5 to 7 percent of body weight (about 10 to 14 pounds for someone who weighs 200) and getting 150 minutes of moderate activity per week has been shown to cut the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes by more than half.
Your doctor will likely also order a hemoglobin A1C test, which reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months rather than a single moment. This gives a fuller picture since fasting glucose can fluctuate from day to day based on sleep, stress, and hydration.
How Often to Test
For adults with no risk factors, screening typically begins at age 35 and repeats every three years if results are normal. If you have risk factors like a family history of diabetes, a BMI over 25, or a history of gestational diabetes, screening may start earlier and happen more frequently. A fasting blood sugar in the prediabetes range usually means annual retesting to track whether numbers are stable, improving, or trending upward.
