A regular resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That’s your heart rate when you’re sitting or lying down, awake, calm, and not moving. Where you land within that range depends on your fitness level, age, sex, and a handful of everyday factors like caffeine, stress, and hydration.
What Counts as a Normal Range
The 60 to 100 bpm window is the standard used by the American Heart Association and most medical guidelines. But “normal” doesn’t mean every number in that range is equally common. The average resting heart rate for adult men is about 74 bpm, while for adult women it’s about 79 bpm. That difference comes down to heart size: a male heart weighs roughly 25% more than a female heart on average, so it pumps more blood per beat. A smaller heart compensates by beating a little faster to keep the same volume of blood moving through the body.
If you’re very physically fit, your resting heart rate can sit well below 60 bpm without any cause for concern. Endurance athletes and highly active people commonly have resting rates in the 40 to 50 bpm range. Their hearts are stronger and more efficient, pushing more blood with each contraction, so fewer beats are needed per minute to do the same job.
Heart Rate During Sleep
Your heart rate doesn’t stay constant throughout the day. During sleep, it typically drops 20% to 30% below your daytime resting rate. For most healthy adults, that means a sleeping heart rate somewhere between 50 and 75 bpm. This dip is normal and reflects your body shifting into a lower state of energy demand. If you use a fitness tracker or smartwatch and notice your overnight heart rate is lower than your usual waking number, that’s exactly what should happen.
Normal Heart Rates for Children
Children’s hearts beat significantly faster than adults’, especially in infancy. The younger the child, the higher the normal range:
- Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm while awake, 80 to 160 bpm while sleeping
- 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm awake, 75 to 160 bpm sleeping
- 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm awake, 60 to 90 bpm sleeping
- Over 10 years: 60 to 100 bpm awake, 50 to 90 bpm sleeping
By around age 10, a child’s heart rate range aligns with the adult standard. The high rates in babies reflect tiny hearts working hard to supply a rapidly growing body.
When Heart Rate Is Too High or Too Low
A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. It can feel like your heart is racing, pounding, or fluttering even when you’re not exerting yourself. Common triggers include anxiety, fever, dehydration, too much caffeine, and certain medications. In some cases it points to a heart rhythm problem that needs evaluation.
A resting heart rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. For athletes and fit individuals, this is perfectly healthy. But if you’re not particularly active and your heart rate regularly sits below 60, especially with symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or feeling faint, it could signal that your heart’s electrical system isn’t firing properly. The number alone isn’t enough to tell the difference. How you feel at that heart rate matters just as much.
What Affects Your Resting Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day and from week to week based on several factors. Caffeine and nicotine both raise it temporarily. So do stress, anxiety, and strong emotions, because your nervous system releases hormones that speed the heart up. Dehydration forces your heart to work harder since there’s less fluid volume to circulate, which pushes the rate up. Being sick with a fever has a similar effect. Even the temperature around you plays a role: heat and humidity increase heart rate as your body works to cool itself.
On the flip side, consistent aerobic exercise gradually lowers your resting heart rate over weeks and months. Improved sleep quality and stress management can bring it down too. If you’re tracking your heart rate over time, a gradual downward trend generally reflects improving cardiovascular fitness.
How to Check Your Heart Rate
You don’t need any equipment. Sit quietly for a few minutes first, then use the tips of your index and middle fingers (not your thumb, which has its own pulse) to find your pulse at one of two spots.
At your wrist: Turn your palm face up. Place your fingertips on the thumb side of your wrist, in the soft groove between the bone and the tendon. Press lightly until you feel each beat. Pressing too hard can actually block blood flow and make it harder to detect.
At your neck: Place your fingertips in the groove next to your windpipe on one side of your neck. Press gently. Never press on both sides of your neck at the same time, as this can make you dizzy or faint.
Once you feel a steady pulse, count the beats for a full 60 seconds. If you’re short on time, count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. The 60-second count is more accurate, especially if your heartbeat feels irregular.
Target Heart Rate During Exercise
Your maximum heart rate is roughly 220 minus your age. So for a 40-year-old, the estimated maximum is about 180 bpm. During moderate-intensity exercise (a brisk walk, easy cycling), you should aim for 50% to 70% of that maximum. During vigorous exercise (running, fast swimming), the target is 70% to 85%. For that same 40-year-old, moderate exercise would mean a heart rate of roughly 90 to 126 bpm, and vigorous exercise would be 126 to 153 bpm.
These numbers are estimates, not hard rules. They give you a useful framework for gauging how hard your body is actually working, regardless of how an exercise “feels.” A heart rate monitor or fitness tracker makes this easy to check in real time, but a quick manual pulse check during a rest break works too.
