That range applies whether you’re 25 or 75, though your individual number within it depends on your fitness level, stress, hydration, medications, and other everyday factors. Knowing where you fall, and what’s normal for different ages, helps you spot changes worth paying attention to.
Normal Resting Heart Rate for Adults
When you’re sitting calmly or lying down, your heart should beat somewhere between 60 and 100 times per minute. Most healthy adults land in the lower half of that range. A resting rate closer to 60 generally reflects a heart that pumps blood efficiently without working too hard.
Well-trained athletes often have resting heart rates in the 40s. This isn’t a sign of a problem. Regular vigorous exercise strengthens the heart muscle so it pushes out more blood with each beat, meaning it doesn’t need to beat as often. If you’re not an athlete and your resting heart rate sits below 60, it could still be perfectly normal for you, but it’s worth mentioning at your next checkup if it’s a new change or comes with symptoms like fatigue or dizziness.
Normal Heart Rates for Children
Children’s hearts beat faster than adults’, and the younger the child, the faster the rate. This is because smaller hearts hold less blood per beat and need to pump more frequently to keep up with the body’s demands. Here are the ranges by age when a child is awake:
- Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm
- 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm
- 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm
- Over 10 years: 60 to 100 bpm (same as adults)
During sleep, those numbers drop. A sleeping newborn might range from 80 to 160 bpm, while a sleeping child over 10 typically falls between 50 and 90 bpm. If you’re checking your child’s pulse and it seems high, make sure they’ve been sitting still for at least five minutes first. Activity, crying, or even excitement can push a child’s heart rate to the top of the range quickly.
What Affects Your Resting Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day and from one week to the next based on several factors. Caffeine, nicotine, and certain medications (especially decongestants and asthma inhalers) can temporarily raise it. So can stress, anxiety, heat, dehydration, and illness. Even standing up after lying down causes a brief spike.
Fitness level has the single biggest long-term influence. Vigorous exercise is the most effective way to lower your resting heart rate over time. As your cardiovascular system gets stronger, your heart becomes more efficient. People who go from sedentary to regularly active often see their resting rate drop by 10 or more bpm over several months. Body size, body position, and whether you’ve eaten recently also play smaller roles.
How to Measure Your Heart Rate Accurately
The simplest method is a manual pulse check. Place two fingers (not your thumb, which has its own pulse) on the inside of your wrist just below the base of your thumb, or on the side of your neck. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two. For the most accurate resting reading, do this first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, or after sitting quietly for at least five minutes.
Wearable devices like smartwatches and fitness bands are convenient but not as precise as medical-grade equipment. Wrist-based monitors tend to be very accurate when you’re resting or walking, and many also perform well during running or cycling. Chest-strap monitors are the most accurate consumer option because they detect electrical signals from the heart directly rather than reading your pulse through the skin. Smartphone apps that have you place a finger over the camera lens are more reliable than face-scanning apps, though neither matches dedicated monitors. These tools are useful for spotting trends over time, but they shouldn’t replace proper medical evaluation if something feels off.
Your Heart Rate During Exercise
During physical activity, your heart rate should climb well above its resting level. A common formula for estimating your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. So a 40-year-old would have an estimated max of about 180 bpm.
For moderate-intensity exercise (brisk walking, easy cycling), aim for 50% to 70% of your maximum. For that same 40-year-old, that’s roughly 90 to 126 bpm. Vigorous exercise (running, intense interval work) pushes you into the 70% to 85% range, or about 126 to 153 bpm. These are guidelines, not rigid rules. The formula gives an estimate, and individual variation is common. If you feel lightheaded, overly winded, or develop chest pain during exercise, those sensations matter more than any number on your watch.
When a Heart Rate Is Too High or Too Low
A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. It can be caused by fever, anemia, dehydration, anxiety, thyroid problems, or heart conditions. Occasionally hitting 100 during a stressful moment is normal. Staying above 100 at rest when you’re calm is not.
A resting rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. For athletes and physically active people, this is expected and healthy. For others, it can signal a problem with the heart’s electrical system, especially if it comes with symptoms.
The symptoms of an abnormal heart rhythm include a fluttering, pounding, or racing feeling in the chest, lightheadedness, dizziness, unusual fatigue, sweating, anxiety, and fainting or near-fainting. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or loss of consciousness are emergencies that need immediate medical attention. A heart rate that regularly falls outside the 60 to 100 range, or one that feels irregular even when the rate seems normal, is worth discussing with a doctor. An irregular rhythm is a separate issue from a fast or slow rate, and both matter.
