What Is a Normal Heart Rate in Beats Per Minute?

A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That’s your heart rate when you’re awake, calm, and sitting still. Most people who exercise regularly will land on the lower end of that range, while those who are less active tend to sit higher. Where you fall within that window depends on your fitness level, age, medications, and several other factors worth understanding.

What Counts as Resting Heart Rate

Your resting heart rate is specifically the number of times your heart beats each minute while you’re not exerting yourself. It’s different from the heart rate you’d see after climbing stairs or during a workout. To get an accurate reading, you should be sitting or lying down, relaxed, and not recently active. If you’ve just stood up, wait at least 15 to 20 seconds before checking, since movement briefly raises your pulse.

The average person’s resting heart rate sits between 70 and 75 bpm. People who do regular aerobic exercise often fall between 50 and 60 bpm, and professional endurance athletes can have resting rates in the upper 30s. A lower resting heart rate generally signals a more efficient heart: each beat pumps more blood, so fewer beats are needed per minute to circulate the same volume.

Normal Heart Rate by Age

Children have significantly faster heart rates than adults, and the younger the child, the faster the rate. A newborn’s median heart rate is around 127 bpm. That actually rises to about 145 bpm by one month of age before gradually declining to roughly 113 bpm by age two. Through childhood and adolescence, heart rate continues to slow as the heart grows larger and more efficient, eventually settling into the adult range of 60 to 100 bpm.

For older adults, the normal range stays the same on paper, but fitness and medication use play a bigger role. Heart rate doesn’t reliably increase or decrease with age alone in healthy people, though conditions more common later in life (and the medications used to treat them) can shift the numbers in either direction.

What Affects Your Heart Rate

Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It fluctuates throughout the day based on what your body is doing and what it’s responding to. Some of the most common influences include:

  • Physical activity: Heart rate rises with the intensity of whatever you’re doing. Even light housework will push it above your true resting rate.
  • Emotions and stress: Anxiety, excitement, sadness, and stress all increase your pulse, sometimes noticeably.
  • Temperature: Hot weather or a fever raises heart rate because your cardiovascular system works harder to cool you down.
  • Body size: People with obesity tend to have a higher resting heart rate than those without.
  • Pain: Even mild pain can elevate your pulse.
  • Caffeine and stimulants: Coffee, energy drinks, and certain medications can temporarily speed things up.
  • Medications: Some common heart and blood pressure medications are specifically designed to slow heart rate. Beta blockers, for example, typically reduce resting heart rate by 5 to 20 bpm depending on the dose.

Because so many variables are at play, checking your pulse at the same time each day, in the same position, gives you the most consistent picture of your baseline.

How to Check Your Pulse

The simplest method uses your wrist. Turn one hand palm-up and place the middle three fingers of your other hand on the inside of your wrist, just below where the thumb connects. Press firmly until you feel a steady pulsing sensation. Count the beats for a full 60 seconds, or count for 30 seconds and multiply by two.

Smartwatches and fitness trackers do this automatically using optical sensors, and they’re reasonably accurate for resting measurements. But if you’re ever concerned about an unusual reading, a manual check is a good way to confirm what your device is showing.

Bradycardia and Tachycardia

Clinically, a resting heart rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia, and a rate above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. But these thresholds don’t automatically mean something is wrong. A fit person sitting at 52 bpm is perfectly healthy. There’s actually a growing clinical consensus to lower the bradycardia threshold to below 50 bpm, since many healthy people naturally rest in the 50s.

Tachycardia at rest is more likely to signal a problem, especially if it’s persistent. Temporary spikes from caffeine, anxiety, or dehydration are common and usually harmless. But a resting rate that regularly exceeds 100 bpm without an obvious cause is worth investigating, since it can point to thyroid issues, anemia, infections, or heart rhythm disorders.

Certain heart rhythm disturbances are serious. If a rapid or irregular heartbeat is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, that’s a medical emergency. A sudden collapse with no detectable pulse can indicate ventricular fibrillation, which requires immediate help.

Heart Rate During Exercise

During physical activity, your heart rate is supposed to climb well above your resting rate. How high depends on the intensity of what you’re doing and your age. Your estimated maximum heart rate provides the ceiling. The most widely used formula is 220 minus your age, though research has shown a more accurate equation: 208 minus 0.7 times your age. For a 40-year-old, that puts the estimated max at about 180 bpm rather than the 180 from the older formula (in this case they happen to be close, but the formulas diverge more for older adults, where the traditional formula tends to underestimate the true max).

Exercise intensity guidelines use percentages of that maximum. Moderate exercise, like brisk walking or casual cycling, targets 50% to 70% of your max. Vigorous exercise, like running or high-intensity interval training, targets 70% to 85%. For that same 40-year-old with an estimated max of 180 bpm, moderate intensity would mean keeping your heart rate between roughly 90 and 126 bpm, and vigorous intensity between 126 and 153 bpm.

These zones are estimates, not hard rules. Fitness level, medications, and individual variation all affect where you actually feel challenged. Perceived effort is a useful backup: if you can talk but not sing, you’re likely in the moderate zone.

What Your Resting Heart Rate Tells You

Tracking your resting heart rate over time gives you a surprisingly useful window into your overall fitness and health. As cardiovascular fitness improves, resting heart rate tends to drop. A gradual decrease over weeks or months of consistent exercise is a reliable sign that your heart is getting stronger.

On the flip side, a resting heart rate that creeps upward without explanation can signal overtraining, poor sleep, dehydration, illness coming on, or increased stress. Many athletes use morning heart rate as a quick daily check: a reading several beats above their usual baseline is a cue to take it easy that day.

A single reading that seems off isn’t cause for concern. Bodies are variable, and heart rate responds to dozens of inputs at once. Patterns matter more than any one number. If your resting heart rate is consistently outside the 60 to 100 range and you’re not an athlete or taking medications that explain it, that’s useful information to bring to a doctor.
