The average resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). Most healthy adults sit somewhere in the middle of that range, though your personal normal depends on your fitness level, age, and what your body is doing at any given moment. Highly trained athletes can have resting rates as low as 40 bpm, which is perfectly healthy for them.
Normal Resting Heart Rate for Adults
Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats each minute while you’re awake, calm, and not moving. For adults over age 10, the normal range is 60 to 100 bpm. A rate consistently at the lower end of that range generally signals better cardiovascular fitness, because a stronger heart pumps more blood with each beat and doesn’t need to work as hard.
Below 60 bpm is clinically called bradycardia, and above 100 bpm at rest is called tachycardia. Neither is automatically dangerous. Bradycardia in a fit person is normal. Tachycardia can be triggered by something as simple as anxiety or a cup of coffee. These thresholds matter most when they come with symptoms like dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
Heart Rate by Age in Children
Children’s hearts beat significantly faster than adults’, and the younger the child, the higher the rate. Here’s what’s considered normal while awake:
- Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm
- 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm
- 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm
- Over 10 years: 60 to 100 bpm (same as adults)
During sleep, children’s rates drop noticeably. A sleeping newborn might range from 80 to 160 bpm, while a sleeping child over 10 typically falls between 50 and 90 bpm. These wide ranges exist because a child’s heart rate is more reactive to movement, crying, fever, and excitement than an adult’s.
Why Athletes Have Lower Heart Rates
Endurance training physically changes the heart. Over months and years, regular aerobic exercise causes the heart’s left ventricle to grow larger and stronger, allowing it to push out more blood per beat. When each beat delivers more oxygen to the body, the heart simply doesn’t need to beat as often. That’s why very fit athletes can function well with a resting heart rate near 40 bpm.
If you start a regular exercise routine, you can expect your resting heart rate to gradually decrease over weeks to months. A drop of even 5 to 10 bpm reflects a real improvement in cardiovascular efficiency.
What Happens to Your Heart Rate During Sleep
Your heart rate doesn’t stay flat overnight. It shifts with each sleep stage. During deep sleep, your heart rate slows to about 20% to 30% below your resting rate. So if your normal resting rate is 70 bpm, deep sleep might bring it down to roughly 49 to 56 bpm.
During REM sleep, the stage where most dreaming happens, your heart rate becomes more variable. It reflects whatever your brain is experiencing in the dream. A stressful or active dream can push your heart rate up to near-waking levels, while a calm dream keeps it low. This variability throughout the night is completely normal.
Factors That Raise or Lower Your Heart Rate
Plenty of everyday things shift your heart rate up or down, even when you’re not exercising. Emotional stress and anxiety activate your body’s fight-or-flight response, releasing hormones that speed the heart up. Heat does the same: when your body temperature rises, your heart works harder to move blood toward the skin for cooling.
Caffeine has a modest effect. Research shows it raises heart rate by roughly 5 to 7 bpm on average, though the impact varies from person to person depending on tolerance. Dehydration, illness, certain medications, and even body position (standing versus lying down) all play a role. If you’re checking your resting heart rate, take it first thing in the morning before getting out of bed for the most consistent reading.
How to Check Your Heart Rate
You can measure your pulse at two easy locations. The first is your wrist (the radial artery): place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your opposite wrist, just below the base of your thumb. The second is your neck (the carotid artery): place the same two fingers alongside your windpipe, just below the jawline. Press gently until you feel a steady pulse.
For the most accurate count, time yourself for a full 60 seconds. A common shortcut is counting for 15 seconds and multiplying by four, but this introduces more room for error, especially if your rhythm is irregular. Wearable fitness trackers and smartwatches use optical sensors to estimate heart rate continuously, which is convenient for spotting trends over time, though they can be less precise during movement.
Maximum Heart Rate and Exercise Zones
Your maximum heart rate is the fastest your heart can beat during all-out exertion. The most common formula to estimate it is simple: 220 minus your age. A 40-year-old, for example, would have an estimated max of 180 bpm. A slightly more accurate formula, developed by researcher Hirofumi Tanaka, calculates it as 208 minus 0.7 times your age, which gives the same 40-year-old a max of 180 bpm but diverges more at younger and older ages.
Neither formula is perfect. Research on marathon runners found that the standard 220-minus-age formula underestimates max heart rate in men by about 3 bpm and overestimates it in women by about 5 bpm. These are estimates, not guarantees, so treat them as starting points.
Once you have your estimated maximum, you can calculate exercise intensity zones. The American Heart Association defines moderate-intensity exercise as 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate, and vigorous exercise as 70% to 85%. For that 40-year-old with a max of 180 bpm, moderate exercise means keeping the heart rate between 90 and 126 bpm, while vigorous exercise falls between 126 and 153 bpm.
When Your Heart Rate Signals a Problem
A resting heart rate that’s consistently above 100 bpm without an obvious trigger (like caffeine, stress, or recent exercise) is worth paying attention to. The same goes for a rate that drops below 60 bpm in someone who isn’t physically fit, especially if it comes with fatigue or lightheadedness. Symptoms at rest generally become more concerning when heart rates exceed 150 bpm, though people with existing heart conditions may feel effects at lower rates.
Irregular rhythm matters too. If your pulse feels like it’s skipping beats, adding extra beats, or fluttering rather than beating steadily, that pattern is worth noting and bringing up with a healthcare provider. A single episode after too much coffee is different from a recurring pattern, and tracking your heart rate over days or weeks gives useful context.
