What Is a Normal PD for Glasses? Average Ranges Explained

A normal pupillary distance (PD) for adults falls between about 54 and 74 millimeters, with the average landing around 62 mm for women and 64 mm for men. Children typically range from 41 to 55 mm. This number tells your optician exactly where to center each lens so you’re looking through the clearest point, and even a small error can cause problems.

What PD Actually Measures

Your PD is the distance in millimeters from the center of one pupil to the center of the other. It determines where the optical center of each lens sits in your frames. When the centers line up with your pupils, light bends through the lens exactly as your prescription intends. When they don’t, the lens essentially pushes light slightly off-target, forcing your eyes to compensate.

Most people’s PD stays stable once they reach adulthood. It can shift slightly depending on whether you’re focusing on something far away or up close, since your eyes naturally turn inward for near tasks. That’s why some prescriptions list both a “distance PD” and a “near PD,” with the near number typically 3 to 4 mm smaller.

Binocular PD vs. Monocular PD

You’ll see PD written two ways. A binocular (or single) PD is one number, like 63 mm, representing the full distance between your pupils. A monocular (or dual) PD is two numbers, like 31 mm and 32 mm, measuring how far each pupil sits from the bridge of your nose. Monocular PD is more precise because most faces aren’t perfectly symmetrical. Your left eye may sit slightly closer to your nose than your right, or vice versa.

For standard single-vision glasses with a mild prescription, a binocular PD works fine. Monocular measurements become more important in a few specific situations:

  • High prescriptions. The stronger the lens, the more a small centering error magnifies into noticeable distortion.
  • Progressive or bifocal lenses. These lenses have distinct zones for distance and reading, and each zone needs to align precisely with each eye.
  • Misaligned eyes. Conditions like strabismus or amblyopia mean your pupils may not be evenly spaced relative to your nose.

How PD Is Measured

There are two main methods. The traditional approach uses a simple millimeter ruler held across the bridge of your nose while you focus on a distant point. Your eye care provider lines up the ruler’s zero mark with the center of one pupil and reads the measurement at the center of the other. It’s quick and works well for most prescriptions.

The second method uses a digital pupillometer, a small device you look into that calculates the distance between your corneal reflections automatically. Textbooks generally recommend this approach for stronger prescriptions because it reduces the small human errors that come with a handheld ruler. In practice, both methods are accurate enough for the vast majority of glasses wearers.

If you’re ordering glasses online, you may need to measure your own PD. The easiest way is to stand about 14 inches from a mirror, hold a millimeter ruler flat against your brow, close your right eye, align the zero with the center of your left pupil, then open your right eye and close your left to read where your right pupil falls. Doing this a few times and averaging the results improves accuracy.

How Much Error Actually Matters

Optical industry standards allow a tolerance of up to 2.5 mm from the specified PD for single-vision and multifocal lenses with prescriptions stronger than about 2.75 diopters. For progressive lenses, the tolerance tightens to just 1.0 mm per eye. These aren’t generous margins. They reflect how sensitive lens performance is to centering, especially as prescription strength increases.

When your PD is off by even a couple of millimeters in a strong prescription, the lens creates an unintended prismatic effect. Your eyes have to work harder to merge the images from both lenses into one clear picture. The result is eye strain, fatigue, headaches, and blurry vision. Some people describe it as a vague sense that something just isn’t right with their glasses, without being able to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong.

For lower prescriptions, a small PD error is far less noticeable. A binocular measurement that’s off by a millimeter or two in a mild prescription rarely causes symptoms. But if your prescription is above 4 or 5 diopters, or you’re wearing progressives, getting the PD right is one of the most important factors in whether your new glasses feel comfortable.

Where to Find Your PD

Your PD isn’t always printed on your prescription, which catches many people off guard when ordering online. Some states don’t require eye doctors to include it. If it’s not listed, you can call your eye care provider’s office and ask for it. They measured it during your exam or fitting and should have it on file. If you’d rather not wait, most online retailers walk you through a self-measurement process, and some offer apps that calculate it from a photo of your face taken at a set distance.

One thing worth knowing: your PD from a previous exam is almost certainly still accurate if you’re an adult. Unlike your prescription, which can shift over time, the distance between your pupils doesn’t change once your skull has finished growing. So if you measured it five years ago, that number still works.
