A normal resting pulse for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That range applies when you’re awake, calm, and not moving around. Children and infants have faster resting rates, and well-trained athletes often fall below the standard adult floor of 60 bpm without any cause for concern.
Normal Ranges by Age
Heart rate slows steadily as children grow. An infant’s heart can beat nearly three times as fast as a teenager’s, which is completely normal for their stage of development.
- 4 weeks to 1 year: 100 to 180 bpm
- 1 to 3 years: 98 to 140 bpm
- 3 to 5 years: 80 to 120 bpm
- 5 to 12 years: 75 to 118 bpm
- 13 to 17 years: 60 to 100 bpm
- Adults (18+): 60 to 100 bpm
These numbers apply during waking rest. Pulse rates drop during sleep and rise with any physical activity, emotional stress, or stimulants like caffeine.
Why Athletes Often Have Lower Rates
Endurance athletes frequently have resting heart rates in the 40s or 50s. That doesn’t signal a problem. Years of cardiovascular training enlarge the heart and strengthen its contractions, so each beat pumps more blood. The heart simply doesn’t need to beat as often to deliver the same amount of oxygen.
This adaptation also involves the nervous system. The branch responsible for “rest and digest” functions becomes more active, keeping the heart in a slower, more efficient rhythm at rest. If you exercise regularly and your resting pulse sits below 60 with no symptoms like dizziness or fatigue, it’s likely a sign of fitness rather than illness.
How to Check Your Pulse Accurately
Sit down and rest quietly for a few minutes before measuring. Turn one hand palm-up and find the spot between the wrist bone and the tendon on the thumb side. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers there and press lightly until you feel each beat. Pressing too hard can block blood flow and make the pulse harder to detect.
Count the beats for a full 60 seconds using a clock or timer. A common shortcut is counting for 15 seconds and multiplying by four, but the full minute gives you a more accurate number, especially if your rhythm feels uneven. The count you get is your pulse rate in bpm.
For the most consistent reading, check your pulse first thing in the morning before getting out of bed or drinking coffee. That gives you a true resting baseline you can track over time.
What Pushes Your Pulse Outside the Normal Range
Plenty of everyday factors temporarily shift your heart rate. Caffeine, nicotine, dehydration, stress, poor sleep, and certain medications (decongestants, asthma inhalers, thyroid drugs) can all push your resting pulse higher. A hot environment does the same because your heart works harder to cool your body. Most of these fluctuations are short-lived and settle once the trigger passes.
Illness and fever reliably raise resting heart rate. As a rough rule, each degree Fahrenheit of fever can add about 10 bpm. Anxiety and panic episodes can spike the pulse well above 100 even while sitting still, which often prompts people to worry about a heart problem when the cause is purely stress-related.
Tachycardia and Bradycardia
Clinically, a resting heart rate above 100 bpm is called tachycardia, and one below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. Neither label automatically means something is wrong. Context matters. A pulse of 55 in a runner is healthy. A pulse of 110 after climbing stairs is expected. These terms become medically relevant when the rate is persistently abnormal at rest or accompanied by symptoms.
Symptoms worth paying attention to include a fluttering or pounding sensation in the chest, lightheadedness, unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, or fainting. A heart that occasionally skips a beat is common and usually harmless, but a pattern of skipped beats alongside dizziness or chest discomfort deserves evaluation. Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, or fainting require emergency care.
Your Maximum Heart Rate During Exercise
The standard formula for estimating your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. A 40-year-old, for example, has an estimated maximum of 180 bpm. This isn’t a target to hit. It’s a ceiling used to calculate training zones. Moderate exercise typically falls between 50% and 70% of your maximum, while vigorous exercise pushes into the 70% to 85% range.
The formula is a rough average and can be off by 10 to 15 bpm in either direction for a given person. If you’re starting a new exercise routine, it’s a useful starting point, but how you feel during effort (your ability to hold a conversation, for instance) is just as reliable a guide as a number on a wrist monitor.
Heart Rate Variability
If you wear a fitness tracker, you may see a metric called heart rate variability, or HRV. This measures the tiny variation in time between consecutive heartbeats, down to the millisecond. A higher HRV generally signals that your body is well-recovered and handling stress effectively. A lower HRV can indicate fatigue, illness, or accumulated training load.
Typical HRV values vary widely by age. Someone in their 20s might see resting HRV between 55 and 105 milliseconds, while someone in their 60s might range from 25 to 45 milliseconds. Because individual baselines differ so much, the most useful approach is tracking your own trend over weeks rather than comparing your number to someone else’s.
