This difference is consistent across age groups and comes down to basic anatomy: the female heart is roughly one-quarter smaller than the male heart and pumps less blood per beat, so it compensates by beating more frequently.

Why Women Have a Faster Pulse Than Men

By adulthood, a male heart weighs about 25% more than a female heart. That size difference translates directly into how much blood the heart can push out with each contraction. A woman’s heart ejects roughly 69 ml of blood per beat, compared to about 90 ml for a man’s. To deliver the same volume of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, a smaller heart simply has to beat more often. By adolescence, the heart rate settles into the adult range of 60 to 100 bpm and stays there for the rest of your life.

What does change with age is where you land within that range. Younger, active women often sit in the 60s or low 70s, while older or less active women may trend closer to the 80s or 90s. Neither end of the spectrum is inherently concerning as long as you’re within 60 to 100 at rest and feeling well.

How Fitness Affects Your Resting Rate

If you exercise regularly, your resting heart rate will likely fall toward the lower end of the normal range, or even below it. Female athletes commonly have resting rates between 40 and 50 bpm. This happens because aerobic training strengthens the heart muscle, allowing it to pump more blood per beat. A stronger heart doesn’t need to beat as often to get the job done.

If you track your heart rate with a wearable device, you may notice this pattern clearly. It’s normal and temporary.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy causes one of the most dramatic heart rate shifts a woman can experience. The increase begins early in the first trimester and climbs steadily, peaking in the third trimester. By the end of pregnancy, resting heart rate typically rises by 10 to 20 bpm, representing a 20% to 25% increase over your pre-pregnancy baseline. In one large study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the median resting heart rate went from about 65.5 bpm before pregnancy to 77 bpm in the third trimester. This increase supports the extra blood volume your body produces to nourish the fetus.

Menopause

The decline in estrogen during menopause affects the cardiovascular system in several ways. Estrogen helps maintain vagal tone, the calming influence your nervous system exerts on your heart. As estrogen drops, some women notice a slightly elevated resting heart rate or more frequent palpitations. Estrogen replacement therapy has been shown to lower resting heart rate during waking hours and sleep, likely by restoring some of that vagal tone. Cardiovascular risk also rises after menopause, which is one reason keeping tabs on your resting pulse becomes more useful during this stage of life.

Other Factors That Raise or Lower Your Pulse

Beyond fitness and hormones, several everyday factors influence where your resting heart rate lands on any given day:

  • Stress and anxiety activate your fight-or-flight response, pushing your heart rate up temporarily.
  • Caffeine can raise your pulse for a few hours after consumption.
  • Dehydration reduces blood volume, forcing your heart to beat faster to maintain circulation.

How to Measure Your Pulse Accurately

Place two fingers (index and middle) on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two. Alternatively, you can count for a full 60 seconds for greater accuracy.

Wrist-based fitness trackers and smartwatches do this continuously and can be helpful for spotting trends over time, though they’re slightly less accurate than a manual check on any single reading. Taking your pulse after exercise, coffee, or a stressful event will give you a misleadingly high number.

Signs Your Heart Rate May Be Too High

A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is classified as tachycardia. On its own, a pulse that occasionally touches 100 isn’t necessarily dangerous, especially if it happens during stress or illness. But a persistently elevated rate, or one that spikes without an obvious trigger, deserves attention. Symptoms that can accompany an abnormally fast heart rate include palpitations (a racing or pounding sensation in the chest), shortness of breath, lightheadedness, dizziness, and fainting. Chest pain or near-fainting alongside a rapid pulse warrants immediate medical evaluation.

On the other end, a resting heart rate below 60 bpm in someone who isn’t physically active, particularly if accompanied by fatigue, confusion, or fainting, can signal that the heart’s electrical system isn’t firing properly.
