The 60 to 100 bpm range is the standard clinical benchmark, but the boundaries are less rigid than they appear. A heart rate below 60 bpm is technically called bradycardia, yet population studies often use 50 bpm as a more practical cutoff for concern. Many healthy people sit in the 50s without any problems. On the other end, a resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia and generally warrants attention.

Well-trained endurance athletes routinely have resting heart rates in the 40s or even high 30s. In one study of 465 endurance athletes, 38% had a minimum heart rate at or below 40 bpm on a 24-hour monitor. That’s not a sign of a problem. It’s a sign of an efficient heart.
The mechanism behind this involves two things. First, consistent aerobic training strengthens the heart muscle so it can pump more blood per beat, meaning it doesn’t need to beat as often. Second, training increases the activity of the vagus nerve, which acts as a brake on heart rate. There’s also a genetic component: some people are wired with naturally slower sinus nodes, the heart’s built-in pacemaker, and that predisposition gets amplified by fitness.
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to see this effect. Regular moderate exercise over several months can lower your resting heart rate by a noticeable margin.
Factors That Shift Your Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It responds to a long list of temporary and ongoing influences:
- Caffeine and stimulants speed up your heart rate for hours after consumption.
- Stress and anxiety trigger your fight-or-flight response, which raises heart rate even when you’re sitting still.
- Heat and humidity force your heart to work harder to cool your body, adding several beats per minute on hot days.

When a high resting heart rate combined with other cardiovascular risk factors, the numbers became more dramatic: cardiovascular mortality risk jumped more than sevenfold.
This doesn’t mean a heart rate of 85 is dangerous. It means that, across large populations, a lower resting heart rate correlates with better cardiovascular fitness and longer life. Tracking your own number over time gives you a useful signal. If your resting heart rate creeps upward over weeks or months without an obvious explanation like a new medication or increased stress, it’s worth paying attention to.
How to Measure Accurately
The best time to check your resting heart rate is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed or drink coffee. Sit or lie still for a few minutes, then place two fingers on the inside of your wrist just below the base of your thumb. Count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply by two. Alternatively, count for a full 60 seconds for a more precise reading.
Measure on several different mornings to get a reliable baseline. A single reading can be thrown off by a poor night’s sleep, a stressful dream, or even needing to use the bathroom.
How Accurate Are Wearable Devices
If you use a fitness tracker or smartwatch, the resting heart rate it reports is likely close to accurate, though not all devices perform equally. A study published in Physiological Reports compared several popular wearables against an ECG-grade chest strap over 536 nights of sleep tracking. The Oura Ring (both Gen 3 and Gen 4) showed essentially no bias in resting heart rate readings. The WHOOP 4.0 slightly underreported, and the Polar watch showed more variance, though all differences were small in practical terms.
A performance scientist involved in evaluating these devices considers a wearable “good enough” for guiding health and training decisions if it lands within about 5% of an ECG reading for resting heart rate. By that standard, most current-generation optical sensors on your wrist or finger are reliable for tracking trends over time, even if any single reading is off by a beat or two. The trend line matters more than the snapshot.
