A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That range comes from both the American Heart Association and Mayo Clinic, and it has remained the standard for years. But where you land within that window depends on your age, sex, fitness level, and even the time of day you check.
The Standard Adult Range
The 60 to 100 bpm range is the clinical benchmark, but most people cluster well below the upper end. CDC data from a large national survey found the average resting heart rate for adult men is about 71 bpm and for adult women is about 74 bpm. So if yours sits in the 60s or 70s, you’re squarely in the middle of the pack.
A reading below 60 bpm is technically called bradycardia, and one above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. Neither is automatically a problem. About 15% of adult men and 7% of adult women have a resting heart rate below 60, and most of them are perfectly healthy. Very fit people routinely sit in the 40 to 50 bpm range because their hearts pump more blood per beat, so fewer beats are needed. On the other end, a rate consistently above 100 at rest is less common (around 1 to 2% of adults) and more likely to warrant a closer look.
How Age Affects Resting Heart Rate
Children have significantly faster heart rates than adults. A newborn’s heart can beat 85 to 205 times per minute while awake, because a smaller heart needs to pump more frequently to circulate blood. As children grow, the rate drops steadily:
- Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm awake, 80 to 160 bpm asleep
- 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm awake, 75 to 160 bpm asleep
- 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm awake, 60 to 90 bpm asleep
- Over 10 years: 60 to 100 bpm awake, 50 to 90 bpm asleep
By the time a child is a teenager, their resting heart rate aligns closely with the adult range.
Differences Between Men and Women
Women tend to have a slightly faster resting heart rate than men, by about 3 bpm on average. That gap is consistent across most of adulthood but narrows after age 80, when the difference is no longer statistically meaningful.
The two sexes also reach their adult heart rate at different points. In males, the childhood decline in heart rate levels off around age 16. In females, the decline is more gradual and doesn’t plateau until around age 40. This means a 25-year-old woman may still be experiencing a slow, natural decrease in her resting rate, while a man the same age likely settled into his baseline years earlier.
These differences also show up in clinical patterns. Men are roughly two and a half times more likely than women to have a resting heart rate below 60, while women are somewhat more likely to have a rate above 100. Both patterns reflect normal biological variation in most cases.
What Pushes Your Heart Rate Up or Down
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts in response to a long list of everyday factors. Caffeine can raise it temporarily, especially in higher doses. Stress triggers adrenaline release, which speeds up your heart and raises blood pressure. Poor sleep, illness, and dehydration can all nudge the number higher.
On the other side, regular aerobic exercise is the most reliable way to lower your resting heart rate over time. As your cardiovascular system gets more efficient, your heart muscle strengthens and pushes more blood with each contraction, so it doesn’t need to beat as often. Endurance athletes often have resting rates in the 40s, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Some blood pressure and anxiety medications also slow the heart by blocking the effects of adrenaline.
Your heart rate naturally fluctuates throughout the day, too. It tends to be lowest at night during sleep and rises after you wake, eat, or move around. This is why consistency matters when you’re tracking trends over time.
How to Measure Your Resting Heart Rate
To get an accurate reading, sit or lie down comfortably for at least five minutes before you check. You want your body truly at rest, not recovering from walking across the house or climbing stairs.
Place the pads of your index and middle fingers gently against the side of your neck, just under the jawline, or on the inside of your wrist below the base of your thumb. Count the beats for 30 seconds, then multiply by two. If your rhythm feels irregular, count for a full 60 seconds for better accuracy.
The best time to check is first thing in the morning, before caffeine or activity, if you want a consistent baseline. Wearable devices can also track your rate continuously, which is useful for spotting trends, though individual readings can be off by a few beats compared to a manual pulse check.
When a Heart Rate Outside the Range Matters
A single reading outside 60 to 100 bpm usually isn’t meaningful on its own. A cup of coffee, a stressful phone call, or a hot room can temporarily push you above 100. And as noted, many healthy people, especially those who exercise regularly, sit comfortably below 60 with no symptoms at all.
What matters more is the pattern over time and whether you’re experiencing symptoms. A resting heart rate that’s consistently elevated, or one that’s trending upward over weeks, can signal stress, deconditioning, dehydration, thyroid issues, or other changes worth investigating. On the low end, bradycardia becomes a concern if it comes with dizziness, fatigue, fainting, or shortness of breath, which can mean the heart isn’t pumping enough blood to meet your body’s needs.
A resting rate that’s been stable in the 50s for years in someone who exercises is a completely different situation from a sudden drop into the 40s in someone who doesn’t. Context is everything.
