A process image is the complete collection of data an operating system needs to run a program. It includes the program’s code, its variables, a control block tracking its current state, and the stack used for function calls. Think of it as the full “snapshot” of everything a program requires while it’s alive in memory.
Understanding the process image helps clarify a fundamental distinction in computing: the difference between a program sitting on your hard drive and a program actually running. A program file is static, just instructions stored in a file. A process image is what the operating system builds in memory when it brings that program to life.
From Program File to Process Image
When you double-click an application or run a command, the operating system doesn’t simply copy the file into memory and start executing. It prepares a structured data layout that accommodates the code, the required memory, environment variables, and everything else the program needs to run. The executable code is only the most obvious part.
The operating system also sets up a pointer so it can locate the process in memory, a pointer to the last instruction that was executed, a block of pre-allocated memory for temporary storage, and a table pointing to additional memory the program can request later. So while there can’t be a process without an executable file, the process image is a much richer structure than the file itself. It’s the difference between a blueprint and a building under construction.
The Four Parts of a Process Image
A process image is typically described as having four segments:
- Code (text segment): The actual machine instructions the CPU executes. This segment is usually read-only, since the program’s instructions don’t change while it runs.
- Data segment: Global and static variables the program declares. Some of these have values assigned before the program starts; others are initialized to zero and filled in during execution.
- Stack: A block of memory used for temporary storage like local variables, function parameters, and return addresses. Every time your program calls a function, a new “frame” gets pushed onto the stack. When that function finishes, its frame is removed. The stack grows downward from higher memory addresses toward lower ones.
- Process Control Block (PCB): A data structure maintained by the operating system (not by your program) that stores everything the OS needs to manage the process. This includes the process state, the contents of CPU registers, memory management information like page tables and memory limits, and scheduling details.
In addition to the stack, most processes also use a heap, a region of memory for dynamic allocations that your program requests at runtime. The heap sits at lower addresses and grows upward, in the opposite direction of the stack. This opposing growth pattern lets both regions expand without immediately colliding.
What the Process Control Block Tracks
The PCB deserves a closer look because it’s the operating system’s primary handle on your process. It stores the process state (running, waiting, ready), the values of all CPU registers, the program counter pointing to the next instruction, and memory management information such as the page table that maps virtual addresses to physical locations in RAM.
The PCB becomes especially important during a context switch. When the operating system pauses one process to let another run, it copies all the current CPU register values into the paused process’s PCB, then loads the register values from the new process’s PCB into the hardware. From each program’s perspective, nothing changed. It picks up exactly where it left off, with no awareness that the CPU was doing something else in between. This save-and-restore cycle is what allows dozens or hundreds of processes to share a single processor and still behave as if each one has the CPU to itself.
Virtual Memory and the Process Image
A process image doesn’t occupy one contiguous block of physical RAM. Instead, each process gets its own virtual address space, a private map of memory addresses that the operating system translates to actual physical locations behind the scenes. This translation happens through paging: both virtual and physical memory are divided into fixed-size blocks (commonly 4 KB), with virtual blocks called pages and physical blocks called frames. The page table in the PCB records which virtual page maps to which physical frame.
This setup has a practical consequence. Not every part of a process image needs to be in physical RAM at all times. When a process is blocked or suspended, the operating system can swap portions of it out to disk. Rather than moving an entire process image back and forth, modern systems swap individual pages as needed, keeping frequently used pages in RAM and pushing idle ones to a backing store. This is why your computer can run more programs than would physically fit in memory at once.
How ASLR Rearranges the Image
One security technique directly modifies where a process image lands in memory. Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) shuffles the locations of the main program, its libraries, the stack, the heap, and memory-mapped files each time a process starts. This randomization means an attacker can’t predict where specific code or data will be, making it much harder to exploit vulnerabilities that depend on knowing exact memory addresses.
ASLR relocates entire executable images as a unit. It picks a random offset and applies it to all addresses within the image. If two functions were originally 256 bytes apart, they stay 256 bytes apart after relocation. The internal structure of the process image stays intact; only its starting position in the address space changes.
Process Image vs. Multi-Threaded Process Image
A standard process image supports a single thread of execution: one instruction pointer, one stack, one flow of control. A multi-threaded process image shares the same code and data segments across all its threads, but each thread gets its own stack and its own set of saved register values. The PCB expands to track multiple threads, each with independent state information. This is why threads within the same process can share global variables easily (they see the same data segment) but maintain separate local variables (each thread has its own stack).
